My friends and I stopped by here one night just for some appetizers. Upon seeing they were serving cow tongue on a hot rock, we had to order it. The cow tongue was brought out in raw thin slices. The concept is to cook your meat on a super hot rock they bring out with it. The tongue tasted just like roast beef. The experience was really memorable and great for those who like a little excitement in their food. more

Favorite sushi place in Houston 11/27/2009

I have been to almost every sushi restaurant in Houston (Tokyohana, Miyako, AKA, Kata Robata, Azuma, Zushi, Oiishi, Sake, Osaka, Uptown, Hokkaido, Japaneiro's, etc.) and this is by far the best sushi restaurant in Houston for SUSHI !! I have never been disappointed in coming here. They make the BEST and only ""Japanese salad"" in Houston. There is no other place in Houston that makes the sauce they use in this salad! It's delish! I enjoy their ""Golden Treasure"" roll and their ""Hanabi"" roll. My friends especially enjoy the Nemo roll and some other spicy rolls I can't quite handle. I wouldn't necessarily recommend eating their bento entree boxes...that's not what they are known for people. They are known for specifically their sushi. If you want generic bento boxes, go to Miyako or something, but if you want great sushi or sashimi, go here! I absolutely love this place and have loved it for the past 8 years of my life! They have a new owner now so if you see an older caucasian man coming to your table to ask you how your food is, that's him. Pros: Fresh sushi everytime! Cons: Restaurant needs a facelift more

Not Good 5/18/2009

Started out great wht the Kaneyama roll then it all went down hill. Ordered a Spider roll and it was fake Krab - ugh. The Terriaki and Tempura was tasteless - definately not worth the money Pros: Kaneyama Sushi was good Cons: Used Fake Krab in rolls and terriaki tasteless more

Decent sushi, Below average entrees 7/11/2008

Kaneyama is a nice place to quell that hankering for some sushi, but don't expect it to be up to the standards of Azuma or Musashino (Austinites know what I'm talking about). The fish is surprisingly fresh and tasty, but the sushi rice isn't up to par to help bring out the best flavor of the fish in the nigiri sushi. However, their rolls are pretty good and comparable to their prices. I suggest trying the Nemo roll and the Kaneyama roll. Pros: Fresh fish Cons: Mediocre entrees, Slow service more

Good consistant food 5/11/2008

We go to Kaneyama about twice a month for the past 6 or so years. We enjoy the food and most of the wait staff knows us. 29 out of 30 times the fish is great...occasionally the fish isn't the best and we leave it. The udon and rice bowls are great. The tempura banana with vanilla ice cream is very yummy, an occasional treat. We skip busy hours and opt for Sunday brunch usually, as service is much better. The times we have gone weekend evenings, the staff is very much over-whelmed and are not very attentive and the wait is quite long. I dont blame the staff though, that is a management decision. i've been going to kaneyama for maybe about 3 years now. not very frequent but when we want sushi, this is the best place to go. we tried all the trendy places like RA and miyako which are over priced and not as fresh. more

Very reasonable in price, extremely fresh, great atmosphere, and creative sushi combos 2/4/2008

Kaneyama's is by far my favorite sushi spot in Houston. When I lived in Austin, I missed it terribly. The fish is so fresh that I am a loyal patron for life. Its very hard to get me to go anywhere but Kaneyamas. The Dragon Roll and Nemo Roll are to DIE FOR! They have good happy hour deals on drinks. The service is pretty good as well. Out of places I have tried in Houston and Austin, Kaneyamas always has the best salmon. Hands down. more

Kaneyama Japanese Restaurant offers a few drink specials which include Asahi beer and sake during their happy hour. No food items go on the happy hour menu, unfortunately. Pros: Big, fresh sushi pieces Cons: Not-so-great happy hour more

horrible service 10/4/2007

i been eating there a couple of years since i moved in town. There are always fresh fish and new stuff everytime. i even have the silver VIP membership. In past two months, i went there with my friend a few times, i wanna say we got almost no serivce. I understand that was dinner rush hour, or probably shor-handed at waitstaff. Our first roll came out fast, the rest of our food took forever after all our appetizer plates and drink were empty,,,, and another 20 min, then finally,,,, the waitress stopped by check on us. another time we been in there after dinner rush hour, the whole resaurant wasn't filled with 1/3 of tables. but the food still take long to bring out, and one of my friend never got his drink. we had to search whole restaurant to find our waitress. for such unattentive service, i wouldn't recommend for important events in that place. Good service, but poor taste on food 9/19/2007

i found litte difference with other user. i been that place two days ago with friends. That is 3rd time i went in there. Honestly, i don't really recommed that place, but one of my friend loves the sushi there. overall wasn't so bad, but nothing outstanding, and price is little high for a place like that. The servie we got was good, staff is knowlegable, and attentive, but i won't trust them about the specials they recommend everytime. Those are expensive, but tasteless, don't waste your money on those. i would just go for my usual stuffs. more

Awful 9/7/2007

We had 4 adults and 1 child. The food was awful. It hardly had any flavor at all. After we got our food the waitress never came to check on us. The best part was when I got home I was sick as a dog. I was throwing up among other things. I took some pepto and went to bed with the worst cramps ever all night long. Woke up the next morning and I am still sick. I would not recommend this place. FYI my 11yr old son loved the Ramen noodle. Pros: The Ramen was good. Cons: I got sooooo sick! more

Use the Sushi Bar avoid subpar waite stuff 6/1/2007

II have mixed emotions about this one. Great food most of the time (I eat there often) Service on the other hand is 2nd rate and I am being charitable. Waitresses congregate by the register and when you try to get some service they will respond when good and ready. That?s actually better then the middle aged female hostess, she will just ignore you ant that?s that. (Big time ""no my job"" attitude) more

Horrific...never again. 4/10/2007

Absolutely horrifically bad..YES, INCREDIBLY BAD.. lack of service, food had no taste so must not be fresh.. had sushi which was rubbery and smelly, worst tempura because it was similiar to Long John Silver's. I would not come back or recommend this place to even my worst enemy. Don't waste your time and money here. Pros: Nothing is good about this place Cons: Rubbery smelly tasteless sashimi and sushi, lack of service more
