unacceptable ER Waiting time 12/28/2011

severe bright red Vaginal bleeding, cramps, pain, nausea, weakness, cough,Chestpain! not seen by md for 12 + hours ? Poor care! Where are the doctors ? ER policies and procedures need to be followed a.d/ or updated! If unable to handle, patients should be rerouted to near by hospital who can see patient faster.Quality vs. Quantity! more

ER visit 12/22/2011

I waited from 3:00 pm until 9:00 am the following day to see a doctor because ER had no rooms upstairs for admitted ER patients. So the rest of us had to wait until they were able to place them. LBJ ER is inefficient and unorganized. The state of Texas and the gold card is a joke. I'm just lucky that I wasn't in pain like some of the others. Well at least the doctors and nurses were efficent and friendly. I expected nothing less after the wait. more

*UPDATE* ER improvements! 12/3/2011

I thought i would never go to the ER again. Not so lucky :( #1 To my surprise they have redone the whole ER!.More distractions when in pain :) Good job on the cleaning crew also. #2 The GOLD CARD system is also making improvements. We are also paying customers!I #3 Didn't stay in the ER long, thank goodness (in the hallway the whole time). From what i can tell the staff is more polite. #4 Would like 2 give 5 stars but I can clearly see they need more doctors! The whole point for me is to get well.I can't do that without knowing why I keep getting sick.(maybe they need more specialty staff). #5 It is very important all staff needs to always remember is ***don't blame the patient.!!*** Discharge instructions should be something more than what the patient had when admitted. Even if it is ideas for the PCP? more

gold card discrimination? 9/11/2011

My doctor told me to go to ER after blood test results repeatedly shows elevated levels. I have been having deteriation of all health since 2009 and the LBJ ER staff was abusive. They refused to allow my husband to stay and so i had no advocate. My nurse was talking bad about me in hearing distance, sarcastic attending, refused care or even water when i spoke up! I did hear a few other patients being talked down to also...... More damage done than when i came in!!! I would rather have good healthcare and bedside manner than best facility but both are deplorable. Once admitted overnight it was NOT better. They had flushed my electrolytes further and i tried to sleep and had trouble breathing all night. The patient next to me had family that tried to tell the nurse about my night and again they DONT LISTEN!!! Nothing was logged when I discharged,my husband took me home the next morning. I try to study and figure how to treat my self at home.(my college books are a little helpful) This has been very difficult because i think i have an infection in gallbladder or that area based on test results. Might need surgery but you could guess i never want to go to the ER again. .........I had 2 quit my job because of health and thank God my husband has a job. I still have to pay "deductibles" like its insurance but get no healthcare. more

Absolutely the worst hospital emergency facilities I have ever experienced 5/18/2011

My experience was like a nighmare or a very bad joke, My emergency was high-blood pressure related and had to wait from 10:30 pm to 8:30 am the next morning to be seen. Although my mistreatment during this time was bad, I witnessed much worse treatment of others, such as the 20 year old who sat for many hours holding her injured arm up in an awkward angle (broken?) while she cried with pain and the nurse's station ignored her. Or the woman who came in with a severely chronic cough who was given a mask as asked to wait (also for hours) in a standing room only waiting area. At 59 years old, after having lived in six states and experienced many medical venues, this was by far the worst I have ever seen. No accountability for anyone? more

NotTerrible! 4/20/2011

I went to the er after being mistreated at another hospital. Not much of a wait considering the er was totally packed. I was admitted after 6 hours andhad some great nurses. I will be back in two weeks for surgery and I am not completely terrified. more

The Best 6/14/2010

Good: Once I arrived with my husband at the ER on Sunday at 1:45pm , with abdomen pain we were sent to the pediatrics because we are both still 21. Hw was taken care of immediatly by 11:34pm he was done with surgery! Everything was fast, the nurses payed very good attention and the doctor was very nice and informed our family of the risks and the care after the surgery.. more

