Great Quality 5/6/2010

I love your food! It is high quality, presentable, affordable and in my neighborhood. What I don't understand, is that you allow no substitutions...as in you have mushrooms in the kitchen but won't let me add any to my eggs unless I want to create my own omlet??/But I just want to add mushrooms That is 1) very, very poor customer service and 2) implies you have an incompetent chef who can only do what is prescribed. Please, please change this policy. Pros: Cool neighborhood, great food Cons: no substitutions more

Coffee unlike any other 2/1/2010

A little jaded or numb to coffee? This will give you a nice ""Ah ha"" experience. more

BAD, BAD customer service 8/7/2009

First off, let me say the waitress was wonderful and tried to make up for what happened. It was the manager that was horrible: My mother in law and I went for a spa day at Malu across the street (FABULOUS). I wanted to ""keep it local"" so we went to John Street Cafe for lunch. I'd been there once before and just wasn't all that impressed. Fairly expensive, mediocre food. I ordered a $13 chicken quesadilla. It didn't have a lot of flavor, but every quesadilla is different. I found a small bone in the first bite I took. Okay--that happens, it was small, no biggie. By the 3 piece I found a chicken wing!!!!! Not just a 2-inch bone, but the bone, a joint and another bone! I couldn't eat anymore because I was grossed out. I told the waitress what happened and showed her the wing. She was appalled and apologize profusely. She took it back to the kitchen and the manager said, ""Well it's not like we meant to put it in there. It was a mistake. If she doesn't want it, too bad."" WE. COULD. HEAR. HER!!! We were offered NO compensation! I would have been happy to pay half, I did eat the soup and almost 1/2 of the quesadilla. Seriously? I will NEVER be back and I will tell everyone I know to avoid it. You just can't be so horrible to customers in a town where there's a great breakfast around every corner. John Street Cafe, I'm done with you! Pros: in St. Johns which is up & coming Cons: high priced, horrible customer service, average food more

Best food in St. Johns and worth the trip to St. Johns all on its own 12/8/2008

John Street Cafe is by far the best restaurant in St. Johns and is on a par with most other quality places you go in Portland. I've never had a bad meal there. The breakfasts are unghodly good and the pancakes are a religious experience for some. Lunches are innovative, fresh and delicious and in all things they use excellent ingredients. They have unusual hours and between this and the fact that I'm a very late riser on weekends, I don't go there for breakfast as often as I go other places, but I wish I did. Service is always good, thought they are often really busy on weekends and tough to get in to. I've waited for a table most times I've been there on a weekend. Everything is good. People who visit us that we take there cannot believe we are hiding this place away from the rest of Portland. Once discovered it becomes an excuse for friends and business associates to come to our neck of the woods. We're lucky to have them. Pros: just about everything Cons: unusual hourse and sometimes hard to get in more

Excellent Breakfasts & Friendly Service! 11/12/2008

This is a great place to have an incredible breakfast. There is limited seating, so usually will find a short wait. Well worth standing around, the staff always offers warm coffee for those of us waiting outside. Also you can check out what everyone else is eating.. this is how I found out what I wanted during the first visit. ""The Special of the Day""... a huge pancake with green apples, filberts, and berries. Absolutely devine! Great friendly service in a small neighborhood atmosphere. Don't forget to have a slice of pumpkin bread or bannana bread while you wait for your meal. The omlet with peppers, onions, cheese, avacado and bacon was fabulous as well. It was served with toast and potaoto wedges. Pros: Friendly Service, Exceptional Food, Great Value Cons: Limited Seating, Short Wait (But well worth it) more

