Best

Made reservations to sit at a table by the fire and when we got there we had a perfectly set table directly in front of the fire. The service was excellent, we told our server it...

Worst

It's a shame they remodeled. It would have been nice to leave some of the old intact...just isn't the same breakfast experience.

Outstanding 6/30/2003

We had a great time, we met Moe the owner, Bruce the Manager and Andrew the outrageously entertaining head bartender. The food was tremendous, atmosphere very enjoyable, waiter was very knowledgable and suggested the marinated hen. High attention to detail (i.e always full water glass). We can't wait to go back, do yourself a favor and give this one a try. Prices reasonable but a little spendy, well worth it though. Pros: Friendly Staff, Great Food, Nice Atmosphere Cons: a little spendy more

What happened? 4/8/2003

This used to be my favorite restaurant! The managers and wait staff used to remember my name. I brought all my friends from out of town here and now... I'm at a loss. I didn't see a single friendly face. They changed their menu. The prices are higher and the penne, which used to be the crown jewel of the menu was bland and soupy. I won't even go into what will now be referred to as the ""calamari incident of 2003."" It was awful. Please, save your money. more

Love this Place. 2/13/2003

I work at United, so this place is convenient for lunch or dinner. Beautifully revamped, the decor is a far cry from the old downtowner grill. They have a great happy hour with $3.00 flavored martinis. I loved the pineapple crush. Great Burgers and Pizzas. A perfect treat for pre-events at the Xcel. It's refreshing to have a great restaurant so close to an area that has events 3 or 4 times a week. Pros: Atmosphere, Service, Food Cons: Parking at times more

One of St. Paul's finest 2/3/2003

This is one great find in the City. Beautiful restaurant, soothing atosphere. I have been here for both breakfast and dinner and both are equally outstanding. Because it is so great, your party may have to wait. But with free parking and tasty grilled foods, you will not be disappointed. Pros: Cool location, Free parking, Delicious more

Excellent for everything but the food 1/12/2003

It was an enjoyable evening. We didn't have to wait more than 45 minutes without a reservation. The service was excellent, the ambience was excellent. The food was boring at best. The steak had no taste. The steak sauce provided by them was bland. The was my first time to the Downtowner and I may go back. But it will not be for the food. Pros: Service, Atmosphere, Romantic Cons: Food more

Excellent! 1/5/2003

The Downtowner offered a wonderful experience with a great atmoshpere and even better food. The service was good as well. Pros: cozy, excellent food, a special night more

Better than Advertised!!! 12/17/2002

The Downtowner, also known to many as the Woodfire Grill is a fantastic restaraunt in St. Paul. It probably has the best food for the price in a sit down environment. You can make dinner cheaper (10-15 plate) or expensive. Great atmosphere and digs. Better food than across the street at Vine Park. A must eat restaurant. Pros: Great Food, Flexible Budget, Awesome Atmosphere more

curl up and dine 11/17/2002

On all 3 of our visits we have come away very pleased. the space is so inviting and comfortable with it's fireplace, large booths and friendly staff. The persian cooked meats are tasty with interesting ( not too hot) spices and the mashed potatoes are a favorite. more

Tasty chicken, burnt steak 11/16/2002

The food at the Downtowner Wood fire Grill was pretty tight, I guess. The restaurant was very cozy, although geared more towards a generation older than I. The woodfire chicken was fantastic, as were the garlic mashed potatoes. Our steak howvwer, was hardly ""medium,"" detracting from our dining experience. TIP: Avoid the steak sauce made w/raisins. Our server described it as ""different."" Apparently, different now means disgusting. Pros: quick seating, MASHED POTATOES!, pita before meal :) Cons: parking was awful, steak sauce:(, loud more

FANTASTIC! 10/17/2002

This place has the best food, at the most reasonable prices in town. The 'persian' meats on skewers are great. Tasty and well seasoned. more

Downtowner let me down! 9/12/2002

Some friends and I went to the Downtowner Woodfire Grill after reading a rave review about it in the paper--we were very disappointed. The service was extremely slow, the staff was not very pleasant, and the building was freezing cold. The food was quite good and the atmosphere was cozy and aesthetically pleasing, but it DEFINITELY was NOT worth the long, cold wait. Pros: beautiful, good food Cons: temperature, slow service more

What a Bargain! 8/15/2002

Last Tuesday my boyfriend and I had dinner at the Downtowner Woodfire Grill. I had the woodfired salmon with garlic mashed potatoes and my boyfriend had the chicken penne pasta. The food was excellent, and we had a bargain half price bottle of Z.D. Chardonnay. We had a very beautiful time in a nice romantic setting and the service was excellent. Pros: great menu selection, free close parking, nice wine selection more

Absolutely fantastic! 8/14/2002

The other day I was with my friend for lunch at the Downtowner Woodfire Grill. I had a fabulous fire roasted tuna salad, and my friend had a great apple and bleu cheese pizza. The lunch was outstanding as well as the service. For dessert we split the apple crisp, which was out of this world! It honestly melts in your mouth. We also thought the parking lot across the street was convenient as well as free! I would recommend the Downtowner Woodfire Grill to anyone. They have a menu that caters to all tastes. Pros: wonderful food, great parking, fantastic ambience more

5 star! 8/14/2002

Fatastic decore and food! Check out the bar, open kitchen and the fireplaces. My husband & I enjoyed a romantic evening there. Service was fast and friendly. Fire-Roasted meats are delicious and tender. Highly recommended! If you go on a Tues night, you can get any bottle of wine on the menu at 1/2 price. We will definetely go back later in the week to listen to their live music. Pros: Free Parking more

It just isn't the same breakfast experie 7/19/2002

Delicious! 6/13/2002

The two times I have eaten here, I ordered the specials. First, I had swordfish with an amazing tapenade. The second time, I ordered steak with a chimichurri sauce on a bed of garlic mashed potatoes. Unbelievable! The food is fabulous, and the use of fresh herbs and spices should be commended. The food was cooked to perfection, and not bland like much of the food in the Twin Cities. The flourless chocolate cake was worth the trip alone. The atmosphere is relaxed and attractive. They also have very nice, clean restrooms. Pros: Lighting, Fireplace, Windows more
