Not a happy place 7/6/2005

We took a friend for a birthday celebration dinner here and were definitely underwhelmed. The atmosphere was quiet and gloomy. Nothing on the menu sounded very enticing. We ended up ordering one of the "house specialties" - lasagna, which was uninspired. The waiter was listless and bored, the service sporadic. We waited 20 min after dinner for dessert to arrive (tiniest dessert I've ever seen, the 4 of us each got one bite!) Pros: Immediate seating Cons: Uninterested server, small portions more

Great ambience, great food, great service! 6/28/2005

My friends and I are going back tonight for more! We love this restaurant!! We are celebrating my huband's new job, and this restaurant was his first choice! That speaks volumes, because there are so many great restaurants in Portland. Pros: Yummy Food, Pleasant staff, Relaxed environment Cons: Small waiting area more

Lived up to The Pearls NASTY-SNOTTY reputation 5/19/2005

I am a Portland native and have lived in other major US cities and I will say that this place is the perfect example of the pearls bad image (which I defended and thought did not exsist). We came in dressed casual looking to eat a good meal and what we got was HORRIBLE service. The same waiter attended to the table right next to us as if they were royalty and I will say that just because we did not name drop, act all "bragadosio" and show our "bling, bling" we were treated like second class citizens...asking for beverages, the check and to have the bill reconciled. As a resturant the food was good. But too many entree's offered. Not enough pasta choices (4 total - 2 were vegetarian). For the price I will say that you can spend your $$ at a better place in The Pearl. Pros: Food Cons: Service, Overall Value, Judgemental more

Wonderful Setting For Below Average Food 4/19/2005

Ambience was great, service was wonderful, but the food (at least the ravioli with dungeness crab) was rather bad - dry ravioli, yet swimming in a soupy flovorless sauce. I felt bad, but had to ask for salt to make my dish more palatble. Desserts were wonderful however. Perhaps other primi plates are better. more

Bella Cucina in the Pearl 11/5/2004

The dining experience at Fratelli was one of the best I've experienced in Portland. The service was excellent and the food was to die for. I highly reccomend the risotto with hazlenut, apple, and chicken confit. The flavor and unique food pairings made it an incredible meal. It's a great place for a date or go with friends. I will not heisitate to go back again and again. more

Fratelli-One of the Best 9/23/2004

Fratelli is awesome. I have been going here for years and the food is amazing. It is Italian, but not the homey, big sloppy style Italian most folks are used to. Instead, the food seems highly attended to. Not fancy or chic, but rich and varied in flavor and, in general, the plates seem as if the kitchen cared. The place looks great. It is primarily lit by candles, very romantic and a great date place. They also have big tables that are good for small groups. The service is always good, but not always excellent. Desserts can be good, but they not the highlight. Salads are great, as are pastas, bruscetta & they usually have a great meat or fish dish or special. Pros: ambience, value, food more

Fabulous meal 8/4/2004

We had a truly memorable meal at Fratelli last night! We loved every single dish. The ingredient combinations were inventive and the preparation and presentation were absolutely exquisite. Especially loved the grilled-bread and arugula salad--the hazelnuts added just the right touch. The halibut was perfectly cooked and served with wonderful accompaniments, and the chocolate mousse with pastis-infused sponge cake was a revelation. Our server was pleasant and professional, clearly enjoying his job. We'll be back as soon as we can! Pros: Great food, Relaxed atmosphere, professional service more

A disappointment 7/15/2004

Took husband here for his birthday with a reservation it took 45 minutes to get any food, the service could best be described as minimalist, the guy wasnt rude or anything. They say it is romantic, but any place where you turn out all the lights and put little votives on the table would fit this bill according to this description of romantic. You could do much better, my food was tasty but husband was not that interested in what he ended up with. Pros: ok food Cons: , expensive more

Opulenza 3/10/2004

I love Fratelli ristorante. The ravioli is to die for, the sauce is exquisite! The menu is small, and everything is an experience. When the snow storm hit, we were lucky enough to get out of the house and Fratelli's was it. The atmosphere is cozy and the servers are well versed in their culinary delights. Pros: food reasonably price, Yum more

Great Food & Atmosphere! 3/7/2004

We went to dinner here with our friends on Sat night and had a great experience! The atmosphere is great with the candles and the service was also very good with a helpful waiter. We ordered the bruchetta appetizer which was great. Then I had the shrimp and chickpea salad which was really good and the special fish which was halibut cheeks. Everyone elses dinners including the rockfish, lasagna, and other special monkfish pasta were all very good! I would defiantely go back here and believe it is one of the best Italian places in town. Pros: Food, atmosphere, service Cons: , need reservations? more

