We arrived at Gavroche at 5 PM, which is when it opens for dinner, in order to enjoy a quiet and leisurely meal in their garden. No other patrons were present, and the owner even had to open the garden to let us in. Still, she asked us rather stiffly if we had a reservation. We were rushed through our prix-fixe dinner (the appetizer arrived before our wine), and at precisely 6:30 the owner approached us---without so much as an ?excuse me? for interrupting our conversation---to ask if we want tea or coffee. We duly repeated ?not yet,? as a waitress had already asked us the same question only minutes earlier. The owner remained dissatisfied with our answer, commanding us to order ?now. I need this table by seven,? proclaiming that all her customers know when tables are needed. We were genuinely bewildered as there were plenty of empty tables around us; so, feeling most unwelcomed, one of us asked her ?What is wrong with you? Why are you here?? to which she deliberately yelled and accused us of bigotry for all to hear. She later brought the check over, accompanied by a ?thank you,? but no apology. It did not occur to us to leave the restaurant without paying the bill on account of the owner?s mistreatment; after all, we had already eaten the food, which was fine, and the waitstaff was friendly and helpful. It is important to point out that the owner could have easily prevented the unpleasantry if she had made her conditions clear from the getgo; the customer can then freely decide whether or not to stay or go someplace else instead. Honesty is the best policy. As it is, we can only conclude that the owner was eager to make money, which she succeeded in doing---without, however, taking the proper care to earn it in a correct fashion. Her atrocious attitude, the tone she took to address us---all point to her determination to get rid of us as soon as possible; for whatever reason, we were simply not wanted there.
