As my first interaction with Honolulu service industry, this one was AWFUL. We went to buy a beach mat and get some change ($1 bills) for the bus. We told this to the cashier in advance, she calmly sold us the mats, and refused, point-blank, to give change ($17) in anything BUT $10, $5, and two dollar bills. Our entreaties did not impress her. She was living in her own world, and no tourist was going to get away with any, however polite, requests.
Well, we returned the mats. (I found out later they were at a rip-off price there anyway!). We also got more $1 bills that way. I couldn't believe this!
