Scary Restaurant 5/4/2009

Read the review by Amber6701. Hers was right on. Pros: Eerie like a haunted house Cons: Eerie like a haunted house more

couldnt speak english 4/2/2009

I find it very interesting that people are complaining that the service help coundnt speak english. Isnt that what people want? According to our government thats what we want. We want illegals in this country to do work that we dont want to do. Such work includes, taking our jobs in the construction industry, hotel motel jobs, and most importantly, the job of causing auto accidents and then running back to mexico. Lets not forget about the importance of killing our law enforcement officers also. more

Highly overpriced for the entertainment 8/30/2008

The mandatory valet parking was unnecessary, but i've seen it more expensive. Then you go inside and they ask for a credit card right away so they can open a bill, which you carry around the entire time and give to anyone who wants to charge you anything. The meal is less than expected for a ""fine dining"" restaurant, then you're herded into a line to wait for the ""show"" to start. The sho is no more than a children's magician doing lame old tricks from the 60's and what looks to be his teenage daughter in an oversized dress holding his props for him. Then you get free rein of the place, which only includes two rooms of close up magicians, which again are the same tricks from back in the day, and a lobby/bar with a palm reader and a psychic, which are fine if you pay cash, but if you pay with the tab, the 18% service charge gets added to that too, as well as the valet and $8-9 drinks. If you go with 2 people and plan on drinking, bring more than the reccommended $100. Any more, and it'll drain your wallet dry and leave you wondering what was it for. Pros: I personally liked the decoration, though the best rooms were not being used. Cons: Way too expensive, not that good of food, not very good service. more

Recommendable Magic 8/25/2008

I would highly recommend Magic Island for all occassions. Best service, good food. I had my husbands company function there with ExxonMobil and we really enjoyed the atmosphere (very classy). We received alot of good feed back form our employees and their spouses. I dont understand the out dated bad reviews. more

Best restaurant of the year!! 8/25/2008

These reviews are so out dated!!! I've been to Magic Island twice this year... once for a company function and loved it so much that I took my family. The only magic shows available in houston, and for the pricing was very reasonable compared to other restuarants that cost more... with no entertainment! The service was so good the staff made me feel so pampered. I was very surprised to see all of the bad reviews. more

My Daughter's Best Birthday Ever!!!!!! 8/25/2008

I went to Magic Island for my daughters 16th Birthday party. An we had a BLAST! We came with 2 limos! We were a party of 20! When we entered my daughter and her friends took keepsake photos. We then went up an elavotor that was amazing and when the doors opened we were in the lobby. It was really an elegant and classey place! Then my daughter and her friends had there palms read; that was very exciting. We then went to the dinning room where the staff took well care of us and are needs. I enjoyed there service! The food was great there steaks were cooked at the right tempature. We then were escorted to the magic shows where my daughter actual got to get picked to go on stage and help the magacians do a trick! We had a great time at the magic shows! Overall everything was fabulous! My daughter said that she had the best birthday every. Thank you Magic Island for such an awesome time. I will highly recommend Magic Island to anyone who wants to go and have a great time with their love ones or friends!!!!! Pros: Service was great! more

Awful place 8/1/2008

Absolutely awful..I would give it NO STARS if the review would let me. Pros: None really..other nicer resturaunts have valet parking Cons: about everything..food, service, management (no reciepts) more

we wont be back 7/11/2008

This place is NOT a vegas-style adventure. It smells musty and costs fortune for what you get. The magic island REALLY needs updating, My 13 year old loves David Blaine and Criss Angel and these people are more old school to say the least. (It was hard to stay awake during the card-trick guy and I couldnt really see anyway. ) You feel rushed through your meal to get to the shows, and then the shows are very short. An entertainer/medium/palm reader told my friend that one of her kids was not going to live a full life... I think she REALLY believes shes Sylvia Browne, but that was not ""fun""... Anyway, The staff is odd. They do not smile much or care to interact with customers, they look startled if you asked them a question like ""Wheres the restroom?"" they do not seem to speak english. the kids had a nice time, but they have no concept of $200. Food was not particularly good (probably beause its included-ie cheap) and it started to have a ""trapped in the fun-house feeL"" as there are no clocks or windows. Long wait to get the car. Pros: fun for kids, something different to do Cons: bad food, cost more

Magic RipoffIsland! 10/22/2007

I took my wife for an anniversary celebration at this place. We were expecting a Las Vegas show sort type of thing, but it was as far from it as Houston is from Vegas. The food? You could eat better in Burger King. The price ($37.00 pp) includes just a soup or salad and a main entree. The salad I get from Jack in the Box is by far a lot better than the lettuce tossed in a plate with commercial dressing served at RipoffIsland. About the show, it takes place in a very, very, very small theater and it does not last for more than 15 minutes of the same (three or four) old magic tricks we have seen over and over and over. The only thing we could rescue was the graciousness and beauty of the Magician assistant and yes they know how to dance. But that's it. Pros: Service and Valet parking Cons: Food, quality of the shows, price vs. what you get more

This place absolutely bites!! 8/7/2007

I went here for a friend's birthday 4 years ago and went again recently. Even 4 years ago I felt like this place needed some updating. Now, when I went recently, I thought it was a joke. The food was just as lame the service took forever, the venue looks highly dated (maybe it was ""cool"" in 1995, but not now). As for the magic, I felt like I was a guest at an elementary school kid's party. And, honestly, I was so frustrated with the service and the staff (who barely spoke English) that I could have cared less about the show(s)... the only magic trick they're able to do is staying in business with such lame decorations, lame staff, and high prices. Also, last time I went, it was practically empty. No wonder. Pros: Now knowing never to go back... Cons: Service, pricing, time for service, lame shows, decoration, location, and ambience. more