Reminiscent of Italy - Buono! 2/16/2004

The setting was delightful in the glow of candle light. The pace was leisurely. No rush to order or turn over the table. We started with a wonderful bottle of wine and the formaggi misti. The cheese was a delight. The gnocchi and the insalata verde were wonderful as well. He had the chicken and I had the pork chop and both were so amazing. The food was all prepared simply and straight forward and the sauce was fabulous. We look forward to going again. Pros: Leisurely pace, Food & Wine, Ambiance more

A Christmas to remember 2/8/2004

My family had the excellent opportunity to have dinner at Fratelli on Christmas eve for my sibling's birthday. Everything was amazing. From the salads - oh the beets and cheese - to the entres and the amazing dessert. The waiter - and owner - kept the wine coming, had an amazing anti pasto platter ready for us upon arrival, and topped of the night with amazing egg nog, just to celebrate the season. Tim and Paul are doing an amazing job. My husband and I eat here on many occasions and have never left disappointed - just stuffed! Pros: service, beet salad more

Wouldn't bother going again 1/20/2004

The waiters were extremely nice and helpful, but the food was only a little better than awful. My dish was supposed to have pork in it, but all I could find were several large chunks of pork fat. My friend's meal went half-eaten; although hungry, she just didn't want to eat it. No atmosphere to speak of. Our waiter told us that they had the beer we requested but that we couldn't have it; it was for the staff only..... Pros: Friendly service Cons: Everything else more

Wow! Very Romantic 10/26/2003

I brought my girlfriend here for a fourth year anniversary and we were impressed. The waiter was very helpful and suggested a wine that was to my girlfriends taste. The chocalate gelatin dessert was amazing and topped off a nice lasagna that my girlfriend had and a pollo dish that I had. Pros: Great food, Romantic atmosphere, Helpful staff Cons: Expensive more

Poor Service, Avg. Food 10/24/2003

A previous reviewer used zoolander to describe wait staff, spot on. The staff was pompous, didn't know the menu let alone the wine list and was laughable when it came down to the fake eurotrash attitude. Perhaps they forgot it was Portland. As for the food, average at best. Head up to 21st and you'll get better food and service without the smug attitude. Pros: poor service, rude, uninformed more

fratelli rocks 4/27/2003

Paul and the staff at Frattellis are great. The food is fresh, the tastes uncluttered, and it is too a good restaurant for kids (IF they are well behaved like ours). We go here for fun and special occaisions. Pros: changing menu, great wait staff Cons: parking more

Intimate Food 4/22/2003

Food was fantastic. Atmosphere is very romantic and intimate. The service was smart and friendly. Did I mention the food was fantastic? Pros: Great food, Reasonably priced, Very romantic more

mismatched but yummy 2/8/2003

the food is delicious, but combinations fail. basil ice cream shares a plate with chocolate chips, cream puffs and pears, but none of the partners have anything to say to one another. rocket crashes on top of creamy tagliatelle for no reason, and HARSH pickles fight with delicate crostini. obviously, this is an accomplished kitchen with high standards, but Concept trumps Palate. the food is so good, and should be better. impeccable service and decor. Pros: quality, service Cons: poor combinations more

Ok food with watered down drinks 1/23/2003

I thought the food was just ok. I believe people may think better of it due to the wonderful atmosphere. All three people at our table were given watered down drinks. We ended up sending them back and ordering a bottle of wine. Pros: romantic Cons: food, drinks more

no frills, no hype 1/6/2003

jan4: bread should be sub'ed out. bread tasted like pazzo's - tasteless, boring crust, too much flour for topping, anemic looking best lasagna in town. great grilled rockfish. Pros: comfort food, lax atmosphere, regular people Cons: bad bread more

  • In Short
Exuding a rustic, golden glow that warms from the open kitchen, the space is defined by simple stucco walls and candlelit tabletops. Intimately secluded seating draws in curious scenesters and regulars. The menu highlights fresh, local ingredients in hearty, traditional, northern Italian cuisine, such as prosciutto-wrapped chicken with Parmesan polenta, and lasagna with bechamel. Desserts reflect simplicity, including crispy profiteroles served with creamy, house-made basil ice cream pears and chocolate.
