Jucy Lucy was great. Probably not good for you, but delicious! Place seemed a little weird being there the first time. Like we didn't know what you are supposed to do and we felt a little hurried by the staff and even other customers waiting for a table. many evenings there is a wait. sometimes the service can be better. but once you get the original jucy to eat, you wouldn't want to be anywhere else. football on the HD tvs. Freebird on the brand new itune juke box and Blue Moon on tap. what else is there..... Not the good burger we had been reading about! 10/6/2006

After reading the reviews we finally drove to Matt's, quite a distance from us I might add, it was a disappointment, both our burgers were over done...crispy meat, very dry and the frys were over done...in fact the table next to us had three baskets of fries made before they would eat them. The setting was just what we had expected...a dive and a good place to go after work, cheap not expensive, certainly not a place to go for a nice dinner out. Good Food... Naughty Waitress 9/11/2006

I'd never been to Matt's Bar. After hearing my boyfriend rave about it for a year and half I really wanted to try it. We decided to go one afternoon for a little date. It was a really cool dive bar! It was really smoky but if you can get past that you'll really like the food. We had juicy lucy's (of course) and fries. One basket will feed several people. The beer was cold. The food was good. I thought the waitress was being really nice until she started butting into our conversation and hitting on my boyfriend. She was at least 7 years older than him and 10 years older than me but she kept on hitting on him. It got to the point where I stopped talking and then he did too! It kinda ruined the end of our meal. Maybe it was because we sat at the bar. I would go again but I would definatley get a booth as far away from the wait staff as possible. I don't know when others have visited, but I have always had fabulous service at Matt's Bar. The Jucy Lucy is still one of the best burgers around, and the fries are near perfection. Don't miss this great neighborhood tradition! more

This place has ok food with really bad service. If you want to be ignored, then I guess this is the right place for you. I only saw one waitress, and she was rude and totally unfriendly. Burger Quality 3/13/2006

I kept hearing how good the burgers were so one day I finally stopped for lunch. It smelled ""sooooooooo"" good when I walked in. I sat down and ordered a ""Juicy Lucy"" and then almost blew a gasket when I watched the cook throw my burger on a fry griddle. There is only one way to have a GREAT burger, on the grill. My own grilled burgers at home are far better. As far as I'm concerned their burgers were below average and might make above average status only if they used a Jenn-Air grill at minimum. Review after review, Matt's burger and fries combo is top rated. While it is inexpensive and decent, I would only rate it average. The food, alright. Service, alright. Price, good. Juicy Luicy Rocks!!! 12/12/2005

Fear the cheese!! Love the burg, love the whole greasy cheese bursting in my mouth, love the wax paper, and love the pop in a can. You have any problems with having no ice, no plate, no fork, bring your own. They splurge the budget on the food. I live in L.A. now, and was just back in Minneapolis this weekend. Its a MUST. I like it that nobody is confusing what this place actually is, a realDive. But it works because the food is good, and they keep the prices down by not providing plates and silverware. While Matt's is your ""typical"" old-fashioned neighborhood bar, there is nothing typical about its premier attraction. The ""Juicy Lucy"" was something I heard about when I first moved to that neighborhood in 1983. I've since moved to another part of Minnesota but every now and then I return to the cities and stop in at Matt's for truly the best burger in the Twin Cities. I was just looking at msn and came across this weeks topic. Earlier thia morning I invited group of friends to go and celebrate one of our b-days at Matt's for Juicy Lucy's. Out of six of us, four have never had one (we call them ""juicy virgin's""). As one stated "" this is the best taste bud orgasm I have had in a long time....we all give Matt's perfect 10's...enough said!!!!! now on to the best coney dogs. My fav. are in lowertown St. Paul. Bring the kids... 7/8/2004

The bar is smoking throughout, but I have always been able to find a non-smoky seat. (Usually near the back.) I'm not afraid to bring the kids...and they have highchairs and even sippy cups if you forget to bring your own! Our friends from California MUST go every time they're in town and their one-year old loves the fries as much as the rest of us. And the Jucy Lucy...no other burger comes close to being this perfect! Matts is a great place to go on a date or with family and friends. There beer is cold and burgers are hot. Oh and the fries and chicken sandwhich are awesome also. The staff is super friendly. Great Burger Dive 9/28/2003

To put it bluntly this place is a dive. The decor inside is dark and kinda grungy. It adds to the experience though. Something says special if a place doesn't need to have the gimmicks to excel. Of course I ordered a jucy lucy. I'd never bother with anything else here. And of course it was fantastic. The fries were also top notch. I do feel that $1.25 for a can of pop was excessive.
