My best friend had her wedding reception at Il Mulino, and I have never seen anything like it! The classic decor made for the perfect romantic atmosphere. And on top of that, the food was outstanding. We had the lamb, and it was the most succulent lamb I?ve ever had. Everyone who worked there was so nice and accommodating. I highly recommend them!!! more

I've been to Il Mulino now three or four times. We have not had any problems with the food, nor the service. It is a more relaxed atmosphere, but they start you off with a lot of food immediately after being sat down so you don't starve while making food selections, etc. Their menu is HUGE, and there is a lot to look over. I've brought my parents here last time they came to visit-and my father is so in love with it, we had to go again two nights later. (he's very Italian from long island, and when he finds a restaurant he likes, he talks about it constantly...like an Italian would) At the end of your meal, you are served a complimentary shot of house infused grappa. I have had the opportunity to experience the Il Mulino in Chicago on many occasions. My boss is in love with the restaurant and has all of our business meetings in the private rooms of the 2nd floor. We have also had numerous dinners on the main floor of the restaurant. What one of the best things about Il Mulino is that you get the exact same (although somewhat lengthy) experience whether you are dining in the restaurant or in a private room. We went for dinner and had reservations - they took us right at 8:30 and gave us a great complimentary bruschetta which was truly the best we have ever eaten. The complimentary plate of salami and fried Zucchini was really good as well (the zucchini was a bit oilier than I'd prefer but very tasty). We got the wine menu very quickly but it took forever to get the food menu and order. I'm not sure if that's their style so that you do not feel pressured. When we finally did, we ordered a bottle of wine and shared an appetizer of fried Calamari which was very good. For dinner, my boyfriend ordered Fettucini Alfredo and I ordered the Canneloni. The Canneloni was ok - I've had better but the fettucini alfredo was terrible. The sauce was goopy and tasted like it came out of a bottle (actually the stuff out of a bottle is better than what we had). The noodles were cooked under al dente -- they were just plain hard. The waiter never came by during our meal to ask how everything was - which was surprising. Finally at the end of the meal, he did. We're not complainers but had to say something to the waiter as to why he didn't eat his food. They took his meal off and gave us complimentary dessert (the mascarpone cheesecake is truly wonderful) and their homemade limoncello (which was excellent). I have no idea if we just ordered the wrong thing but how can they screw up Fettucini Alfredo???? We're not sure if we""ll give this one another try or not. Went to Il Mulino in Chicago last week when I was visiting. I am from NY and have been to the Il Mulino in the Village so I wanted to try this one out. The food was as I expected - terrific, but the service was different. The uniforms were the same and the little stuff at the beginnig was the same, but the pace was different somehow. Less rushed, less hectic. The staff was not as polished as NY, but nicer to me. I guess its the Chicago influence. And what a building!! The decor was so dramatically different form NY. Heard a lot of things about this restaurant. When I was invited the other day I checked it out on line and the reviews were all over the place. Well, when we were there it was amaaazing!! I don't hink I've EVER had a dinner like that before. The stuff that they give you to start was great and the pasta we had was terrific. They even finish cooking it in the dining room for you right before you eat it. I read that the staff is rude, but they couldn't have been nicer to us. My chicken dish was terrific and my friends veal was really good too. We shared a dessert with a little bit of everything in it and by the end we were stuffed and happy. This place totally surprised me. I waited forever to be seated, but gosh was it worth. The complimentary bread and mushroom relish, was well as bruschetta was unbelievable. The ravioli....gave a new definition to ravioli! Every bite packed with such flavor, my eyes nearly watered. The ambience and waitstaff are extremely professional. You truly feel like you're in Italy, but even better. The meal was totally delectable. The meat....chicken and veal, outstanding. The after dinner drink, (also complimentary), very, very strong. I don't understand the comments about reservations being needed. Maybe that was before people actually started going there and found out what a disappointment it was. Huge surprise. Most reviews/comments were bad... and now I see why. They have struck out with this place in every aspect, and it's pretty frustrating. The service is bad. The food is OK, good Italian food, but it's not the best I have ever had. The place feels like a strange tourist trap; I've heard people equate it to a Disney World theme restaurant (fake accents, cheap table ornaments etc). Crowd stinks. Atmosphere stinks (Biggs was awesome, this place stinks) Food is OK. Prices are just stupid. You can go to any of the very amazing restaurants in the city on this budget, so why anybody would settle for this place is beyond me. The reviews were right - this is not the NYC Il Mulino. DISAPPOINTING! My wife and I visited Il Mulino Chicago last night. We were seated without delay. The waiters and table staff were generally pleasant. After sampling the table-tastings we ordered appetizers (seafood stuffed baked eggplant and buffalo mozzarela - both good). We then waited one hour and 20 minutes for our pasta course - which never arrived. Our waiter stopped by at one point, appeared mortified, and stated that ""he screamed at some people"" and that our food would be right out. It was ... but not our pasta course, out came the main course ... and only one of them. We decided to leave and spoke to the host as we departed. He was as disinterested in our experience as one could possibly be. Management and kitchen service require considerable improvement. more

I've had an amazing time in NYC Il Mulino and while I was on a business trip to chicago, I decided to try Chicago Il Mulino. From the get go: I didn't feel welcome by their Chicago staff. The bartender was rude (to be exact) and once we were seated (in the back room), it took awhile before wait staff noticed we were there. To say the least, the food was cold majority of times. When our entree was taken back due to coldness, it came back like it just came out of microwave(Brunt brunt!!) Nothing was taken care of. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND JUST GO TO NYC. I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND ANYONE TO CHICAGO IL MULINO. RUDE RUDE AND UNPLEASANT. more

I just ate here and was really looking forward to it. However, it did not hold up to my expectations. The food was really salty and way too much garlic was used. The service was for the most part good, but I was expecting a more elegant place. The prices reflect that it should be more elegant plus the location is very elegant, but it was so loud and overly crowded. I couldn't even hear the person talking next to me. They also rushed us through the meal b/c they seem to have overbooked the place. People were waiting in the halls and anywhere they could find a place. I hope it's just having issues b/c it's so new, but I won't be returning for awhile. more

Just had dinner at the new Il Mulino. I had been to the one in NY and it was great but this was really special. The setting is out of this world. The old Biggs was a blast from the past, but the place has been lightened and cleaned up. Low lights and fireplaces give great charm and the old world European flair is everywhere. The gratis stuff at the baginning of the meal is top notch and the pastas made to order were terrific as they are in NY. The service is old school and all over it. They really look out for you. We did have to wait for a bit before being seated, but that's the way it goes in a busy restaurant. It was worth the wait. It's true that you get what you pay for. I was elated when I heard Il Mulino was coming to Chicago, been to the NY location, this place is not the same. We waited for almost an hour, even with reservations. Very loud restaurant, waiters are yelling to bring the free brushetta and breads. The appetizers were average. We ordered pastas and both came cold, watery bolognese sauce. The gnocchi could have been good if they heated it. The entrees were very average: osso bucco was dry and too salty, lamb chops were good quality (but they should be at $60), veal parm was ok. The best part was dessert, fourless chocolate cake was fantastic. Overall, it was an average dining experience at a place that is asking very high prices for just ok food.
