Nellie's Place Cafe

After a breakfast and a lunch, I will try a dinner later and revise this review. This very friendly homey cafe serves ordinary dishes from a simple menu. The servings are of adequate size and plainly presented without garnish, flair and florish. The daily special chicken & rice soup was very salty but with lots of flavors. The three egg omelette was bright fluffy and high but the tomato filling was big globs. The dining area and toilets are clean. The music tended to be loud, rap and vulgar. As a native Southerner, I don't believe I've found a restaurant more like the places back home (Texas/Memphis/New Orleans) that could compare better than Nellie's. Breakfast served 'til around 4:00pm every day. Items on the menu include oxtails, spare ribs, real Texas-style BBQ beef ribs, catfish and your usual delcious home-style soul food side dishes. Dr. Pepper is served in the bottle (the ONLY way to drink it) and they have a very special dessert by request called ""Possum Pie"". The owner, J. J. Jackson always has a friendly word or an interesting story and makes you feel like part of the family the moment you walk through the door. If you expect high-brow Southern cuisine, fast service, an accurate order and are short on time, Nellie's is not for you. A relaxed attitude and an appreciation for the simple things is key.
