Good food, but.... 11/26/2010

My wife and I love this place! The carnitas are fantastic and if you like mussels, you have to try theirs! We were in there recently and had a great dinner upstairs in the tiny seating area. Service was friendly and prompt, choice of music could use a little work however. loud techno at dinner? hmm. more

Not worth it... 5/5/2010

I won't order fish tacos anywhere else, there's just no comparison. Grilled cod with garlic aoli, cilantro, Mexican slaw... amazing. The margaritas are legendary. If you get two top shelf margaritas, don't plan on driving, or remembering anything the next day. The guacamole is the best in town. The problems with this restaurant, however, outweigh the good aspects. Do not try to take young children here. Period. All of the food is too spicy for most kids, even the black beans and the rice, and there are certainly no meals designed for children. The staff is friendly but frazzled from elbowing their way through the suffocating and cramped restaurant all day. The owner is extremely unfriendly and un-accomodating. As mentioned, the back patio is noisy and the tables and plastic chairs are third world. It's a shame, because I really think it's the best Mexican in town, but I haven't been there in over a year because of the aforementioned issues. Pros: Incredible fish tacos, lethal margaritas! Cons: Way too crowded, Anti-kid, uncomfortable, MEAN owner. more

The Owner Is Rude 12/16/2007

Two weeks ago, I might have given El Mundo three or maybe even four stars. But last weekend, my friends and I got there early so we would have no problem dining at what ususally is a very busy restaurant with a very long wait. It's cramped upstairs, but you have to make do. After being there for an hour or so, we were ""greeted"" by the owner. I have been in the restaurant business for YEARS as both a server and a manager at a very prestigous resaturant here in Louisville. That being said I am used to the owner coming over to check on our meal and how it went. Although I found her behavior a little suspicious, we let it go and continued with our margiritas and conversation. We noticed a table behind us had been cleaned and open for about 20 mins. I was suprised at how slow they were that night. We kept asking our server, who we knew, if it was ok that we were there and she said yes. About 20 mins later the owner comes over again and I ask her, jokingly, "" Do you want our table?"". And she says as a matter of factly ""Yes, I do"". She had a very stern look on her face like we did something wrong and basically asked us to leave so she could seat someone else there. We had spent about ninety dollars that night and had been there about an hour and a half.I know some people camp at tables, but I know that really, you never, EVER, ask someone to leave in order to seat someone else.Especially when we have come there so many times before and waited and waited and I would have never thought for her to ask anyone else to get up. Is the customer always right? Well they should be.Having waited on rude people before I want to say no, but you just don't ask someone to leave their table.Especially when they still have their drinks or whatnot. One of my girlfriends there with me works right down the street at a VERY popular restaurant and was complaining to me how this one couple had been at a table for hours. Her & the owner couldn't do any b/c you JUST DON'T DO THAT. NEVER GOING BACK. Pros: The food is good. Seated promptly THIS time. Cons: The owner is bad. more

Too dirty and too cramped 4/14/2007

We tried this place several times and while the food is pretty tasty, it is way over-priced especially considering the ""third world"" conditions. Service was OK, but it's dingy and cramped inside and needs more air from the kitchen fumes drifting up from below. Pros: Food can be tasty Cons: Dirty, run down facilities, cramped and stuffy. more

great margs and fish tacos!!!!! 5/8/2006

The only fish tacos I've had before are fried. These were grilled, moist and served with a delicious chipotle sauce. I sat in the backyard at concrete tables that were painted and had huge umberellas...it was crowded and festive. The 3 dollar frozen margarita I ordered was great...i could actually taste the tequila! We had a ball! Pros: great bar while waiti, fun staff, delicious food more

Over rated!!! Not a top 10 for Mexican 1/19/2006

I visited El Mundo over the summer, and was willing to try a new place with some friends who had been there before. We got there and I felt like we were entering some old bar, then we went to the back of the resturant for the seating on the patio, this was not the best place to be seated, gravel for a floor, plastic chairs to sit in, which the one I was sitting in the leg broke off half way through the dinner, its right next to the train tracks on Franfort Avenue so you hear the trains rumbling thru several times. The food was not that great, I didnt feel like it was a very good value for what you got. I'm sure for the area its in its a nice little place to eat but I would not make a special trip to eat dinner there. Cons: Poor Patio Seating, Parking, Food Quality more

Bad food...good atmosphere 11/7/2005

I went to el mundo after looking at this site for a good mexican restaurant in Louisville. I have to say that there isn't any way possible it is the best. We got queso which was pretty good but the chips were like the nacho chips you get at a baseball game. Had a quesadilla to eat and it was cheese and chicken and tasted like the chicken came straight from a can... would not recommend Pros: Atmosphere, Service Cons: Food, Value more

Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 6/13/2004

The food is the best Mexican food I have ever eaten!! They do serve more than beer and soft drinks. You CAN get a mixed drink if you want one. Pros: Great food, Inexpensive, Friendly more
