Editorial review from Citysearch 8/28/2012

My second experience was with Freds today, The first was a few days ago over the phone. I had questions regarding hooking up a subwoofer to a much older amp. The guy was as patient and helpful as anyone could be. I am someone who is not so knowledgable about alot of this. He suggested a couple of things so I decided as helpful as he was I would drive from Aloha to get whatever I needed to get my project done.\r When I walked in I was afraid that I would be grunted at and receive no help at all. However when I walked up to what seemed like the middle counter. I was greeted by a very friendly man that was more than willing too help. He went out of his way to help educate me. Did he talk over my head, Yes a few times. Was he willing to explain when I needed it, Yes again. I walked out of that store spending under $20.00 and expected to have spent much more and got done what needed to be done.\r Freds som is out of the way for me but this experience will keep me returning unti more

Best in the Business 12/4/2011

I was first introduced to the little gem known as Fred's Sound of Music four years ago when my audiophile husband wanted to upgrade our sound system. I had never been much of a music snob and was always pretty satisfied with my basic Sony stereo so I wasn't expecting much when we walked in. I was in for a treat. We were introduced to Brad, an incredibly knowledgeable and easy going guy. He was very patient with us and accommodating. Over the past four years we have also had the pleasure of meeting Will, whose technical knowledge is truly impressive. Each time we have gone back we have been impressed with the level of professionalism and knowledge of the staff. The shopping experience at Fred's Sound of Music equally matches the quality of the products they carry. more

Portland's Best for Audiophiles 8/1/2010

I was very impressed with these guys almost immediately. Their inventory is extensive and their prices are certainly reasonable. But what elevates them above and beyond the competition is the service and level of expertise which they provide. Excellent customer service and technical competence. I highly recommend them to anyone serious about high end audio gear. Pros: staff, inventory more

Expert, professional and friendly help 6/3/2010

On my search for a good amp and cd player a staffer at a competitor who couldn't help me referred me to Fred's. They listened to my needs, including my budget, provided outstanding insight without pressure. I bought a new NAD amp and CD player, hooked it up and I've got to say I'm hearing details from my system that I never heard from my old system. It's not hype. They really know sound and are very helpful. In contrast the clerks at BBuy and Standard only want to sell plastic crap that produces more heat than sound. I've never been to Fred's before but will never go elsewhere for good audio advice and equipment. Pros: They know their stuff, listen, and don't sell you up Cons: Web site doesn't do it justice more

I love this store! 11/17/2009

Whenever I want quality home sound equipment that's better than your average gear, I always find items of interest at this store. Pros: Great Selection of High-end home sound systems more

Had a coney and then stopped by Freds sound of music 6/5/2009

Wanting to replace my stereo and start to build a good quality home theater I stopped by Freds sound of music. However, I had to have a coney at Nicks before going into Freds. I don't know how many times I've been to Nicks coney island and I never stopped in at Freds. Freds gave me a fair price for my old stereo as a trade in towards the new home theater and with help from freds I picked out the best gear for my budget. Ended up with a amp, blueray dvd player, all the speakers and decided on in ceiling speakers for the rear, worked out great. They were very busy but still took the time to go over everything I needed to know to make a decision. I guess the main reason Im writing you is that I have read the bad reviews and took it on my own to experience the best that a store like freds offers. I even decided to take advantage of their free financing and buy a 55 inch TV they had on sale. They installed all my equipment in a timely manner at a good price, they have the only good service department in town that I know of with real techs! and my God, they have been in business since what ... 1948! before stereo! Go to nicks for your lunch and then stop by Freds, ok? Pros: A variety of equipment to listen to, willing to take time more

The only store that has a service department 12/4/2008

This store is the only one with a service department that actually services electronics. If you have a problem with whatever you buy from them, they will take care of it. more

Avoid this Store - Used Car Salesmen 4/26/2008

I have a nightmare story I would like to tell in great detail but cannot because I have not found an alternative to their repair shop (yet - I'm looking). When I do, I'll edit this review and give you all the gory particulars, with quotes. In the interim, I will confine my remarks to say that I was treated so rudely by one salesman (who I wish City Search would allow me to identify) that I actually deliberately paid an extra $400 (on a $5,000 purchase) to buy the same equipment elsewhere. In response to me quoting a lower price at another store, the salesman was unabashedly rude, arrogant and condescending to the point of disbelief. I would even say angry. If you can avoid this place, do so. Cons: Aggressive sales staff, arrogant, rude more

