1st experience w/ hungarian food, piano bar? 11/23/2008

This is the first time I've experienced a Hungarian restaurant. It was intense in the meat department. Meat meat everywhere. We got the sampler appetizer and the sampler entree and it was more than enough food to feed the four of us (2 of which are built like linebackers). We took a photo of the entree because it was so over the top. Literally it was a pile of food (80% meat) on a wooden slab. The waitress was extremely nice, professional and knowledgable. I only regret we didn't try the Hungarian booze. If you're a vegetarian or don't enjoy fried meats this might not be a good choice for you. Overall the food was decently prepared albeit heavy. The cabbage was very enjoyable. The atmosphere is good, staff very personable. It seems like a lot of 'characters' would frequent this kind of establishment. I was a little surprised to see the piano and microphone in the corner. I don't know when they have the piano music going on, but that would be the time to go. It would really amp up an already quirky establishment. Also they gave us loaves of bread. I don't know if that's their standard policy or if they just had a lot of delicious bread that they didn't want to go to waste, but it was pretty nice of them. I say give it a try. It's a huge restaurant with barely any people in it. Heck, have a party there. Pros: quirky establishment, great staff Cons: very heavy food, lots of meat more

Their Wiener Schnitzel is better then my Mom's cooking! 8/20/2008

I am a native Hungarian and recently had dinner there with a friend and my daughter. We all had Wiener Schnitzel, with cucumber salad and it was EXCELLENT! Dobos torte was just as good. The server was friendly and attentive. I was surprise to see only a few customers there Sunday evening because the prices were very reasonable. They need to promote their restaurant better. Pros: Great food without breaking the bank Cons: Not fancy but clean more

Please, please don't go here !! EXTREMELY BAD FOOD !!! 4/22/2008

When we entered the restaurant the place was completely empty! I mean nobody was in, besides the waitress. This should have been the sign to leave, but we decided to stay since our taxi left already. We are Hungarian citizens and we were on our honeymoon in Los Angeles, so believe me we know when a Hungarian restaurant is good or not. We started asking in Hungarian if it was possible to dine on the terrace, since you can smoke on terraces in LA. The waitress answered that she couldn't speak Hungarian. When we asked if it was cold on the terrace, she answered 'it's the same temperature as outside'! We decided to sit on the terrace and the waitress came back after 5 minutes giving us the menu and our drinks. I asked her were she came from and she answered from Russia, Moscow. After 5 minutes she came back and asked if we decided already. We said not yet and she went back in. 5 minutes later she came back with a face like 'made your decision or not'! We did and my wife took the 'korozott' sort of blended goat cheese and I took the 'Hortobagy palacsinta'. Her dish was fine, mine not really and far from a real 'Hortobagy palacsinta' and very fat! As main course my wife took the roasted duck and I took the stuffed cabbage. The duck was over cooked and a bit green inside! The stuffed cabbage was extremely fat and far from tasty. Our waitress was very rude and when she came back to gather our more or less still full plates, she didn't asked if the food was good or not. Obliviously she could have seen that we didn't eat their food at all, but it would have been a nice question from her side. When she offered us the dessert menu, we kindly asked her to call a taxi for us. We refused to stay here longer! She called a taxi, we paid and runned afterwards to the toilet in our hotel to get rid of this awful food! So please, please, we beg you DON'T GO AND EAT HERE! It's a waste of money, time and costs you afterwards the same amount of money on toilet paper. Pros: I don't know, maybe the view of the street from the terrace? Cons: Everything more

Terrific Hungarian food and super service 3/8/2008

Each one of us in our party of 4 just LOVED the food - the schnitzel was terrific, very light and very crisp, with very tasteful potatoes and red cabbage. The stuffed cabbage was out of this world and the Hungarian bean soup was soooooooo tasty and different. A definite return when we are in the LA area again. The desserts looked great but we couldn't budge, the portions being so very generous. HIGHLY recommend this restaurant for those enjoying Hungarian/European cuisine.. Pros: sufficient lot and street parking, great service, TERRIFIC food more

