Worst

The meat was cooked wrong for half the group and the waiter was well done. Tougher than a bow legged steer. My steak was cooked ok but my attitude sucked after our group dealt wit...

EXCELLENT MEAL! 1/3/2011

We went to Gallagher's on a recommendation from a friend. I loved the NY Steakhouse decor. We had an excellent, friendly waiter who was very accommodating. The steaks were cooked perfectly and the sides were delicious. No room for dessert, but will try next time as I'll definitely go back more

Not Great 12/27/2010

My family had a great time at Gallaghers despite the varied food and rude and incompetent wait staff. Even the soda was bad, the coke had a very strange taste. The fried calamari was terrible and tasted like something one might eat while drunk at a roadside diner. The steaks were not bad, although they had really didn't get the temperatures right, which should be pretty standard for a steakhouse. The burgers were also good although once again my mother's medium rare burger was well done. The crabcakes were what sealed the deal and made me want to even write this review. Not Good! Should not even be on the menu. The sliced steak sandwitches were bad as well. We went to Keen's last year and it was much better. more

Very bad!!! 11/11/2010

Well being from NYC and eating out often, this place has gone down in food and service ( which wasn't great to begin with not consistant). As I have come here over 20 years on and off with clients and family for a good steak I won't come here anymore. Over the recent visits for business over the last few years Gallaghers has lost its quality of steak and below average service. I can understand why this place is empty. more

impressed 11/11/2010

So, I dropped in on this place with my nephew before a Social Distortion concert on Nov 4th. Needles to say I was dressed sloppily and disheveled, it was a punk concert for crying out loud. As I walked in with Jr I looked around and thought we would be bounced based on our appearance. more

Poor Service in the City 10/21/2010

Last weekend I was treated to a big apple surprise... a trip to NYC, my first! My boyfriend was the ultimate tour guide; Central Park, the Guggenheim, the Plaza, and two trips to the theater. As a thank you, I decided to treat him to a special dinner on our last night. My mistake was choosing Gallagher's. Our meal included cold lobster bisque, a limp salad, mediocre mushrooms, and overcooked steak. That being said, the mundane meal was the star of the Gallagher's experience. The service was indifferent to the needs of its patrons. The waiter provided limited knowledge of the menu and offered poor recommendations. The back waiter failed to deliver hot food or cold beverages, but did charge us for a drink we never ordered. I observed the same waiter coaching foreign guests re: tipping in America. Sadly, that was the only time, I saw him hustle all night! He attempted to coach me as well... Well, complaints were made...and obviously there is a trickle down effect from regional management. Apparently, Gallagher's waiters are Union, and the restaurant chain can't afford to fire substandard staff. The most expensive meal of an otherwise amazing trip was the unanimous low point. Consider Gallagher's the Great White STAY AWAY!!! more

Stay Away!!! Spend your money somewhere else! 10/17/2010

Went there after the theater. After ordering our waiter was scarce. When the food arrived the medium Rare steak was overcooked. I didn't have a chance to send the steak back...The waiter and back waiter never came back to our table. more

Perfect steakhouse for midtown 8/16/2010

I like my steak juicy, tender and somewhat bloody. I ordered a medium steak and it was cooled to perfection, came already cut and the mashed potato and broccoli sides were delicious. We topped it with a fresh Bordeaux and it was a truly memorable dining experience. Impeccable service. more

Excellent Dining Experience 4/15/2010

My co-workers and I decided to check out Gallagher's during a business trip to NYC. I had the Ribeye which was gigantic and had an incredible taste. The portions at this place are large and leave you satisfied, yet wanting to come back for more. My co-workers had the filet mignon and salmon that looked and according to them WAS great. The environment is laid back and easy-going. Will be returning to NYC this summer with my family and Gallagher's will definitely be on our list of places to visit. Pros: Food, Service, Environment Cons: None so far more

You can't turn down a steak from Gallagher's 2/11/2010

Gallagher's is my hotspot when it comes to getting a great steak. I've lived in NYC for 25 years and my best steak was at Gallagher's. Their dinner menu is great. If you're a meat and potatoes guy, like myself, you will fall in love with their food instantly. In addition, I love their power lunch menu. For $28, you get a nicely portioned appetizer, entree, and dessert, all of which are delicious and full of flavor. I have recommended Gallagher's to my friends, parents, and even my boss. They have all come back raving about the quality of the food. I envision my dining experience at Gallagher's to continue improving as the years progress. Pros: Great tender steaks, great decor Cons: Parking car is a pain (if you drive) more

