Wow! Fratelli's is everything you could want in an authentic Italian restaurant. We recently dined there with a couple of friends and were delighted with absolutely everything t...

I thought the food was just ok. I believe people may think better of it due to the wonderful atmosphere. All three people at our table were given watered down drinks. We ended ...

Fratelli's EXCELLENT food is unbeatable. 1/3/2003

The atmosphere is for mature, patient and relaxed people. The waiters are not your best friend. They are VERY knowlegable about all the restaurant's offerings. THIS is NOT a take out restaurant, so make other plans if the babysitter doesnt show up. If though, you want to take someone special to a relaxed and magnificent meal, this is the restaurant for you. Pros: food, atmosphere, knowlegable waiters Cons: table availablity, distant waiters more

Cozy and comfortable 1/3/2003

This resteraunt was spectacutlar. I loved the candle light and the warm golw of the dinning room. The food is about the flavor. The service is informed and friendly. Pros: Affordable more

LOVE Fratelli 12/4/2002

Just a great restaurant. Well put together Italian. Not the homestyle Geno's variety (Geno's is great too), but food a bit more carefuly prepared & complex... Casual, friendly, dimly lit--nice atmosphere. Feels a bit like a hideaway and has none of the pretentiousness one may experience at some Pearl District restaurants. Pros: Food, Staff, Romantic more

Don't Believe the Hype 11/14/2002

I planned on dining at Fratelli's, but our babysitter couldn't make it at last minute, so we opted for take-out. I was instructed by one of the waiters that, "We don't really do take-out orders," and then he proceeded to ignore me, which upset me to no end. I went back out to my car, let me husband know what happened and he proceeded to continue with ordering our meal from the same guy. Anyhow, we brought the food home and started off with the cheese plate - a complete waste of $. Five small slices of cheese; three, of which, were awful. And then there was the pate, which was hellish. The tapenade we had couldn't of handled anymore salt, or they would simply have to call it black salt on crostini. And then there was the steak, which came with a side of potatoes literally swimming in oil. Pros: wine Cons: attitude at the door more

and the light was gleaming through 10/26/2002

As we started to eat our eyes met, smiles all around the table and the sweet smell of love (Food) in the air. It was the bruschetta that started this incredible meal off just right, with the hint of truffle oil and the sight of roasted tomatoes we knew our minds would be filled with Joy. Rock fish was my choice and meat lasagna was hers, everthing as perfect as the newly wrapped presents under the Christmas tree. Oh the desserts, oh the desserts. We could only hope to eat again sometime soon. Pros: the food Cons: the hall way walk more

Love Fratelli. 10/18/2002

Although sometimes I'm in the mood for the comfort of a big plate-o-pasta, or belt-loosining lasagna, However, I go to Fratelli for Italian that is carefuly prepared, complex and rich. I love food and have had some great meals here. I love the atmosphere. The owners and wait staff are friendly and remember your face & I like the wine list. One of my favorites here in Portland. more

Tickled my tastebuds 10/13/2002

I had the red rock fish, and it was so delicious. The price was right, the service was great. i would go there to eat tonight, if I wasn't back in school in Idaho. Why can't we have a place like that in every state? Pros: Lighting was great, very romantic, food was wonderful Cons: Not enough space more

I keep coming back for more 8/27/2002

Not pretentious, honest and some of the best food I've ever eaten. Pros: intriguing dishes, intimate, attention to detail Cons: uncomfortable chairs more

Shrinking portions! 8/25/2002

I have been to Fratelli several times and had always enjoyed the atmosphere, food, and service. However, I went the other night and was sadly disappointed. While the food was good, my Italian mama (!), the portions were teeeeny. The cheese "sampler" got giggles from the table. Tossed onto the small plate like leftovers were cheeses smaller than a postage stamp. The bruscetta was 9 bucks for three samples. My 'half chicken without the wing" was maybe half a breast, bone in. The halibut was maybe 4 oz. I left very disappointed and won't be back. Anyone else notice this serious slip? Pros: nice room, tasty, used to be great Cons: no food on the plate, horrible value more

Slice of Italy in Portland 8/13/2002

Paul and Tim have made in the past years what Portland really needed...Real country and authentic fare of Italian cuisine.. The food is always fantastic and it is one of the best places to go when you want to make your date feel special. This restaurant should win the best of the Pearl if not the best of Portland.. Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Paul and Tim Cons: Service more

Bravo 8/10/2002

Very delicious and fresh food. A real find. I'm a little tentative about my review because I don't want the place to become crowded. The Caesar salad was a very nice opener to my salmon, which was near devine. A little spendy though. Pros: Fresh, Delicious, Romantic more

Wow, what a find! 7/26/2002

Great housemade olives, wonderful limoncello and fantastic entrees make this a place not to be missed. Try the duck or the monkfish for a real winner. Service is a little indifferent and the atmosphere can be noisy, but after a couple of glasses of one of their excellent wines, who cares? Pros: wines, olives, cool entrance Cons: service is slow, noisy more

Bad Food & Rude Service 6/19/2002

Three of us had a miserable experience at Fratelli. The place holds promise in the way of charm and selection, but offers little in the way of execution and service. Our poulet was bloody when it arrived and our request to send it back was met with obvious inconvenience. When the poulet returned it had been mangled on the grill, as if to make a point of our hassle. There weren't any apologies or offers to make it right. The owner told us that if we came back to make sure we presented a "schmooze me" card. I have never sent anything back at a restaurant and don't consider myself a high-maintenance patron; one of the other diners with me happens to be married to a well-respected chef in town who was livid about our experience. The uppity attitude at Fratelli is the only thing they've perfected. more

cozy italian in the pearl ! 5/20/2002

dim lights, single stem candle on each table with wax dripping on the table/floor, tight space: THE place for a date and remarkable chow. so happy, so happy ! simplicity at it's best. Pros: candles, narrow space, location Cons: hard/stiff chairs more

Fantastic 5/16/2002

I had the best lasagna I've ever had in my life here. Came with a big group and had great service and everyone was very pleased with their meals. It was a busy Friday night, but not so noisy that we couldn't hold a conversation. Reasonably priced, too. I'll be back. Pros: good service more

  • In Short
Exuding a rustic, golden glow that warms from the open kitchen, the space is defined by simple stucco walls and candlelit tabletops. Intimately secluded seating draws in curious scenesters and regulars. The menu highlights fresh, local ingredients in hearty, traditional, northern Italian cuisine, such as prosciutto-wrapped chicken with Parmesan polenta, and lasagna with bechamel. Desserts reflect simplicity, including crispy profiteroles served with creamy, house-made basil ice cream pears and chocolate.
