Brunch Good for Me, but not my Buddy 10/3/2010

I showed up Sunday morning around 11:30am and waited to be seated outside for only a few minutes. I asked the waitress if she would recommend the vegetarian reuben. She barely said a word about it other than it was a sandwich (brilliant). So I ordered the tofu scramble. My dish was delicious; spinach, tofu and peppers with a little spice. No tabasco needed. It was one of the better tofu scrambles I have had and it was a healthy serving for $9. My friend ordered a BLT and was shocked it didn't come with turkey. In addition to that, it was not the type of sandwich that was worth $10+ She requested turkey and they brought her a side with a ton of turkey on a plate and tried charging her $4.50 for it. She got it docked down to $2.50. She felt the waitress was inadequate . . . she was purely functional. An empty vessel with no soul. There was a gentleman that checked on us, gave her dog water, went out of his way to make sure we were happy. I wish he got our tip. I also liked everyone that sat next to us, so its a neat little spot. more

Bad, bad service, awesome food. 6/25/2008

The food is as delicious as the service is horrible. Every single time I've gone I've sat at a table for at least 10 minutes before a server even came by the table (even if there are less than 5 tables sat!). Once the order is taken don't expect to see the server again until your food comes. Once they bring the food ask for anything you'll need cuz you won't see them till they drop the check. The bussers are awesome! They help you with everything else if you give them puppy dog eyes. =) I'd still go just because the food's that good. I just wish I could tip the bussers instead of the servers. They seem to do alot of nothing. Pros: Price, Food, Coffee Cons: Service, Parking on the Weekends, Ambience, Line on Weekends more

come hungry, leave slowly 5/6/2008

omigod i'm full.\r \r Happy mess, devil's mess, rosemary potatoes, coffee, bacon. And waffles, too.\r This is breakfast, and really done right.\r Our server was very nice, although a little overwhelmed, but it didn't seem to affect things too much.\r Food is delicious, and ample. You actually get what you pay for.\r Millie's has a neighborhood feel, and you find yourself in conversations with those around you as you pass the tapatio and syrup back and forth; this is a good thing, unless you're the hollywood type that avoids talking to lesser beings.\r \r Perfect on any sunday, or any day you want to feel like sunday. Pros: amount of food, casual, friendly, endless coffe, delicious delicious. Cons: might have to wait for a table. do it. more

Great Breakfast/Lunch Spot in Silver Lake 3/16/2008

Millie's is a fantastic choice for breakfast or lunch in Silver Lake. Try the Eleanor R. special for breakfast -- the rosemary potatoes with eggs, cheese, guacamole, salsa and sour cream will get you coming back for more. Another highlight are the banana walnut pancakes -- yummy! I've also had the BLT for lunch, which was fantastic. \r \r On top of the food, it's a great spot to enjoy the sunshine at one of the sidewalk tables. Also great for Silver Lake people watching. One tip -- like all breakfast spots in Silver Lake (and probably everywhere else on the planet) get there early or late unless you want to wait for a table. more

The only place to have breakfast in Silver Feliz 7/10/2007

For years I enjoyed the food at Millie's sister location in Richmond, VA. So, when able to visit Los Angeles I had a destination in mind. Neeedless to say I was not disapppointed, but I will say it anyways, I was not disappointed! Everytime I make the trip to see the women I love (i am from Utah) I grab my fiance by the hand and we go visit my second love MILLIES. Try the turkey tacos and bring an appetite. Pros: The menu Cons: I live in Utah more

Great hole in a wall place 4/4/2007

Ever since my boyfriend took me to this dive, I've been craving their food whenever the lazy weekend rolls around. Maybe its all that time sitting at the counter where you watch those cooks working up a sweat to conjure up plates after plates of good ol' comfort food. I have tried their signature dish the devil's mess, banana walnut pancakes, and huevos rancheros and my, my I always end up satisfied and wanting more and more each weekend that passes. (I swear the people there must recognize our faces since we are always at the counter--its the best place to see what kind of dish you want to order for the next time your are there). The prices are reasonable considering they give you a pretty hefty portion. It does get pretty full during peak hours especially if you want to eat outside. If you want to save time, watch some good action in the kitchen, and not mind smelling like the grill then the counter is good for you. The service is great--they are very attentive and always ready to give you more water or coffee. Beware of parking though. Don't park in the strip mall next door, we almost got towed on our 4th visit! Pros: Good portions, reasonable prices, attentive waiter/waitresses, must-see counter Cons: Parking, small bathroom more