Would Definitely Go Back Again 12/14/2009

We all had very good meals, steaks and sides. Service was attentive. Great Theatre District Location Pros: Food, Location more

Excellent Meal 11/11/2009

Gallagher's is an excellent choice for a steakhouse in Manhattan. Steaks cooked perfectly and classic side dishes to accompany them. Good desserts too. Always a good choice going to Gallagher's Pros: Steaks & sides more

Horrible 11/4/2009

Worst restaurant I've visited 10/19/2009

Maitre's was rude, waiter was rude not friendly at all , we had to ask for bread and water because it was not offer to us. Not toppings were offered for baked potatoe we had, and on top of all this the waiter impose a 20% tip on our bill, like he had done a good job with our business. Cons: Lousy Service more

Disgusting! Do not go. 8/10/2009

This place is horrible!!!! My girlfriend and I stopped in for lunch before a show yesterday and encountered one of the worst restaurant experiences we have ever had. The interior of the restaurant is decrepit by design and the slabs of beef at the entrance are an acquired taste to say the least. The bloody mary I ordered tasted like battery acid and the filet mignon that my girlfriend ordered and the burger I ordered (both medium) were burned very well on the outside and gushing cherry red on the inside. To make things extra special the elderly waiter as he delivered the food said "" this is a very nice lunch for her (pointing to my girlfirend) but too bad you had to get the cheapest thing on the menu....."" Since the old indian waiter spoke horrible english and I could tell he wasn't trying to be mean but making a very bad joke, I asked kindly for the manager to explain my dissatisfaction with his employees' comment. The manager was extremely apologetic but didn't seem surprised and was resigned to accept his employees incompetence / rudeness. Gallagher's steak house is disgusting. Do not go!!! Do not go!!! Pros: Horrible! Cons: Service, Food more

A LOUSY PLACE FOR OUR ANNIVERSARY DINNER 6/9/2009

What a major disappointment!! I wasted a hundred bucks. It was our 44th anniversary, dinner followed by ""Billy Elliott."" When I made reservations, I said it was our anniversary. It went ignored. I'll never go back to Gallaghers again. We were barely greeted by a maitre'd, who acted as though we were bothering him. No smile. Tried to seat us in the bar. We said, no, the back room, which was almost empty. He seemed offended. My steak was small, tough. The service was lousy. The maitre'd should be working as a bouncer at a dance club. The steaks were laughable. Stay away from this place. Fast food is preferable. Gallagher's is living off its name. By the way, ""Billy Elliott"" was terrific. Pros: Wonderful old photos, theatre memorabilia Cons: Greeting, service, food. more

Not worth the time or money 5/28/2009

Went to celebrate my birthday, wanted a steak and this place was highly recommended, never again. I saw the waiter once, when he took the order, never came back, someone else delivered our food, if you want to call it that. He actually threw if on the table on his way by. Of course he got two of the orders mixed up but since he didn't stop we couldn't tell him. Had to go looking for someone when we needed drink refills and the bill. Maybe the worst part of the evening was the food, they have this amazing meat locker near the front door and a big wood fired pit to cook these great pieces of meat but they ruined them. Two of the steaks were burnt on the outside, crispy, but not even warm on the inside. The one that was supposed to be medium well was bloody but at least warm. Since no one ever thought to ask us how our meal was nothing was done to fix it. We paid the bill and left with most of the food still sitting on the plates and still no one asked. I know this is New York but this was ridicules. Pros: Nice looking meat in the window Cons: Worst service ever more

Excellent Meal 3/8/2009

I come to NY fairly often, and one of the places I enjoy eating at the most is Gallaghers. If you want a good meal, and and even better steak, come here, you won't go wrong. Pros: Not enough room Cons: You mean there might have been some? I doubt it. more

Only a tasteless hack wouldnt like this restaurant 12/15/2008

Pros: steak, martinis, service Cons: you get what you pay for more

AWESOME! 12/12/2008

Just what I like: Big juicy steaks, very tasty sides, served in a comfortable, relaxed dining room by a very knowledgable waitstaff. Yes, there are many NYC steakhouse but Gallagher's is always a favorite. Pros: Steaks, Sides, Atmosphere more

  • Gallagher's opened its doors in 1927, a speakeasy with a secret password and a clientele list that read like a Who's Who of Broadway. 75 years later, Gallagher's has set the standard for the real New York City steakhouse. USDA prime beef, dry aged in their own meat locker and grilled to perfection over hickory logs. For a real NYC steak house experience - there's nothing quite like Gallagher's.