Avoid if you can! This is not representative of the succulent Hungarian food. 11/13/2007

Bad Bad Bad, bad food, bad service. If you are from Hungary or even been in Hungary, you know this place is not meeting the standard of the tasty flavors or Hungarian food. Pros: It's pretty Cons: the food and service are below average. more

Great Food! Loved it! 11/9/2007

I was missing my mom's Chicken Paprikas so we decided to try this place last night. The food was so great, it felt like a home cooked meal! My boyfriend was very happy with the stuffed cabbage, and he doesn't normally like sauerkraut but he ate it and loved it! I loved the cucumber salad, and the chicken paprikas was great. I loved the homemade noodles! The wine was great and it went well with the chocolate cheesecake we had for dessert. I normally don't like cheesecake, but it wasn't heavy at all! I love how they were playing Hungarian Opera on the plasma t.v., definitely added to the ambiance, which is lacking as other people have commented. With some lighting and a makeover to add a more ""homey"" feel, it would be amazing! I will for sure go back, and when my Hungarian dad comes to visit I'll take him there! Pros: Great Staff, Amazing food, great wine Cons: ambience more

Fan*Freakin*Tastic 5/14/2007

This restaurant is seriously the best place to go east of La Brea!!!!! SOOOOOO good, honestly!! The service is beyond fabulous. If you have a question about the menu, the knowledgeable staff is more than happy to help you select an item that you will fit your taste. They have a rather extensive wine list, to my surprise. If you have ever had stuffed cabbage made by a true Hungarian you will absolutely die for the stuffed cabbage at Csardas. Not to mention the chicken paprikash that motivated me to book a flight to Hungary. I can't wait!!! Pros: Delicious food, attentive service, take-out, wine list Cons: not open 24 hours more

You gotta order... 11/21/2006

...the chicken crepe and the chicken paprikash. Those two dishes were extremely delicious. My friends and I visited the restaurant on a weekday and the restaurant was completely empty. So needless the say, the staff was pretty attentive. Stay away from the appetizer cheese plate. That was kinda yucky. Pros: Good food, reasonable prices Cons: Absolutely dead on the weekdays more

maybe it was just a bad day 9/18/2006

ok, if you want something that was hungary about 20years ago, go there, if you want to know how hungarians dine these days, don't go there! the meal i had was not good unfortunately. i had stuffed cabbage, maybe that's not the their speciality, i don't know. staff is very friendly and the prices are great! i might give it a second try or i might just grab a hungarian cook book. Pros: great price, great service Cons: food - not that good.... more

Authentic Hungarian 3/26/2006

Food is incredible! If you are looking for a true Hungarian meal - go here! Good prices - Great wine list - But Like the other reviews - lacking in ambiance. Though that is more than made up for with the quality of the meals! Its quiet- with a great staff. Pros: Easy Parking, Authentic Dishes, Outside Seating Cons: Ambiance more

Love this spot! 2/5/2006

My wife and I live right around the corner and hopped in here one night. Great food, great ethnic spot. Old family atmosphere, ambience is lacking, but food, service and the cultural experience is fantastic. Make sure you get the Hungarian after dinner wine! Hungarian pianist and everything. Definitely GO! Pros: Delicious, Affordable, Interesting Vibe Cons: Needs Facelift, Lighting more

Great food, very authentic, very reasonably priced. Atmosphere is not too much on the romantic side, but the food more than makes up for it. They even have Hungarian TV!! Pros: Great food, Nice service, Reasonably priced Cons: Quaint atmosphere more

Csardas 6/27/2003

We started off with a chicken crepe and had the veal goulash and chicken paprikash for the main course. All of the sauces were flavorful, particularly the goulash, which I had to keep eating to believe. It was really tasty. Dinner came with a cucumber salad which rounded out the flavors of the entrees. A great dining experience. more

Food to Die For 1/31/2003

A quiet restaurant located in Hollywood, CA. Waiters tend to your every need. The food is excellent at a very reasonable price. Their wine selection is excellent, specializing mostly in European wines. Pros: Reasonably Priced, Large Wine Selection Cons: Difficult Parking more