Emergency Room 3/1/2010

Good: Nothing, they is no privacy, the techs and nurses were talking about me in the hall and the entire ER could here the conversation---- I was so humiliated. My name was displayed on a plasma TV screen with my medical problem! Outrageous, absolutely outrageous.. Bad: Everything, there is no respect for the patients, and the nurses speak in a condescending manner to everyone even the doctors!. Improvements: It would be nice to not be placed in a bed touching another patients bed. And there was only one rest room for all of us in the emergency room. If I was not in so much pain I would have escaped. I hate LBJ ER! How can anyone allow such a hospital to operate! There must have been 30 or more people in one room with one bathroom and everyone was ill, including myself. I have never had such bad luck.. Other: The place is dirty, filthy, it smells horrible, there is no excuse for this, the only way for this type of situation to occur is for a gross long standing disregard for basic maintenance of the facility. No one cares in that hospital.. more

not patient friendly 11/18/2009

Good: nothing, the doctors do not listen to you.. Bad: my experience with the harris county hospital district was terible. When I lost my job I applied for a gold card. I have numerous medical problems. Its been over a year i reported my problems and I'm still no better off when I first reported them. I even called the patient liason for help, Damiris Rodriguez. I left her several messages to call me, to this day i have not been contacted. I'm 56 years old and I'm in pain and still suffering and no one at the Harris County hospital district cares less.. Improvements: the doctors should listen to the patient. Other: I'm so mad. I will take this further. I just want to get well and feel better. My name is Everett Taylor. more

If You're Gonna Die Here Wait 'Til After Shift-Change... 9/7/2009

Was driving through town and began feeling bad, to the point of almost passing out. I called 911 and an ambulance brought me in because I was feeling extremely jittery, my blood pressure was 210/108, and LBJ was nearby. To be blunt, the staff in the ER admissions area sucks. Now I'm sure they deal with whiney idiots all day long, but if they want to be thought of as professionals they should be able to keep their prejudices to themselves or find another line of work. Once I got in the back the difference was like night and day. Everyone was friendly and seemed genuinely interested in finding out what was wrong with me. My hat's off to the folks in the back, but some of the High and Mighty pencil-pushers up front may want to re-think their career choice. more

Outstanding Service to Public 7/20/2009

Good: The lbj er staff and nurses are some of the best in the city. The service, price, quality, and competence are some of the best the city has to offer.. Bad: the wait time in the ec.. Improvements: I would like to see more staff and beds. Other: Overall its a blessing to have a hospital that is there for those who aren't able to afford medical healthcare. Affordable healthcare is a growing problem nationwide. more

Discrimaination at LBJ 5/28/2009

I will never go to LBJ for treatment. If u are a white patient and have had to go to LBJ for treatment etc., u have probably been discriminated against. The Afro american, japanese, spanish, and vietnamiese nurses don't like to take care of white patients. you are ignored and if the doctor has left orders for your care you probably never got them. If you have had surgery(12 hrs) of facial , you probably had to ask for your pain medication and help to use the bathroom. After 5 days of being in that hospital the 1st time i was never offered a sponge bath and my bed sheets were never changed. and i waited until the next day for my dr to give me my pain medication. This is really very sad. In the last 2 months i have had to go to LBJ for 4 surgeries. In all the 4 times i been there my nurses treated me like i had the plague. But the room i was in Had 3 other ladies in there with me, 2 afro american ladies and 1 spanish lady all of whom was checked on and taken very good care of. Not one time did my nurse come in and come to bed unless i called for her. So after 12 hrs of facial surgery the next morning when my dr, got there i requested to go home. This is now my 4th time there and i sleep one night there and the next morning i go home. Why cause the nurses there most of them don't know there job and have treated me like i was not there. My Doctors were wonderful as was my cnas. There is alot of discrimination at LBJ. When u park all are suppose to pay $3.00. Not according to the security guard on 5-27, 2009. I had to pay and no one else had to pay cause i watched . i parked my car and watched her from a distance. When my husband got outta the car ask her why she told him don't you start no trouble here , and i knew what she meant but he didn't. And you guessed it we were the only white people in line that had to pay. no one else pd.!! She also told he better listen to his wife . more

Extemley Terrible 2/17/2009

Wanted: Medical Care 8/19/2005

My grandma has been a frequent patient here and the doctors have taken good care of her. Thanks to their expertise, she is on the road to recovery from assorted ailments. The doctors are efficient and cordial, the nurses are attentive and accomodating, and hey... the cafeteria food ain't half bad either. The next time a loved one is ill, consider taking them to LBJ Hospital; you'll be in good hands. more
