DOC, don't bother 1/16/2011

DOC was quite different. Limited menu. But the distressing issue was the service. This was our first time, and we were not well attended. We ordered bread and olives which was an extra charge, and that wasn't delivered until we asked for it when our primi and appetizer was served. The risotto was moderately good, but nothing to rave about, and the chicken livers were overcooked, and not very appetizing. The lamb shank was good, but the lasange with kale was pretty tasteless. I asked to take the bread & olives home, the olives and oil were dumped in the box with the bread. I was really quite appalled, and certainly wouldn't recommend DOC to my friends. more

One of the best in PDX! 6/1/2010

Flawless service. The wine pairings were perfect with each course. Recommend the tasting menu as you get a little bit of each dish on the menu, although the entire table has to get the tasting menu which might not be suitable for everyone. The brussel sprout dish served the night I went was beyond description! The sprouts were crispy and buttery. Blood orange sorbet to top off the meal was divine! Can't wait to go back! Pros: Wine pairings, service, food more

One of the premier meals in Portland 7/16/2009

I visited DOC despite opinions of some of the reviews on here, and to be honest found them grossly inconsistent with my experience. While the space is small and the kitchen and dining area are one and the same, in no way did it effect the quality of our meal. In fact, one in our party commented about the laid-back, attentive style of those cooking the food-even comparing it to articles and shows on the style of Thomas Keller's kitchens in Napa.\r \r A good thing ot keep in mind is that PDX is not NYC, and that DOC is not Gaucho or even Paley's-but that doesn't mean that service is not great, despite its lack of stuffy formality. The personal attention was outstanding and contributed completly to the dining experience. Also, they were willing to communicate with us to ensure that our dining experience was up to apr in every way, rather than assuming that they knew exactly what we were expecitng at each moment. It was a refreshing change from the ghostly lurkers that populate some other well-regarded restaurants.\r \r And the food-the four of us DID partake in the tasting menu, and we were able to try the entire menu as a group. Each of us recieved our own dish for every course other than Bread/Olives, and whenever possible we each recieved something different. This was a true attempt at a ""tasting menu,"" not just using the term interchangably with prix fixe. The wines that were poured, as reccomended by the wine expert (som?), were not only a perfect match, but unique. Both couples at the table have large cellars, and we were all amazed at the new varietals and styles that were able to try in a single meal.\r \r All in all, one of the best dining experiences in Portland. The attention to ingredients was strikingly similar to a Paley's or Higgins, the service was top knotch, and the really unique chracter of the space as well as the food and neighborhood make it an establishment that I would highly reccomend. Pros: Personal service, INCREDIBLE quality of food, Tasting Menu Cons: Small Menu? (Not a con to me, but maybe to some) more

needs some fine tuning 6/30/2009

My friends and I were in a few days ago and went with the tasting menu and there were a few gliches. I am hoping the owners read these reviews so they can iron a few things out. The first course, antipasti, served on one plate for four people did not have enough food for 4 people. There were 4 rillettes, that were kinda over greasy/fatty and needed salt, but nothing else on the plate was for 4. There were only 3 SMALL pieces of cheese so we had to divide them so there was enough for the 4th person. When served the soup, one bowl was placed on the table for everyone to share. Now, I really like my friends, but a communal soup bowl is pushing it, thankfully we were all healthy at the time. We did ask about it and they brought us ramikens that WE sat there and divided out. I could go on, but the real issue was that there was not enough food. We were each paying $50 and I did not feel that I got my monies worth. And our dining experience was constantly interrupted by us having to stop and figure out how to best share the food so everyone got something. A suggestion on the cheese course would be to offer TWO pieces of bread cut in two -so 4 small per plate- we got 1 piece of bread and decided we would each keep our own piece bread and we passed the dish on. It was just not well planned or executed. I really wanted to like this place, I was very excited to go, but I left hungry and under-whelmed. I hate to say it, but it just wasn't worth the money. I really hope this place works it out, If you are reading this, you should go give them a try, just don't get the tasting menu. Pros: space is cute Cons: tasting menu not a value more