Horrible Customer Service - very disappointed!! 10/29/2008

Wow, was I expecting something different. After hearing good reviews and walking by this place a million times and seeing it so crowded I expected something very different. First my partner and I walk in wait to be seated, then notice a list with four peoples names written on it - though we are the only people standing there and no one else appears to be waiting for tables we wrote our names down. (Note there was a table open with two seats). While we waited, two other men came in saw the list with now five people ""waiting,"" when really only two people were waiting and immediately walked out. We were soon seated because, of course there were not four other people waitied. Now, my partner and I are vegetarian and I'm vegan. Now most restaurantsat least have one things on the menu we can order. I ordered the black bean tortilla and asked if I could have the avacodo and sourcream taken off. The waitress told me I could not have the sourcream taken off. Now, I'm sorry, but some people are 1) lactose intolerant, 2) vegan, 3) just don't like sour cream and though I understand ""no substitutions"" asking to have something removed from a tortilla, is not a substitution. Cons: Horrible Customer Service more

Best place in St. John's 8/29/2008

This is a great spot in St. John's. The service is exceptional and the food is consistently good. They never let your coffee cup get less than half full. Pros: everything more

Sadly disappointed... 5/19/2008

The John Street Cafe is in my neighborhood, so needless to say I go there often and have always been very happy with the food and service. I went yesterday with a friend and the staff seemed frazzled by the nice weather and the opening of the outdoor section. When we were told our table was ready we headed back to the patio and watched two people sit down at the table that was ours. more

My favorite for breakfast! 3/8/2008

Here's what you do... order the omelette select, and in the paragraph of stuff you could throw into it, go down the list and ask for every single item you like (and I mean every one). For example I usually order an omlette with feta, walnuts, salsa, bacon, black beans, italian sausage, sauteed onions and brie (I might be forgetting an item or two). What you will recieve is nothing short of a mountain of omlette heaven. Pros: Best breakfast in portland, great people, outside seating when weather permits Cons: small tables, long lines more

One of the best breakfast's in North Portland 1/19/2008

I come here about once a month and always forget to write a review! more

Black bean omelette...'nuff said 7/23/2007

Well, not really. Everything I've had here is good. I haven't been recently, but in the past the wait staff has always been very pleasant, despite being consistently busy throughout the weekend. If you're lucky, in the summer snag a table outside--you'll forget you're in the middle of busy St. John's. Pros: food, patio, omelettes Cons: sometimes a long wait more

Consistent quality food restaurant 7/18/2007

I've been to the John's Street Cafe in St. Johns many times through the years and for a Portlander it's a trip I enjoy. On a weekend morning you may want to go early to beat the line. And why is there a line you ask? That?s a great sign saying GREAT FOOD INSIDE! I love all the omelets and my fav's are the bacavo, the chicken with sour cream and the bean omelet. Pros: Great food, Great Service more

Worth the drive 8/9/2006

No matter what you order the food is always the best! John St. has a very clean atmosphere and friendly staff. Specials are unique and change often enough that there is always something NEW to try, but then the problem is not ordering your favorite item. more

worth the drive! 4/23/2005

she says: tastes great! this was the third time I've been here and I really think it's a great spot for breakfast. I have had the bacavo omelette twice, it is one of my favorite omelettes in town. fair prices and high quality goodness! he says: I was a first timer and was greatly impressed by food and thoughtful service. If I lived nearby I would be there every weekend. Pros: great service, great food more

Best Grilled Cheese EVER! 6/26/2004

I've had 5 breakfasts and 4 lunches in 3 mos. The food is excellent and consistent. The grilled cheese is crispy and has so much flavor. The sausage at breakfast is the best in the city. And salads are always made with the best. If you have a child, they get to play with Gumby! My only complaint is they are not open for dinner. Pros: Great Food, Easy Parking, Wait not long more

PANCAKES!!! 9/3/2003

By far the best pancakes in Portland. The size of a dinner plate 1 1/2"" thick and for only $4!!! Pros: Food, Price, Quality Cons: busy, can be long lines more

Great Breakfast 2/21/2003

I love thier food so much! You might want to go there when you have time to wait and chat with friends. SOMETIMES you have to wait for a long line to get to the seat or food, but it will be worth eating there! more
