Best

Had a groupon & enjoyed dinner with a friend this past Friday evening. Decent selections of beer on tap & wines. We were seated immediately and the server came over immediately wi...

Worst

I'm surprised at the lack of taste in their risotto. I agree with the last reviewer, as it was very mushy, almost an oatmeal like feel and way too fishy (and I love salmon risott...

Love this place! 7/1/2007

I can't believe I'd never heard about this place until I walked by one day while strolling Mississippi Ave! It is so fabulous. Great food, wonderful cocktails (Passion Pepp Incorporated!), helpful service and a warm, inviting atmosphere. I've been here twice now and both times, the food was sensational. It's my new favorite haunt in Portland. more

Delightful time in a casual atmosphere 6/18/2007

We returned here for Father's Day after a long absence. It's as wonderful as the last time we visited! We started with two terrific salads: even my husband, the vegetable phobe, was raving about how fresh and tasty his salad was. I had the pistachio-crusted (wild) salmon and just loved it. The food, presentation and the service are of such high quality, but without the stuffy, pretentiousness of other great restaurants. We love enjoying such great food in such a casual and comfortable atmosphere. The garden patio is so inviting; we have to come back when the weather is nice enough to eat out there. We also appreciated how accomodating Equinox was to our 3 year old daughter. I think the prices are very reasonable given the quality of the food. more

A Multi - Ethnic Epicurean Pearl in North Portland 6/13/2007

When we tried all over Portland to get a table for Valentine's day, and discovered that none could be found except a couple at odd hours that were grossly overpriced, I discovered the Equinox online. The owner took my call. He was charming and conversational, explaining that he disapproved of gouging customers on holidays. We tried it out, and our meals were not only creative and delicious, but everything was beautiful - including the cocktails. Valentine's Day is a very busy one for restaurants, but the server was helpful and courteous, and our courses arrived at a steady pace. We're going again this Friday for our anniversary. Pros: Creatively prepared cuisine at reasonable prices Cons: parking is a bit hard to find more

French Kiss!! 6/13/2007

What a great menu! We started with two cocktails...the French Kiss and La Pasion. One a vodka strawberry martini and the other a citron vodka martini with passion fruit puree...T.D.F. I thought the drinks were so creative and just as dynamic as the food. And, what a beautiful outdoor space. There are so many gorgeous plants, trees and flowers...it would be cool if they offered a guided tour. Pros: amazing food, great drinks, friendly service Cons: I'll let you know when I come up with one more

So friendly, so fantastic 6/3/2007

Thanks Equinox for such a great evening. Last Friday was my 40th birthday. I came in with 9 other friends, unnanounced. The host was so nice, she was able to seat us within 30 minutes of our arrival on a busy night. The food was remarkable, the service was as friendly and knowlegable as it gets. And the atmosphere...so sweet. THANKS!!! We'll all be back again and again. Pros: great service, food, atmosphere, air conditioning more

The worst of the worst 5/31/2007

I went with a small group of friends on a warm summer evening expecting a very pleasant experience. \r It wasn't to be. As soon as they learned our party exceeded seven, we were forced indoors despite the patio of empty tables. We had no choice in the matter even after expressing our wishes to the contrary. After curt comments, forcible directives and no flexibility we sat indoors. I choose to leave immediately. BUT, now since I was a group of ten my check had the gratuity added for a large party (now 10) even though I sat alone on the patio for an hour and indoors for 10 minutes. I have had the pleasure of Portland dining for 30 years. This is the poorest dining experience I can ever recall.\r Run away. Pros: Nice patio Cons: Horrible staff. Mediocre food. more

BEST OUTDOOR seating in Portland! 5/10/2007

I went to Equinox the other night with some friends and realized that I can't wait to spend many a summer nights on their beautiful patio! To compliment the patio, was the best mushroom wonton appetizer followed by an amazing beet salad. The food there is always delicious (oh yea, and affordable too :)) The staff is always very friendly and this restaurant has been a long standing favorite of mine. Will DEFINITELY be back! Pros: food and atmosphere more

Fabulous 2/5/2007

I have been to Equinox a few times and every time I go everyone I am with and myself all have a wonderful experience. The food is terrific, the staff is sweet and pleasant, and the atmosphere is nice. I highly recommend their pumpkin soup - it is to die for!!!\r I will definately be back again and again more

Best Ketchup eva!!! 11/21/2006

I love the breakfast at equinox. It is definatley one of the best trendy spots in the North Mississippi area. Pros: Amazing food more

Wonderful food and perfectly attentive (but not TOO attentive) service! 10/25/2006

