very friendly environment. helpful staff. my colorist Alessandra is great!! you feel attended to. i is not pretentious and they want to be sue you are a happy camper when you leave. i would highly reccomend the salon:) more

This beautiful, fun, spacious, hip and stylish salon is home of one of the greatest stylists - Jen! My hair cut is amazing. I've got body, and texture, and movement. My hair just swings. This is the BEST hair cut I've had!!! When you walk in you notice the staff is excited to be there, and the mood quickly becomes contagious. Finally, NATURAL hair color! 5/21/2006

I decided I wanted to lighten my hair and get some highlights. This always scares me a little, since I don't want the typical bleached orange ""that's what happens when you highlight"" hair. I told Karen this and she told me not to worry that she would never do that to someone. I relaxed and let her do her thing. I got natural looking lighter brown hair with beautiful carmel highlights. It was amazing, No Orange! \r I also saw Jen who got my hair straight and shiny. She really spent her time going over it with a brush and dryer, and then a a straight iron. Style and Cool without the attitude!!! 5/21/2006

If you want to be ahead of everyone else style wise, then Karen is the girl to see. When I first saw her I thought she was going to be one of those ""Too cool"" stylists, but it turns out she was funny, friendly, and down to earth (She could be ""Too Cool"", she's got the look). After talking about what I wanted and what she thought would be best for me, she went ahead and gave me the most beautiful blonde I'd ever seen. I've gotten so many compliments on my hair. It's perfect. Karen also kept me entertained with her funny stories and off beat sense of humor. She got the whole salon engaged in conversation. I walked out feeling uplift and energized, and looking like a rock star (Take one look at Karen, and you'd expect nothing less). Great Cut & Color with No Attitude 5/19/2006

After searching for a good stylist for a few years (trust me, I've had some bad experiences) I finally decided to go Janet Rufin's based on the Citysearch reviews. I have to admit, I was a little skeptical taking advice from reviewers who I don't even know, however I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is cozy, comfortable with good lighting and there's a backyard where you can get some air while you're waiting for your highlights to set in. There was no attitude which is a huge plus for me. Jennifer did my color and highlights and she was amazing!! She was friendly and accommodating and and did a great job. I left the salon feeling amazing. Although it's a bit expensive, I knew I got what I paid for and didn't feel taken advantage of. I would highly recommend the salon and will definitely be going back soon. Pros: Friendly Staff, Atmosphere Cons: Somewhat Pricey more

A salon oasis in the city 5/15/2006

I recently had my hair cut at Janet Rufin's salon. I was pleasantly surprised by the salon. Many salons in NYC suffer from image overload. There are flashy lights, loud music, self important black-clad stylists who insist you call them Sting or Dragon. You will find none of those trappings at Janet Rufin. The space is open and chic and you feel welcome from the minute you walk in the door. The stylists are friendly and provide expert opinions about color and cut. I have extrememly curly hair, and Mary, my stylist, straightened my hair with a flat iron and literally went over every strand to determine if it was healthy or if it needed to go. By the time she was done, my hair was soft and shiny and it was all because of the cut. I had washed my hair that morning with my own shampoo. more

From bleached to natural blonde 5/9/2006

Janet has the patience of a Saint and the skill of an angel. She is very intuitive and can see past all the fake color. I had been coloring my hair for years with box products, trying to cover the grey. I was not even sure what color my hair was anymore. Janet brought me back down to a natural blonde. I am getting married in July and want to look young and refreashed and not orange and old. Thanks Janet! A real makeover 5/7/2006

I've just had the best hair experience ever! I went to my appointment at JR's Parlor on a friend's recommendation without any real expectation except a decent cut and color. I get my hair done regularly in New Jersey and had what I thought was a good cut with highlights, well, I was asked what I wanted and when I asked for Janet's opinion I wwas a bit hesitant to proceed because she suggested something kind of exreme. I just cannot tell you have thrilled I am with Janet's idea and her work! I look like a different and even younger woman-who knew cut and color could change your life. John is amazing! 5/6/2006

I had never been loyal to a hairdresser before. That's probably why my curly thick hair never really worked for me. I'd put it up and pray for no rain. I'm very lucky that I discovered John, because ever since I let him cut my hair I love it. It is always manageable and kinda fabulous...even in the worst humidity. In fact, I know it's time for another haircut only when I need more than 5 minutes to style it in the morning. I highly recommend John for curly thick and coarse hair like mine. Trust me, you'll thank yourself. more

I have never found hairstylist loyalty until now!! After having three friends emerge with amazing haircuts from her, I finally called myself to make an appointment. I had put a lot of thought into what I needed and wanted, and I really felt that Mary listened and then ran with it! I have never been so satisfied that a haircut both felt like ""me"" and yet had that something extra that made me feel fabulous! You can be sure I'll be going back. more

I'am not one to write reviews. But there is a first time for everything.I heard about John Gerard in a magazine article. I came in talked to John Gerard he listen to my concerns and new just what I wanted. As we talk he knew I was not happy with my colour so he recommended Loren for colour. I tell you I thought she was reading my mind she knew exactly what I wanted. I walk out of the salon with the best haircut and highlights. I feel like a Million Dollars. THE BEST -- NO KIDDING! 4/23/2006

I am a bestselling author (who has also written US, British Vogue, Town & Country) and the one thing that I don't skimp on is my hair. I have to say that Janet is, hands down, the best colorist in NYC. In fact, no one, no one, no one has touched my head (colorwise) but Janet since I was about 24 years old. I have been going to Janet since she was at John Dellaria a million years ago. I cannot speak highly enough of Janet's talent... she is also a calm and soothing person who does not talk too much when you are getting your hair done. If I could, I would give Janet TEN STARS! Jen Rocks my Socks!!! 4/21/2006

I got the best highlights and haircut form Jen!!! My highlights are natural, beautiful, perfect, blonde but not to blonde!!! I'd say i'm just as blonde as I wanted to be!!! Go see her!!! She is the best!!! Also, the entire staff was fun and friendly, not your normal salon people!!! Everyone was so cool to be around, I felt like I went over to a friends house for coffee and highlights!!! This is the place to go, and Jen is the girl to see!!! Go to Eddie for Matrix straightening, it's better than the Japanese method and he really knows what he's doing. My hair was great afterwards and the whole process it relatively painless. more

The only high end salon in NYC without attitude! 4/9/2006

I have been to some of the most famous salons in NYC, every one had a stylist/colorists who did exactly what THEY wanted to do to my hair. Not so at Janet Rufin's Parlor!! I visted Janet's for the first time with my hair color in complete disarray (compliments of one of the ""famous"" NYC salons!). Janet methodically and carefully analyzed my hair. She asked what look I hoped to achieve, and for the next 4 hours transformed my tattered locks into exactly what I wanted! The ENTIRE staff is absolutely incredible, and you will not find a more relaxing shampoo experience anywhere! I can now stop ""salon hopping"", my hair coloring needs have finally found a home!! No more bad hair days 4/7/2006

First time experience was great. Janet the Sr. Operator went over all the details about what needed to be done to correct a badly done job on my hair. I needed to be saved in a hurry.
