Hughie & Louie's

This place is AWESOME!! I've been there many times over the years and go nowhere else when looking for costume bits or make-up. I'm a do-it-yourself costume person , most of the time starting at a consignment shop for clothes and ending at Hughie and Louie's for the rest! Louie is who I've delt with the most (although other employees are just as helpful) and she is never lacking in ideas or suggestions. Her knowledge of make up and it's uses have saved (made) my costumes on a number of occasions! There is always a loud greeting from someone (or everyone!) when i've gone in the store and even when the store is jam packed, have never waited very long for assistance when I needed it. I tell everyone I know who asks(or will listen!) that this is the FIRST stop for creative goods! For those who claim to have had a bad experience at this store, you MUST be thinking of some other place! Louie and friends, Keep up the good work! You're the BEST!!!! more

I'm a small theater arts teacher for a high school, and i need costumes all the time. let me tell you something, this place has EVERYTHING!!! and they are the most hilarious people ive ever met! I've been reading some of the reviews people have posted and thats some major bull... just gonna tell you right off the bat. they have all sales are final posted through out the WHOLE STORE!!! honestly, if your pissed off because of that, your an idiot. they even have it posted right in front of the cash register!!! for all you mindless scum bags complaining about it... picture that in your world.... lets say you run a coffee shop and someone buys a coffee takes a few sips then tries to return it... whats gonna happen? your gonna get pissed!!! They cant take costumes back for that reason, plus its kinda unsanitary. i wouldn't want a costume that someone else had! if you are a person with at least half a brain... you can go here.... otherwise, all you idiots can go elsewhere. this is a place for people of intelligence. plus id like to see you get service like this online or any where else... and another thing, most of the negative reviews are supporting another costume shop. i noticed that when i read a post commenting on something similar. really fishy if you ask me. more

It isn't even worth the star I had to put up here. We called three times to see if they had a Mickey Mouse costume and that it was available for rental. While I do understand that Disney has the only authentic ones, I am aware that there are unofficial copies available. The first two times we called, we were led to believe that they had one available. We were told that there was an older head and a tux. On our third call, the day before the party, we were told for the first time that the head DID NOT LOOK LIKE MICKEY MOUSE!!! Although they never confirmed that it looked like Mickey in the previous calls, they also did not deny that it looked like Mickey. Since they led us to believe that they had what we were looking for, we didn't pursue any other options and therefore there will be two very disappointed little girls. more

I love being able to jaunt over to this place whenever I'm low on body paint or need to pick up something quick. I usually ebay or amazon for mail order, but being able to go to a local store at the last minute to get a costuming item is a godsend. The woman who runs the place has always been helpful, and the store has good prices. They carry liquid latex and a decent variety of stage make up, which I hate paying shipping on anyway. more

I dabble in some independent film work in the Raleigh area, and when I need some prosthetics, blood, or liquid latex for a creature effect or something of the like, this store is a great place to have around. A comment was posted by a woman who has never purchased an item from the Hughie and Lughie?s or even been in the store, but called and asked to return an item she purchased from an out of state on-line company. Instead of returning it to the on-line retailer she wanted a local store to exchange the costume and she is mad that the store owner refused and hung up on her? Seriously? I was in the store at the time, and Louie had to take time away from customers to deal with this woman ? twice. Idiots should be hung up on!! Pros: They have everything for your dress up fun more

I called with a simple question, and the woman who answered the phone was so amazingly rude it blew my mind. I have never been spoken to in such a way when I didn't deserve it. I called again and even tried to apologize if she felt like my question 'offended her' which it could not POSSIBLY have. ( I wanted to exchange an unused item at her store even though I had purchased the item somewhere else out of state.) She insinuated that I was a child and basically an idiot for ever having asked such a dumb thing because heaven forbid you help out someone if they didn't help you first. She hung up on me TWICE! I hope her business fails miserably. Don't shop here. EVER. more

Louie?s booming voice greets each customer as they enter the store and her energetic personality makes shopping there a hilarious experience. (It makes one wonder if negative reviews are posted by the competition?) They have great rental costumes and don?t mind taking the time to help you put something together. They are also full of creative suggestions for those of us who are creatively challenged. The have a great selection of make-ups, wigs, accessories, and magic supplies. You can rent character costumes for parties too. They also carry costumes for purchase. Hughie & Louie?s is here all year unlike those shops that just set up for the holiday with cheap crappy costumes. Should you go? YES! Will you have a good time? YES! This shop had exactly what I needed, which I'd had some difficulty finding elsewhere, and the price was much less than similar items available online. Just wish they stayed open later! : ) more

I visited Hughie and Louies just about a week ago, just browsing around. I asked the sales lady for help, she was on the phone and after she got off the phone she never offered any assistance or help. I then made myself known by asking for help AGAIN and I felt that I was refused service. I would NEVER do business with a company that is going to ignore customers. Little did they know I needed to rent costumes for our show which was the Wizard of Oz (about 15 costumes total). If they read this hopefully it may help raise their level of customer service, although I highly doubt it. After leaving Hughie and Louie's feeling discouraged I turned to the internet for help and discovered Raleigh Creative Costumes which apparently was on Hillsborough Street for a number of years. I went there and soon found they were obviously out of business so I called their number from the internet and discovered the most totally awesome store in Raleigh called Fantasy Theatrical Supply which is on Western Blvd. They were definitely able to help me with all of our costumes for The Wizard of Oz. Not only were they able to help me but they acknowledged me with a great entrance and a fabulous store! I've never seen a costume shop this organized and facinating and my gosh, they have tons of merchandise! I wouldn't visit Hughie and Louie's again if you paid me a million dollars. This place is too much fun. I like their slogan...""If we don't got it, you don't need it."" Actually, I was surprised to find they had exactly what I needed. I've visited a number of costume, novelty and magic shops and nowhere have I received this level of service. And a plus...Louie is a bonafide madcap. She had customers dying from laughter. She knows her store and she had good ideas for me. You don't get that kind of service from seasonal costume shops or the mega stores. If you want cheap and tacky go somewhere else. If you want to get fixed up have fun doing it then try Hughie & Louie's. I also noted (ahead of time-because signs were plastered all over) that they make no refunds or exchanges - the customer makes that decision when they purchase goods there. I've seen this policy in other stores. I'm guessing Hughie & Louie's is a ""mom and pop"" shop. I suppose it makes no sense to give refunds after someone buys a costume, wears it to a party, then returns it the next day. Hey, they rent costumes, too. My friend got a kick out the sign by the dressing room...""Yo momma don't work here so pick up after yourself."" I've only been in there once before and, it was 2 days before Halloween. It was a crazy, clausterphobic (sp) madhouse inside and out. I asked a few questions and even though the girl was REALLY busy she still took the time out to help me which I was really surprised at considering Im not the most patient person. There were a few people in there that were getting on MY nerves by getting in the middle of my time with the sales girl. THEY were the ones actually being rude.