Celebrated our 18th anniversary at Equinox this week and the ambiance, food, and service were all perfectly in tune w/ the special but unpretentious evening we wanted to have. We meandered through several courses and cocktails/vino and our waitress was perfectly attentive, getting courses and drinks to us w/ expert timing (no new course showed up before we finished the previous one, neither did we have to wait forever for the next course or drink). Her wine and food recommendations were right on target. And they gave us dessert for free (banana won tons)! Must haves: the gnocchi, the stuffed pepper appetizer, the rosemary and citron martini . . . more

Great Customer Service 10/23/2006

We had a great server who put up with my group of girlfriends and our various beverage orders, noisiness and order changes. Our server took it all in stride and we had a great meal. The food was very good. I would definitely reccommend Equinox. Would love to go in the summer for outdoor seating! Pros: Service, food more

Best in North Portland 9/30/2006

I can't imagine how anyone who frequents Equinox regularly can have anything negative to say about this place. Been going there since it opened and, yes, when chef Desmond left for a few months back in 2005, there was a definate downhill shift. But, since his return, Equinox has regained its footing and provides once again the best tasting food, drink and excellent service that we first fell in love with! Overall, the best place in North Portland. more

fabulous food and nice staff 8/29/2006

What a wonderful restaurant. I loved my food and the service was very good (not usual in Portland for some reason). I highly recommend trying it out! Pros: food, service Cons: don't go on a holiday - they raise their prices more

Great meal and ambiance! 8/29/2006

It's not often that a restaurant serving a little bit of everything can be this consistent, but Equinox is definitely up to the task. From the inventive cocktails to the decadent but refreshing desserts, a meal here is not one to miss.\r \r The hostess seemed a bit frazzled and forgot our silverware and menus, but our server more than made up for it with his knowledgeability about the food, wine, and cocktails. The staff is low-key, and the patio is great on warm days. Pros: Great food and drinks, ambiance Cons: Parking only on-street more

Best overall experience!! 8/26/2006

Not really sure where to begin, but definitely want to put the word out that the EQUINOX is fantastic! I've had their brunch and dinner and have NEVER had a bad meal. The service has ALWAYS been top notch and the atmosphere is incredibly relaxing. The drink menu is creative and the seasonal menu keeps me coming back. \r \r I will definitely be back for more... Pros: Service, quality of food, atmosphere more

avoid tuesday nights 8/15/2006

it took 20 minutes just to get the soda and 50 minutes after that the apitizer came and it was over done Cons: the service was bad more

loved it! 8/12/2006

I enjoyed the atmosphere and the food was outstanding. The service here was very personalized and I appreciated the fact that the servers weren't wearing uniforms. Overall a good experience. I will be back. more

i prefer a bit of effort... 8/3/2006

The outdoor patio is charming, as is the music drifting in from the corner. But sitting with empty water glasses for extended periods of time and waiting for your entrees for 45+ minutes is not acceptable service when you are paying almost $100 dollars for three to eat dinner. The food was warm, (but not hot,) when it finally reached our table, but it was just ok. One of my dining companions noted that it would have tasted much better had we not waited so long for the food to come out. \r I would have understood if it had been busy, but it wasn't. There were many open tables and more than enough staff on the floor. \r I would imagine it it a lovely place to go for happy hour, but I was a bit dissapointed in our dining experience. Pros: service, food, and empty water glasses Cons: patio, music more

great martini selection 6/22/2006

i talked to the owner/chef, and here are a few more things he'd like to make clear:\r 1 they are now open monday & tuesday\r 2 they just got the summer menu!\r 3 they fired the guy that was helping to cook the food...good, or bad-you decide.\r \r just wanted to clear that with you. Pros: martinis, patio, good food Cons: service, at times, can be bad... more

no comparison 6/14/2006

Living in north Portland, we have a lot of brunch options, but none compare to the lovely Equinox. The food is always innovative and delicious, the service friendly and attentive and the court yard is a beautiful little oasis in the middle of bustling Mississippi.\r I discovered this gem not long after they opened two years ago and have made it my regular weekend breakfast destination.I have enjoyed the variety of seasonal menu changes and the incorporation of local ingredients as well as the staples of orange-infused french toast, puff pastry benedicts and fresh squeezed juices. and they serve the best coffee in town- Stumptown.\r It can get pretty hopping, but i've never had to wait more than 15 min for a table & the food always comes out faster than i expect- and well executed.\r in short, it's a fantastic experience all around - from the ambiance, to the food, to the service and I'd highly recommend checking it out. more
