My friends and I stopped by here one night just for some appetizers. Upon seeing they were serving cow tongue on a hot rock, we had to order it. The cow tongue was brought out in...

Recommend this place! 3/23/2007

Like the previous reviewer, I too, would definately recommend Kaneyama. Their sushi is great - so much so that we drive way out of our way to go here often. My favorite is to sit at the sushi bar - I enjoy the environment and watching the chefs create the dishes. This is not a fancy place, but neither is it too casual. They also have a few private rooms which I don't see at a lot of Japanese places anymore as they've all gone to the grills to fill up their space. Pros: great sushi, good value Cons: not for the trendsetter crowd more

Been going here for the past 10 years... 3/11/2007

Honestly, Kaneyama has the BEST SUSHI in Houston! I've tried almost every single sushi restaurant in Houston and no other place comes close to this one. I'm sick of all the high class sushi places that have recently opened up in Houston...especially the ones that charge an arm and leg for their sushi just because they can. I could care less about paying for the atmosphere. Instead, I want good food at a REASONABLE price. I have to admit that their service isn't the greatest, but they don't intentionally try to snub you or purposely try to ignore you. I've always been pretty much understanding when it comes to service bc I've been a waitress myself, so sometimes they are really busy or can really just be waiting on the chef to finish making the order. I understand that the food might take awhile, but hey, at least it's good when it comes out...and it's always fresh! Unless you want to stick to the fancy smansy sushi places like Uptown Sushi, Azuma, or Sake ...then I guess I wouldn't recommend this place. ..but I do recommend it for sushi lovers. Try their appetizer...forgot what it was called but I just went last weekend and it was some sort of appetizer where they cut thin slices of rib eye steak and you cook it on a rock that sits over a flame! The sauce that goes with it is divine. Something like that at Azuma would cost you at least $15 or more bucks, but at this place I think it's only under $10! Pros: Fast Seating, Good food at a good price, casual dining Cons: might have to wait at least 20-30 minutes for food to come out, not a great location if you're looking to eat at a trendy place and location more

Unbeliveably BAD... 2/6/2007

Even though we were seated promptly and got our waters refilled. Service was horrible, took FOREVER to get our food. Rice on sushi was over-packed and hard, didn't have settle taste of sweetness like fresh authentic Japanese rice. I would never come back or recommend this place, very disappointed. Try Aka or Cafe Japon. Cons: Service - took forever to get food, Quality of Food. more

Want good service and good food? DON'T COME HERE! 2/6/2007

My family and I went there last night; five adults in all. Food was very average and the salmon sashimi had absolutely no taste. We were served with the food at extremely slow pace, no one ever came by to ask how we were doing and struggled to get attention each time to remind them on items we ordered they forgot bring. We fought to get attention all they way to getting our check. Two tables of four had came and left but we were still there for over 2 hours when the restaurant was not even half full the entire time. In addition, the Dragon Roll was listed on the menu for $7.50 but charged us $10.95. When as asked about the price, she said they just changed it and wouldn't honor the price on the menu! Waitress blamed the slow service on the hew guy in the back.. Yeah..., sure... Now I remember why I have not been back in 5 years, it was the HORRIBLE SERVICE! I would not recommend this restaurant to anybody based on quality or value of the food and service. Cons: Service, value, food more

First Timers Joy 10/2/2006

I have ""tried"" sushi a few times but never was bold enough to go to a restaurant and partake in the complete experience. The staff was excellent. From the time we came through the door until our departure - all of our questions had been answered thoroughly and all of our wants and needs were attended too. I love a place where you can experience something new but also learn about another culture. The sushi was OFF THE CHAIN...meaning it was way past good! There were a few things that I tried for the first time and it won't be a second - just due to my taste buds..LOL. Everything was fresh and I was overly pleased with my experience. I'll be back.... Pros: prompt seating, attentive staff, fresh food Cons: first timers should get a gift more

Best sushi I've ever eaten! 6/27/2006

This is the best sushi restaurant in Houston, period. We've visited about 8 times and have never been disappointed. Their restaurant is beautiful, with a very traditional menu and beautiful interior. The waitstaff were courteous and helpful. Their sushi was some of the freshest and most delicious I've ever had; the Hotategai was especially good, it was so fresh and had absolutely no smell. Among my favorites are their beef kushiyaki (cooked on a hot stone at your table) and the plum icecream, both were amazing. I'd definitely recommend visiting during non-peak hours to get the fastest service. Pros: easy out front parking, food, service more

