My favorite restaurant in Richmond 12/21/2010

This used to be my favorite restaurant in all of Richmond, until the family that runs it opened another restaurant further down Broad called Da Lat. If I want great food, I go there; if I want to hang out with friends or get some beers, then I go to Mekong. Their slogan is ""Beer is the answer"" and their 200 beer menu proves it. more

THE BEST BEER LIST IN TOWN 7/25/2009

This place is truely a Richmond landmark. Great food and great beer . This place is awesome Pros: Inexpensive, great beer selection more

Yuck! 3/12/2009

I've eaten at Mekong many times in the past but the quality of the food has been going down steadily each time I order. Last night will be the last time I order take out from there. The sauces were bland and every piece of meat was full of fat. The spring rolls were mushy and very unappetizing. The owners need to focus some attention in the kitchen and figure out how to make their food good again. more

Used to good, Now its GROSS! Horrible Service! 9/22/2008

I went to this place in summer of 2007 and the food was very good. I went back in in Sep of 2008 and the my entire tables food was bad!! The lime chicken is DISGUSTING and looks like pieces of random mystery meat and brown leaves. Thats it no vegetables or anything just meat served in a dirty looking cooking p0t that looked like they used a million times and brought to the table. The food was so unbearable I ended up eating plain rice and giving it to my dogs. The service is horrible, I went with 2 other people around 3pm and no one else was in there and we still couldnt get any service. The waiter slammed down our drinks, wouldnt even look at us, and sighed heavily when we asked for a coke and instead of just wanting the water they served. The place was also very dingy and dirty. I raved about this place and was the one who recommended it and now really regret it. Dirty nasty food and poor service is what you'll get from Mekong on W. Broad St. more

I wake up craving Mekong's food 11/25/2007

I love this place. I've been more than a dozen times, and it's my favorite place in Richmond. They have such flavorful, fresh, well-priced dishes. My favorites are the grill platter (make your own spring rolls, basically) for about $13 and the rice noodle salad for about $6.50 -- both of which have plenty to fill you up, and the former almost always provides enough for leftovers. It's a lot healthier than American-style Chinese, too. When I get takeout, it's always ready before they say it will be and is always delicious. They even gave it to me for free once, probably because they'd already closed the register. I took a friend from Northern Virginia there when she came to visit, and she liked it so much she wanted to go back the next day, which I thought was great. I took other friends there, and they enjoyed it, too. The service is attentive, but sometimes they are rushed. Also, the vegetable soup I tried once was bland. I'm not crazy about the decor, but it's clean. Lots of vegetarian choices. Reasonably priced drinks with an incredible selection of beer and Belgian ales. I'm sure I'll be eating Mekong food again in the near future. Pros: Good prices, extensive food and beer menus, super-fresh ingredients more

Delicious, well prepared Vietnamese food. Far above average. 1/28/2007

I'm aware that the Mekong has been criticized in previous reviews, and those reviewers surely visited some other Mekong restaurant. I've been to the one at 6004 W. Broad on several occasions, and both my experience and the experience of friends has been that of consistently delicious food, well prepared, courteously served, at a more than reasonable price. I've been to a number of Vietnamese restaurants throughout this area and Southern California, and the Mekong can stand up right alongside any of them. From their own delicious Vietnamese (as opposed to Chinese) version of the old and familiar hot and sour soup through the grilled dishes to the various meat and vegetables in a sauce offerings so typical of many Asian styles of cooking, the Mekong was consistently first rate. I do agree it is not a world-class restaurant, it is not spectacular, but it is consistently delicious, I'd say in the B+ to A- range...which is a marvel in Tidewater, Virginia....especially at their very low prices! I look forward to going there again and again. And to risk ending on a somewhat grumpy note, I'd say that anyone who expects much from ""take-out"" food, who expects high quality food to survive the lengthy journey from the chef's hands to a much later reheated plate at home deserves whatever the food is like at that point and has no grounds for complaint to the original chef. Pros: Delicious food, extensive menu, reasonable prices, friendly service Cons: Spare decor more

Ok food, very popular for some reason 12/5/2006

I've only eaten here once. I have heard many people rave about it, and the weeknight I was there, it was very busy. However I would agree with the prior comment - ""It's not the absolute best, but Richmond is not known for its cuisine. Service was nice and the food was above average."" The food was OK, but bit bland. I eat out a lot, and I'm willing to try anything in order to be novel; so I often ask the wait staff for their picks. Couldn't here because of the lack of English skills. Generally I take that as a good sign in an ethnic restaurant. But it didn't pan out here. I ordered the clay-p0t pork. (Silly CitySearch doesn't like the ""p"" word.) It was very bland. But based on local word of mouth, I will give them another try. And as the prior review said, Richmond hasn?t demonstrated a ton of good food. Pros: Popular Cons: Somewhat Bland more

Total Waste of Money 8/18/2006

Had to work late on a saturday afternoon, so ordered carryout from this place after reading good reviews. I ordered the Orange Chicken. Had to wait a long time past the time they said it would be ready, and when I got the food home it was terrible. There was no orange peel sauce, just a smallish container of overcooked, tough fried chicken nuggets and another small container of cold rice.. When I called back to complain, the person that answered the phone apologized, then said there was nothing they could do and hung up! A total waste of money and very rude to boot. This place did live up to anything close to its reputation. Pros: Don't have to ever go back. Cons: Got my order wrong and then rude about it. more