ROUTE 66 ICON 12/27/2006

Folks...this was one of the highlights during our Route 66 trip. The grilled cheese sandwich I got one one of the best I have ever eaten! I would recommend it to anyone...and I'm an out of towner. Just go an enjoy. Pros: Route 66, Homemade breads and other great ingredients Cons: Parking more

Good greasy spoon 5/10/2006

Any of the egg breakfasts with potatoes are great. You can't go wrong. Pros: good food, good prices Cons: not enough seating more

Old Faithful 3/25/2006

It's true the place is not pristine, and that parking can be a hassle, but the food is good, the prices are reasonable, and the service is dependable. I especially like the breakfast scrambles and tuna melts. Yum! Pros: good food, outdoor seating, moderately priced Cons: street parking more

Best Breakfast in LA! 12/5/2005

My boyfriend just brought me there a few weeks back and I have to say Millie's is one of the best breakfast spots I've tried in all of LA. It's inexpensive and everything seems homemade. I love it. more

Millie's is amazing. 5/29/2004

This is seriously the best breakfast in LA. It's a little pricey, but it's worth it. I highly suggest the veggie mess (i think that's what it is called). If you're looking for ambiance, go somewhere else. Lots of hipsters. Definately a hangover crowd... (My whole group was hungover). very punk rock breakfast. Pros: good service, prompt, best breakfast in LA Cons: , sort of pricey more

A neighborhood institution 3/5/2003

I don't care if it's a greasy spoon, the food is a cut above what you expect to find (I promise, I'm a food snob) and the service is curt/efficient but friendly. I love the Jackie G. The neptune's mess ain't bad either. But really, the reason I love this place is because the first weekend I was in LA I ran into two old friends there, and knew that Silverlake was going to be my home - I haven't lived farther than 5 blocks from the place since. Pros: Yum, Punk, cheap Cons: greasy more

Good food 2/27/2003

It can get really crowded on the weekends. I'd recommend getting there early or going on a week day. I also like the pancakes and unless something has changed they only serve pancakes weekdays (weird, I know). more

Don't eat here! 12/13/2002

This place is so bad it makes Denny's seem like gourmet fare. They use freeze-dried onions in their omlettes. The food was so bad I had to write a letter to management reminding them they were in the taste business. Pros: clean Cons: bad food more

Obnoxious regulars 10/23/2002

A tiny but LOUD place with little to no elbow room and everyone there is a rock star or screenwriter with a hangover stuttering about the party they just left earlier that morning. But perfect breakfast/brunch food when you've got the craving...it can be worth it if you can get past the Grudge-Glam thing the regulars' got going on. Pros: good diner food, rosemary potatoes! Cons: always crowded, small space, not clean more

I Love Millie's!! 9/20/2002

Hands down the best place for brunch on the Eastside. Great food really cheap, great location, and a huge pile of magazines to peruse. I think they've done away with their ""no phones"" policy, which is a shame (I'd seen waiters refuse to take orders or deliver food to patrons on cellphones). Friendly waitstaff, fun, lowkey patrons. They even turned off the awful free jazz noise squawk they were playing one morning at my hungover request! Stay away if you're scared of hipsters or bar art, however. Pros: Great, cheap food, Cute diner decor, Friendly waitstaff Cons: No air conditioning, sometimes bad music, tattoos more

Saliva spoon. 9/5/2002

Cool hangout but the cleanliness. Watched a waitress stick her thumb in her mouth to lick off sour cream then used the same thumb to swipe sour cream off the serving spoon back into the tub. Dirty utensils and dishes. Just another ""FAD"" ""IN"" place to eat. more

Nice people great food 7/25/2002

The portions are huge for little money. Coffee is pretty good. I recommend the pork chops and eggs. I've noticed this is a favorite of local starz like Vince Gallo and Long Duck Dong from 16 candles - so odd star sightings might accompany your yummy pork chop and egg breakfast. The outdoor seating is sunny and casual. more

2 7/18/2002

This place puts the grease in greasy spoon. I've been there twice and was turned off by the semi-clean silverware and dishware both times. Not sure about the hygiene of the staff either. more

Devil's Mess RULES 7/3/2002

Service is much better than it used to be, but unfortunately the coffee isn't nearly as good as it used to be. But forget the service and coffee, for a kick ass breakfast that's more addictive than crack, try the Devil's Mess. It's sausage scrambled in eggs, cheese, guacamole, sourcream and salsa. With a biscuit and potatoes on the side, breakfast doesn't get any better. more
