Giorgione

As someone who has been in Manhattan for the past 12 years, I can say I have eaten at some of the best NYC restaurants and, on a rare occasion, some of the worst. Giorgione is one of the worst I have been to in a while. Poor service, really mediocre food (if you read a few reviews here you will see that others agree) and indifferent management. There are so many better restaurants in this neighborhood - do not waste your time or money on this one. more

An oyster bar glistening with chunks of ice and delicately placed crustaceans-nestled closely next to vibrant lemons, a glimmering metallic bar that snakes along the west wall of this charming Italian eatery, a gentle old man sipping his Pinot Grigio, the sun shining through the open doors that- thankfully beautify the ugly combustion of traffic and slobbering drunks spilling out on to the street-all from the hedonistic pub across the street. Giorgione is quiet, relaxed and simply laden with white brick walls, iron rimmed and wood shelves that line the walls, sweeping the dining room through a split level space-soft grey tones, a bar crowd bustling with anticipated diners awaits. \r \r Giorgione’s wait staff are attractive and cordial, but with an obvious professionalism about them, almost robotic, in routine. Owner Giorgio Deluca is hands on, and demands perfection. “He’s here every day checking on the place”, says one nervous employee. The menu reflects its owners healthy obsession for fresh inviting ingredients; like the featured Duck Ragu pasta-ominous, earthy-and the fava bean salad-crisp and garden fresh. The grilled octopus appetizer is fire grilled and boldly exciting, yet feels like a day at the sea-calming.\r \r Nearby a gruff, yet precise woman with a lonely face, orders the Bianca Primavera Pizza. I keenly watch her mood change into a giddy, child-like happiness, as she devours this wafer thin pie of fresh tomato, arugula and ribbons of shaved Parmesan. Chef Aldo Monosi displays his obvious culinary talents with a broad menu, highlights consisting of Carciofi alla giudea (fried artichokes) $12; Fritto Misto (crispy shrimp and calamari with lemon and sea salt) $14; Polpettine alla Siciliana (Beef & Pork Meatballs, Golden Raisins & Pine Nuts.)$22; Mezzi Rigatoni con “Guazzetto” d’Anatra (Slow-Cooked Duck Sauce, Bitter Greens, Fresh Pecorino)$19;.Milanese di Vitello (Breaded Veal Chop, Frisee, Radish and Lemon Vinaigrette) $34.\r \r According to Deluca, “Giorgione was created to provide a simple restorative or casual celebratory dining experience for the locals, including myself.” It’s safe to say that this, approaching 10 year old restaurant, has successfully achieved that.\r Pros: pizza Cons: neighborhood is a shame more

This is my favorite resturant in the city. The olive oil itself is a reason to visit this establishment. The food is outstanding. Everything is fresh and it has a little of everything to please all. My favorite is the grilled polipetti. Its the perfect compliment to one of the many fine wines, and its served over grilled cherry tomatoes, olives, and celery. It comes with a nice hunk of brickoven bread and extra olive oil on the side. As far as price I feel its very reasonable. Some places in the city are noted for pizza and the pizza here is simple and fresh with a nice crust thats not too thick. Give it a try, you will not be dissapointed. I have never written a review before but felt I had to after what was the worst restaurant experience I've had after living in NYC for 11 years. We ordered a bottle of wine and they brought us the wrong year - when we pointed this out they admitted they already knew this but didn't acknowledge this was a problem. The fish I ordered had bones in every bite and my date's food was ice cold. Incredibly overpriced for the quality along with pretentious clientele. I can't say enough about how bad it was. Used to enjoy this restaurant regularly but this is the second time found the food just mediocre. So many wonderful Italians in this part of town that have to pass and wont be back. more

We went to Giorgione last week and had a wonderful dinner. The food was delicious and not over salted as it is in many restaurants today. Everything was so fresh and delicious and the raw bar even had Malepeques which are my favorites from Prince Edward Island. The pizza was thin crust and actually had great flavor to it along with the fresh mozzarella and perfect sauce. Even dessert was fantastic I had a Chocolate Torte made with Jack Daniel's which was amazing. Pros: Attentive staff, great food Cons: Slighty long wait to be seated but worth it. love love love Giorgione. My husband and I have been going there many many years. We always have a great time! The food is always on point. The atmosphere is always fun. The staff is always smart, funny and extremely attractive. The wine list is very well thought out and not pretentious at all. If you are lucky enough, one night you may even experience Giorgio Deluca playing his favorite opera extremely loud for a moment. It is very entertaining and real. love it and hope you do to. more