One of my favorites 4/16/2008

Fred's is one of my favorite stereo shops around town. I've been doing business with them since I moved to Portland a few years ago, and have enjoyed good service since (I have to say, I am suprised by some of the other reviews here). I really like their selection of turntable oriented gear, and their used section usually offers something interesting. They also have a good repair center. I've had some of my older gear (Marantz, etc) repaired and looking like new.\r more

Enter at your own risk 4/3/2008

I've gone to this store about 6 times. Every time I go back, I'm hoping that the previous lousy experience was just a fluke. Every time I'm proven wrong. The staff is consistently cold, snobbish, and they seem to be quietly assessing your wallet. One kid acted as though I was a complete idiot when I asked a simple, reasonable question. Of course, I later found out that the answer he gave me was wrong. Generally speaking, there doesn't seem to be any interest in really helping a person who walks through the door. There was one nice guy there once who was a technician, but he soon got distracted with something else. more

Very wide selection of high end audio and video equipment 2/25/2008

Fred's definitely has the most thorough selection of high end audio equipment in Portland, and far and away the greatest selection of used and serviced high end audio equipment in the area if you're on a budget. I did have a dispute regarding a billing question but the manager courteously resolved it beyond my expectations. Pros: wide selection Cons: parking, but apparently they have a lot in back of which I was never aware. more

Small town store with lots of knowledge inside 1/10/2007

I shopped around for a home theater system and settled on Freds Sound because of the quality of products they handle and the knowledgable sales staff. Parking behind the store helped. After I loading my car with my new theater and ran out of room, they delivered the rest at no charge and helped me set it up and didn't charge me. Later that week I decided to have their install people come out to my home and run wires to the back of my room and out to my deck. Very courteous and professional installation. Small store and locally owned, that is what I was looking for. BY the way, I read the other reviews and all I can say is that my brother in law recommended this place and I have two other buddies who also had good service. Pros: Parking behind store, knowledgable, in store service center, and they do have lots of gear! Cons: the store could use an update but it's Hawthorne! more

Not Happy with Fred's Either 12/13/2005

Needed ideas on how to update my in-ceiling audio system. I followed their suggestion of having their tech provide in-home consultation & quote. The quote he provided was 2 1/2 times more than my budget, but I was happy it was done quickly & in writing. When I told him that it was much more than I had in mind & were there any lower cost alternatives, he told me he was very busy but would try to get back to me. Haven't seen it yet. I purchased & installed 2 items he recommended. The speakers sound terrible! So now I have to deal with them again. They have taken what should have been a simple fix & dragged it on for 8 weeks! I have lost all confidence in their willingness to solve this problem. Good customer service isn't something FSM fully practices. Pros: Knowledgeable, Small Store Cons: Expensive, Expensive, Junky Showroom more

not happy with Fred's 9/18/2005

I took in an older amp and asked if it could be repaired. They said yes. I called to find out how things were going and they said that they could not find a contact for the amp (it was a Carver). I searched the web for about 2 minutes and found the contact. Blah, blah, I kept calling (every other week) and a year later I get a call saying that if I didn't come in and get my amp it was going to be sold (dispite the fact that I had been calling!). It wasn't fixed and they wanted a minimum fee to get my amp back, or I could apply the fee to a new amp (and not get my amp back) rip off. Very unhappy. Cons: bad service, bad repairs, rude more

Extremely Dissatisfied 11/28/2004

After describing our needs for a CD Jukebox in detail to the sales person we were sold a Sony DVP-CX777ES 400 disc changer for $799. First unit was defective, they begrudgingly took it back. Second unit also did not work properly, we were told to purchase a $2000 add-on unit so it would work properly. When we expressed our discontent they were belligerent, rude and unhelpfull. Shop anywhere else, their customer service is a joke. Cons: , misrepresentation, attitude more
