Is it worth it??? Buyer beware!!! 11/5/2011

I've been a member of Dolphin Fitness since it opened in 2001. I've seen it change over the years and not for the better. There are new people at the desk and they have decided to eliminate the studio room in the basement thus eliminating the yoga classes. They are going to expand the weights area so the muscle-heads can have more room. Mgmt. feels its wasted space!! What a poor management decision!!! Everyone uses that room. They are relegating the area in the back for stretching. This is only the tip of an ugly iceberg. The number of classes is minimal and the teachers are paid by the members who come to the classes. People sign up everyday but no money has been put back into the gym. Where's the money going, Andy???? The equipment is old, the padding is torn and ripped and the place is dirtyand smelly with no ventilation. Machines are out of service for months at a time. The new people in charge are clueless!! And now want to remove a room that isused by many for the benefit of a few. It's just a matter of time before another Dolphin gym bites the dust. more

Be Careful 12/7/2010

This gym SUCKS! First, this guy Murray who owns the gym is a joke, and he looks like a scam artist. The prices are different for everybody. The gym is so dirty, you never see no one cleaning during busy hours. The equipment needs to be upgraded. The staff is cool but it's keep changing, there was bitcy female manager who looks like she got hers lips inflated, also this extremely nice big man who did convience me to \r join and I did.....I am leaving this nasty club and I'm taking my girlfriend with me. Also, please check with the building management and ask ""when was the last time dolphin fitness pay there rent? more

Better off jogging in the park 7/31/2010

THIS IS THE WORST GYM IN THE CITY. SCAM I used to be a member of the Ave B location, which closed and was redirected to this Gym. Ave B location sucked, old machines and dirty, but it was right around the corner, and cheap so I sucked it up for a few years. Now this location is equally dirty and rickety, but on top of that it's half the size, with three times the amount of people. You have 15 guys trying to do chest on one bench press. Forget about ever doing supersets. You're better off joining the community health center on Ave C for $50/year, or if you can prove low income go to the YMCA and they will give you a cheap deal. If you do have money and serious about getting in shape, join Iron and Silk on 3rd street. The best cleanest, nicest gym in town. Do not join this gym unless you live across the street and only want to do cardio when other people work (during rushhour it's a long wait). It's nasty, crowded, rude owner, negative vibes, you're forced to work out in a shopping window where every passerby can see what a looser you are for working out here and they WILL laugh at you. Pros: cheap Cons: small, smelly, dirty, rude, negative vibe more

inexpensive neighbourhood gym 3/10/2010

Dolphin works for me as a local Cardio gym , If you just need a place to get in your CV's and a bit of free weights , this is it. Inexpensive good deals . I do a lot of Yoga elsewhere and I just needed a cheap cardio workout .... Dolphin works ... If your looking for full body workouts, inspiration and pampering as a Woman , this isn't your place . Pros: inexpensive , great opening hours Cons: small, machines often out of order more

A scam! Do not trust them with your credit card info 5/12/2009

Do not trust these people. They falsified my contract. Unbelievable. I joined Dolphin Gym looking for a bargain basement alternative to the super-expensive gyms in the village. I wasn't looking for anything fancy. As part of my sign-up, I got a free training session. At the end of the session, they offered me a package of 6 training sessions over a month. Again, I liked the cheap price so I signed up -- big, big mistake. I found out later they filled out the blank portions of the contract later so it wasn't 6 sessions but 36 sessions. I couldn't believe it. They said they were going to charge me like $1800! They said they would cancel it -- but only if I paid them a $250 fee. What a scam! Do not trust them with your credit card information under any circumstances. Cons: They falsified a contract; Tried to extort money more

The best deal hands down in nyc 3/25/2009

I read the other reviews and have to admit I was skeptical. However I figured if I used common sense I would be able to avoid problems (shady management practices). Like having a reciept (avoid questions on how much I paid), having original copies of membership etc. So I called and sure enough they offered me a deal ""I couldn't refuse"", I mean come on $169 for 7 months??? I'm sure you've done the math, but thats $21 a month!! You are not finding anything like that in nyc (Manhattan). And no sign up fee HA! Ok the gym. It's not huge but it has everything for a good workout. And I suppose that's why we're signing up for a gym right? All types of cardio, free weights etc. Now it's not all top of the line but it's not dirty or scuzzy. Plus really who needs flat screen tvs everywhere, ""health"" bar to have ""health drinks"", a live dj??? yeah all those things and more make other gyms expensive $80 up per month and riduculous sign up fees. This place rocks and I'm happy. Pros: Well first the cost, I just signed up for 7 months $169 Tota Cons: The the biggest gym out there and smells like a gym more

shady management practices 6/23/2008

If you are looking for a cheap, no frills gym, this is it. It has an extensive class list which is great and there are plenty of yoga classes that come free with membership. I was willing to overlook the lack of air conditioner and members who don't refresh their deodorant or clean off the machines until I had a problem with my membership. I signed up for the ""Buy one year, get 6 months free,"" however I didn't get a copy of the service aggreement (I've now learned the hard way.) When I questioned the early expiration date of my membership (I still 3 months left), the staff member pulled out my customer record. The $300 I had paid was scratched out and $249 written in its place. (I know I paid $300 dollars because I used 3 $100 bills.) The management refused to honor the membership I paid for. (I have a feeling the staff member who signed me up pocketed the $50 bucks and changed my membership after I left.) The management acknowldeged that I did pay for an extended service, but wouldn't correct the mistake. I was going to renew my membership (at a higher price), but I when this happened I changed my mind. They just lost a customer because of their dishonesty and poor customer service.\r Pros: cheap, lots of yoga classes Cons: facilty (equip. always out of order), customer service more