we visit giorgione about every month or so, so maybe thats why we don't seem to share the same complaint other reviewers wrote re: reservations. we've never had a problem getting seated promptly.\r \r favorites continue to be the pizzas, the grilled octopus, the simple green salad and the pasta specials. \r \r a very good wine list and good service round out the experience every time.\r \r the only note of caution: sitting in the back of the restaurant is insanely loud. We went for 9:00 reservation and weren't seated until 10. As previous review mentioned, reservations seem to be pointless -- even when they call you to confirm -- confirm that they WON'T have your table. When seated, we finally got the waitress to take our order after 20 minutes. Octopus arrived tasting like charcoal - terrible. Entrees were mediocre, with the exception of pizzas. Ordered a third bottle of wine, that didn't arrive until after our meals were done. We had to ask the bus boys to clear our app plates, for our waitress and for the check. After taking a 30 minute cab ride to the middle of nowhere, one would think that this restaurant would have your table waiting, if you made a reservation. Well that is just no true. They clearly overbook, so in essence they drag you down there thinking they will honor your reservation, but in fact the reservation is meaningless. It seems that our party and several others were all waiting for at least an hour for their tables too. They probably do the same drill every week. After an hour we left, and I would never come back again. 1 our is just too much to wait especially in NYC with thousand of other resturants that have good service! more

Complementing great wine, unpretentious yet attentive service, nice ambiance and generally wonderful, fresh-tasting food, we savored an amazing octopus. We have travelled the world eating at top restaurants, even travelling to the world capital of octopus, Gytheon, Greece. However, we have never had better than the tender, char-grilled octopus at Giorgione. Its only been a few weeks since, but we're thinking of going back tomorrow! more

I've dined here for lunch with clients numerous times, and it has never disappointed. While I'm not partial to precious-sized pizzas, theirs make a perfect appetizer for a small group. Very tasty. It's the risotto that keeps me coming back, although my friends tell me other dishes are very good, as well. Desserts? Divine. And with a very good cup of coffee, you'll trip out of there feeling like something special. Pros: the back seating area, great service, memorable meals Cons: noisy sometimes more

Had a surprised birthday dinner here for a friend and it was great from the get go. Great wine list and the seafood platter was superb. The thin crust pizzas were also fantastic. Definately everyone had a good time and will be a return customer! more

One of the best meals ever. The restaurant is cool but has the warm feel of a neighborhood restuarant. The waitstaff could not have been more friendly. Listen to their reccomendations! The food is TO DIE FOR! The raw bar selection combination was great! Nice presenttation of raw oysters,clams,and crab. Beautiful and delicious. Now, they encouraged me to have the octopus appetizer with olive oil and lemon. I was wary. I never eat octopus. But, It is NOT to be missed. It was tender not chewy and tasty as anything i've ever had. Still dreaming about it. And, the pizzas! Incredible thin crust pizzas. Had the 4 cheese and it was amazing. Also, for entree dont miss the meatballs. Served alone in red sauce and are the tastiest meatballs i've ever had. The desserts are great and order the espresso coffee with scoop of vailla ice cream. Went to this restaurant to have a Holiday dinner. We were a group of 15. We were greeted promply upon arrival. We hanged out at the bar and drank a delicious red wine which the bartender recommended (He said it was from his home town). Then we sat at the table and had margarita pizza which I thought was average. Nothing out of the ordinary. The green salad was good and I enjoyed the bread but which it was warm. On the night of election tuesday, I decided to distract myself by going out to dinner with my partner. I had read earlier that Giorgio Armani had recomended ""Girgione"" because of it's true italian food, so we gave it a try. We were greatly disapointed. The food was good, and that was all. We sat next to a fireplace that had no fire. Our waiter stayed at the bar all night and ignored us. He was very audibly having a better time than we were! We felt bad to interupt him for a drink. Step one foot in this restaurant and you'll be glad you decided to trek all the way down to Tribeca. The sheer smell of a wood burning stove in the front of the restaurant was enough to put a smile on my face, but the night only got better. Service was attentive and curteous, decor was simple but chic (without trying to be), and the food was near perfect. Take it from an Italian -- THIS food is worth it. Great wine selection. I recommend the pasta with duck and chestnut sauce, and the pumpkin risotto, as well as the pizzas -- you will not be disappointed. One downside: a bit noisy if you have more than 4 people in your party. Mr. DeLuca sure knows what he's doing - this restaurant is a gem. One of the most beautiful restaurants in the city! Great atmosphere, makes you never wanna leave! The food is fantastic, and the waitstaff and management dedicated and entertaining.
