We've been dining at Mandalay for 6 years or so and Erik and Janny have made a unique place. The dishes have generally been consistent, flavorful and spicy - better than most of the local Malaysian and Thai restaurants. We recommend the mussles or spiced lamb appetizers and the Cape Chicken and Malay Lamb curries. However, the changes over the last 3 years have been difficult - painful - for us. We understand that they are under some great competitive pressure, but their move from individualized plates to family style, with rice as a separate item, has confused us. We haven't even tried their wonderful soup since it stopped being served as a part of the standard set meal. As a result of these changes the servers have taken to longer explanations of "how we've changed".
Ah well - my rant. Those who haven't tried Mandalay probably wouldn't even notice and will be blown away by the food.
Beware of the spice with kids. Go for mild.