JUST EXCELLENT! 4/22/2006

Master chefs prepare what has to be the worlds freshest fish. I have eaten everywhere and this place is the best for the real sushi enthusiast. Not flashy, just fantastic. more

Always a delight! 1/22/2006

We have been eating at this place since 2001, and we've always had a great meal experience in the end. Salmon sushi is always a wonderful melt-in-your-mouth experience, and the tuna sushi is always fresh. Spicy tuna rolls are better here than in most places I've eaten at in Houston. Prices for sushi pieces are about average. It gets pretty packed on Friday evenings, and service can run a little slow at those times. Come on a weekday and the place become a nice and quietplace to bring a date. Atmosphere is not stuffy at all, and the hostesses always welcome with a smile. If you're a regular, the service is always good. We've taken out of town guests to this place and all agree how great the food is. The one caveat: Don't eat here for lunch. Sushi pieces do not taste as good as during the dinner time. Pros: Great Sushi, Not uptight, Attentive Waiters Cons: Don't go during lunch more

Overall-F A N A S T I C 1/10/2006

It was my second time being there and it was great like the first. Luckily we came in on Wednesday and our server had recommended many fish off the menu that just arrived. The horse mackeral and fatty tuna was so fresh. And the little baby crabs were so cute, but had to eat 'em!!! The staff was really friendly and knowledgable of the menu. The manager event brought over a coloring sheet for my daughter. I would definetly go back to Kaneyama. Pros: beautiful fish tank, fresh fish Cons: haven't found one yet more

The ONLY place to eat sushi 6/12/2005

This place has the BEST sushi and Japanese food. I wouldn't go anywhere else. The food is the freshest and I have NEVER been disappointed. Pros: fresh sushi, tatami rooms, service more

Great Sushi 5/10/2005

I started eating sushi at this restaurant. We have never been disappointed with the food. This service is slow, but who cares. The food is really good. The green tea ice cream is really good. Pros: food more

Sushi-good, service-bad 12/28/2004

The service at Kaneyama was appalling. Even with the manager involved at our table, we had to repeatedly ask for items. Large parts of our order never made it to the table, and the waiter's snarky attitude left a bad taste in our party's mouth. Pros: sushi Cons: , portions, salads more

Best Japanese 7/6/2003

I've eaten a lot of shushi in Houston -- this is the best I've had! The place isn't packed giving you and your guest the oppurtunity to have dinner discussions. The service is typical japanese, slow. However, the staff is very friendly and accomodating. Finally, the food...WOW! Kaneyama has some wonderful and unusual dishes you won't see on other menus. The food is fresh and well prepared. I highly recommend this as your next shushi stop! Pros: Fresh Fish, Creative Dishes, Quite Atmostphere more

decent sushi 6/13/2003

This place isn't really spectacular or anything.. although the sushi is pretty fresh. They can't touch cafe japon's happy hr sushi prices though. more

Great Menu and Service 5/6/2003

Has a wonderful, extensive menu. The staff is knowledgable about the foods. Kid Friendly, but no kids menu. We love going on sunday afternoons. It is great for taking friends and company to because they have something for sushi lovers and haters alike. Pros: Extensive Menu, Healthy Choices, Kid Friendly Cons: Busy Weekend Nights, Sometimes slow more

Worst Japanese Restaurant in Town 3/11/2003

We didn't like the atmosphere. We didn't like the so call ""manager"", or the wait staff. The food wasnt that great. We brought our friend there for her birthday and were so disappointed with their service. The dishes were dirty in addition to second class service. On top all of that, you have to pay 18% tips! We wont be coming back. Dont go there. Spend your money at other Japanese restaurants in town. Pros: What Pros Cons: service, food, cleanliness more

What happened to service? 2/15/2003

Kaneyama is our favorite sushi place and Japanese restaurant in town. The food has always been, and continues to be very fresh and of the finest quality. For sushi, we usually sit at the bar, and the service has always been excellent. Tonight we sat at the right side (the smokers side) of the bar: service was abominable. The sushi chefs didn't acknowledge our existence all night (about 3 hours) and the waitress assigned to us was on an interplanetary trip. She confused ourt orders, was slow and unattentive, in addition to being clumsy and klutzy. We hope the manager listened to our litany. Otherwise, Kaneyama is going down the drain! Pros: food Cons: service, service, service more