Rip-Off 6/30/2006

The food was absolutely terrible and overpriced. The service was extremely poor--we had to ask for drink refills numerous times before our requests were fullfilled. Additionally, one of the first questions we were asked when we walked in the door was how we were going to pay. While waiting for our table, we were told to wait in the cigarette-smoke filled bar area, which was in no way separated from the rest of the host/checkout area, with no alternative. Being allergic to cigarette smoke, I found this unacceptable. The decor is shabby, out of date and cheap and needs updating BADLY. Since this is one of the things they advertise as being ""special"" about their venue, they should spend at least a portion of the extremely ridiculous prices they charge updating their look. The valet, hostesses and waitstaff spoke little english, were sketchy, and rude. The magic wasn't bad, but it's not worth the prices they are charging. Overall, this was a waste of money and time and I will not be going back. Pros: The so-so magic shows Cons: Decor, parking, waitstaff more

Big Rip off! 3/15/2006

My wife and I have tried this place twice and both times we have been disappointed. The food is average (the price is not), the so called ambience is just ok and the shows are somewhat entertaining. Overall we would tell the operators that this is Houston we expect better for the price that you are asking. more

Worst dining experience ever, to say the least! 3/4/2006

Our entree took an hour to arrive. Our drinks/dessert NEVER arrived, though we flagged down several waiters who assured us they'd be out shortly. The announcer began calling us for the show, so we asked a waitress what we should do. She said, ""You can wait until the next show, FORTY MINUTES from now, or else pick up your dessert on the way out."" We gave up and left to the show, which lasted less than ten minutes. We were herded like COWS to the cashier and when we asked for our dessert, she rolled her eyes! After being questioned, we waited for it to be brought down and packed. Our bill was $170. My fiance and I enjoy dining at Houston's finest restaurants and always leave happy. Don't be fooled into believing that this place offers ""fine dining."" I've never posted a review, but this was a sickening embarrasment. Pros: NONE! Cons: terrible service, not worth the price more

valentines day 2/19/2006

We went for dinner a couple of friend my boyfriend and I. the valet parking was fast and courteous. We went in and were told to wait at the bar. Didnt mind because the environment was different and interesting we enjoyed the wait. They was a fortune teller and a blackjack table to entertain. We were seated after a short wait. Staff was kind and the service was good. Returned to the bar then escorted to a waiting room a magician came in for a short show of close up magic. Then we were informed that the main show was starting. It was comic and magic. The only negative point was a long line for the check out and it took us about 20 mins to get to the register. Overall great experience! Very much recommended and worth the money. We where there for 4 hours and it was great!!! Pros: good service, great enviornment, worth the money Cons: long check out line more

HOLIDAY OFFICE PARTY 12/7/2005

We had our office Holiday party at The Magic Island, and what a wonderful surprise! We were greated by wonderful staff (the valet took a little while...but tis the season) and had a fun reception in the lounge(again a little crowded) We were then escorted to a wonderful room where much attention was given to our needs as a group(hats off to Leann) The Magic shows were great, still wondering HOW DID HE DO THAT? This is truly a great place for food (wonderful) and fun. I will be back. Pros: The food was great, The up close magic, Live music in lounge Cons: wait for valet more

A Magical Adventure! 12/6/2005

I went to The Magic Island recently, for my birthday. There were eight of us in my group and we had a wonderful time. The magic is amazing, which overcomes the fact that the food isn't five star. The ambience is very mysterious and the employees are very attentive to your needs. It's a little expensive, but the entertainment is well worth it. If you like magic, then check it out. Pros: Great Magic!, Good Food! Cons: Expensive! more

Christmas Party Disaster 12/3/2005

We waited 35 minutes to valet park, a required $ 5 fee. We then went to the lounge where I was pestered by the host before I could use the bathroom. Our 7:30 seating got pushed back to 8 because some people were still waiting to get inside, some over an hour. However, we were still required to view the 9 show, giving us only about 1 hour to eat the meal. The snapper was marginal, very little shrimp and crabmeat on top. It said it was sautéed, but it looked fried to me. The steak came out rare, without asking first. We waited 40 minutes for everyone else to fill up the theater, for the 9 show. It only lasted 20 minutes, very disappointing after all the waiting. We left when it was over and had to wait with about 50 others for our car, 30 more minutes. Pros: good for large groups Cons: parking, crowded, total chaos more

User review by hkhajavi 7/15/2005

I have recently visited Houston and heard a lot about the Magic Island. So, one night I decided to go with a group of my girlfreinds. We had a great time. It is so obvious that the whole staff and management are doing their best to make you feel comfortable. If you want to treat your freinds, take them to Magic Island. Highly recommend it! Pros: Unique, Entertaining more

fun experience 3/2/2005

Had a great time, food was okay but the experience was something nice to remember. The shows were fun, but more for little kids more

Magic Disappointment 12/7/2004

Where do I start? How about the 25 minute wait on the feeder road trying to get to the valet station? Or maybe the 9 o'clock seating when we were supposed to be seated at 8 p.m. Service was extremely poor, with a disorganized waitstaff that was apathetic. It took repeated requests to get water and tea glasses refilled. We were told that they ""ran out"" of wine, and was refused a wine list. The horseradish that accompanied the prime rib arrived at the END of the meal. Portions were small considering what we paid. Due to the extraordinary wait, half of our group had to leave before the show. Perhaps it was just a bad night, but I cannot in good consciencous recommend this place to anyone. Take your $75 per person and go somewhere else. Cons: , Hard to park, Sub-standard service more
