josie makes me smile 6/18/2006

WOW! Took my father and fam for Dads day. The waiter could not have been any more professional, I almost felt embarrassed when I asked about the ""sepia"". I do know a little about good food, but the staff guided both me and my family through the menu with complete ease. We were excited to order everthing!!! AND, we did!! It was probably, the best experience we have shared, as a family, in a restaurant. Not only did we feel important, but we laughed and enjoyed some of the most amazing food ever!!! We felt at home for the first time in a fine dining establishment. more

NOT WORTH IT!! 5/1/2006

at 175 smackers (for two people) this place is definitely NOT WORTH it. but you know what? even if it had only be $100, i'd still feel that way. the food was underwhelming, flavor-wise, the service was AWFUL. the restaurant wasn't even that busy, and after they seated us, (at a not-so-great table, when there were good ones available, mind you) the waiter took fifteen minutes to come over and pay attention to us! not only that, most of the diners were senior citizens, so the whole place is so subdued, it felt like you could take a nap. don't go! more

Good, but not great 11/22/2005

I was excited to try this place b/c the menu looked great. I was a bit disappointed. I started with a fig and goat cheese tart which was basically just a crispy pastry shell with some arugula, figs, and a few goat cheese crumbles laying inside it. Not what I expected and not very impressive. I had the short ribs ""tagine"" for an entree. They were about average for short ribs. Boyfriend had steak and said it was fine if a bit chewy. We split a chocolate dessert, I think it was bread souffle. It was tasty, but not memorable. Overall, this meal was fine and pleasant, but overpriced for the quality. I don't believe that this place warrants the extremely high ratings it gets in citysearch, zagats, etc. Pros: good service, pleasant atmosphere Cons: overpriced more

Fastastic! 11/10/2005

One of the best places to eat in LA. On par with the best of Chicago and New York. Good wine list, helpful staff, wonderful food, great ambiance. Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere more

Amazing Food and Dessert but Pricey 3/8/2005

The food was amazing as well as the service. A very cool small restaurant. The desserts were great as well but ending up spending almost $50 a person and didn't even have drinks. more

Haughty attitude; nasty owner! 2/22/2005

Chef Josie Le Balch makes really good food, but her husband's very haughty manner and bad attitude really ruined the experience for us. Cons: nasty owner, Haughty attitude, poor service more

Terrible experience 12/21/2004

As I entered the restaurant I had to walk through a cloud of smoke just exhaled by the owner. Had reservations for weeks for party of 13. I announced our presence to the maiter'd, everyone arrived, chatted around the bar for a while. Asked to be seated, they had no table ready then tried to put us at two separate tables. Food lacked flavor; steaks were poorly prepared; poor menu choices; servers constantly spilled wine. Terrible all around. Pros: street parking, nice bathroom, polite bus boys Cons: , poor service, bad steaks more

good food 12/3/2004

Josie restaurant is very generous with their portions. I ordered the salad and my boyfriend ordered the butternut squash soup and frog's legs for appetitizers. After that, we were half full already. We literally ate 1/3 of the entrees (short ribs and red snapper) I love the short ribs! However, when we asked the staff to box the left-overs for us, I guess she's not used to people bring left-overs or what, she just threw everything away. I thought it was a waste of food!!! I was kinda upset with that. Otherwise, their food was good. Pros: generous portions, good food, ambience more

Memorable Food and Outstanding Service 10/21/2004

One of the best restaurants I have been to on the Westside. Broad and inventive menu with great choices for different tastes. Excellent wine list with a good selection of by the glass and half bottles. We took my mother here for her 60th birthday and it could not have been better. Very attentive service and memorable dishes made it a great evening. Don't be fooled by the location on an unsuspecting block of Pico, this restaurant is first class. Equally appropriate for special occasions and business dinners. Pros: Service, Great menu, Extensive wine list more

a wild burger 5/15/2004

I dined at Josie about a year ago, and I am dying to back to have the same dish I had: the buffalo burger. If you're a burger lover, it will blow you away. The meat is on the sweet side, cooked perfectly, with the best fixin's and homemade mayo and ketchup and mustard. Served with fries touched with truffle. Overall it was an impeccable dining experience with service to match. You feel almost like royalty. Pros: food, service Cons: , very expensive more

Disappointing 5/12/2004

I went with expectation of have a great meal. The food just wasnt as flavorful as I would have liked. Others say different, so maybe I just had a bad experience. The crowd is mature (old), so I think most of them probably didnt have that many taste buds left. I would probably try this place again, just because Im hoping its better and I know how highly regarded she is. Theres no scene here, just food. Pros: Service Cons: , Old crowd more

Special Treat 4/2/2004

Ate their tonight. Fantastic meal. Service was attentive, discreet & informative. Will return for another special evening. Wine list was pricey. $173 (including tax+tip) for two people: one appetizer, two main courses, one dessert, one tea and one bottle of wine. Pros: Service, Food more

Best in town 2/15/2004

Spent my birthday here; service was top-notch, food was spectacular -- probably my best experience in town, and the ambience was comfortably home-like. These people know how to run a restaurant. It's pricey, but worth it. Pros: Service, Welcoming, Food, food, food! more

A+++ 11/24/2003

Being in my twenties, I'm used to nicer restaurants treating my wife and I poorly. But at Josie, we felt like guests of honor. The waiter was excellent making tons of superb recommendations. the food was outstanding. Everything we had was fantastic. I don't have a bad thing to say about the place. Can't wait to go back. Pros: great service, excellent food more

Wonderful! 9/11/2003

Food was fabulous. Get the Mushroom pastry ""sandwitch"" for appetizer. Pros: Charming, Fancy, Awesome Food more

Wonderful surprise 6/2/2003

I've always read about the place, and finally had a chance to try it out! The friendly and informative staff helped us with some great selections. Nice, relaxed atmosphere. And the rack of lamb was juicy and tender. Definately try this place out! more

Go for it! 2/5/2003

There's an old saying: If you live in Santa Monica and you're caught having dinner east of Sepulveda, you're having an affair. This restaurant is one reason never to venture out of this oceanside city. Superb and talented chef delights you, always. Expensive, but you'll remember it. And want to go back. Pros: Inventive food, Comfortable, Delightful more

GO, again and again 1/29/2003

Been 4 times with no end in sight. Josie is the best. Known for game foods (wild boar, venison, roo ribs, etc.), her fish and vegetable dishes are excellent too. Some great bargains also exist on the wine list. And you'll love the bar that was once the backdrop in Gunsmoke. Pros: food quality, menu choices, service more

the best ever!! 11/8/2002

everything that comes out of chef josie le balch's kitchen is absolutely mouth-wateringly delicious, and perfect. her husband and co-owner frank delzio manages the restaurant with effortless grace and class. be sure to book ahead of time as reservations can be difficult. i have been there many, many times and have yet to be even remotely disappointed with the service, ambience, and above all, the quality of food... it's a bit pricey but that's because josie only uses the finest ingredients, which cost money.. right down to the butter served with the bread.... Pros: valet parking, amazing food, wonderful ambience Cons: not good for groups, not good for kids more

EXCELLENT 8/7/2002

NICE PLACE FOR A SMALL GROUP, SHOULD MAKE RESERVATIONS. FOOD EXCELLENT AND UNSUAL. more