I was expecting so much better! 4/18/2009

I had a great experience at ""Beast"" 1 block from D.O.C.. I had heard great reviews on D.O.C. and all I can say it is a ""Beast wanna be"" restaurant without the class of the waiters and the quality of the food. It was noisy, the service was mediocre. Waiters were reciting their little ""lyrics"" and the food was so so so so bla. Very expensive for what it was! I will definitly return to ""Beast""! Please, try to be original in your own way! Pros: Original, funky! as in....you walk through the kitchen first Cons: ""Beast"" wanna be! more

Wonderful food, charming atmosphere 3/20/2009

My husband and I just stumbled upon DOC and had a wonderful meal there. Our waitress was very nice and the food was just delicious - every course very fresh. My husband said his lamb was some of the most tender meat he had ever tasted. Even the coffee was noteworthy - brewed in such a way that - as our waitress told us - it drinks more like a tea. Just wonderful. Definitely a new favorite. And, while it is pricey, it's worth it. Our dinner for two, shared appetizer, wine, 2 desserts and coffee came to $110 with tip. Reasonable for a very nice meal or special occasion. Pros: extremely fresh food, friendly service more

Great service but missingsome key peices 2/17/2009

Come on guys, Cold Plates. Was there last week (not Valintines day). Never had been there before but pass by everyday on my way to work so decided i should support a local eatery. Sat down and we decided to indulge in the 5 course tasting menu with the wine paring. \r \r My first dish was mutton with mushrooms. All the Key Peices were there nice flavor and all but the food was cold. I thought perhaps they went out on a limb an were serving a cold meat salad. I have had them before and am not against them. But the lamb fat just is not so good cold. \r \r Second course was citrus rissoto. AGAIN cold, it was put on a cold dish that just saped the food of its heat. I thought it was just simple citrus rissoto but aparently there were supposed to be porcini in there. Dont recall seeing any.\r \r Third course pork loin, not cold but getting there. was not very flovorfull either. \r \r The food was cooked well and i think the flavor would have been there if it was hot when it arrived at our table. My girlfriend thought the same thing. She had the one hot item the Manicoti, just lacked flavor though.\r \r We were presented with some quite nice wines, not all that well paired but nice to drink so it was fine.\r \r The service was prompt, knowlegable and friendly \r \r The place has a great vibe. Overall enjoyed myself except when i got the bill. (i knew it was comming)\r \r Come on Citrus Rissoto course for a 50 dollar tasting menu. I'm thinking 25 cents for a 10 dollar course.\r .\r I might consider giving them a second try but would only go in for and entree and glass of wine. 100 per person wine and courses not worth the money. Pros: Service, ambiance Cons: tasting menu not worth the money, Cold Plates For Hot Food (come on) may be worth just going in for an entree and glass of wine more

Fabulous wines; Food uninspiring 2/11/2009

The restaraunt has all the makings for a fine dining experience: interesting entrance (through the kitchen); small intimate setting; tasting menu; wonderful wine options; and a knowlegable courteous staff. The food did not meet our expectations (which, to be fair, were high). We selected the tasting menu, and there was not a single course that was memorable. One of the dishes--sardines draped over potatoes--was not only visually unappealing, but the smell was overwhelming...(and we're not lightweights.). The short ribs were so fatty that we found only two small bites of meat in the entire dish. The pasta dish was just good, not great--it lacked depth of flavor in the sauce. Perhaps we dined at the restaurant on a night when the chef was ""off""...but based on our experience, there are restaraunts in Portland with much more inspired food (Le Pigeon, for example). The staff was very good; and the wine pairing with the tasting menu was great. We won't return...but others have really enjoyed this location, so perhaps we merely were there on an off night? Pros: Wine list; ambiance; service Cons: food more

Wonderful experience 10/4/2008

Great wine list that is very reasonably priced, the quality and freshness of the food was unsurpassed. Poached tuna starter, beef cheeks with melon, perfectly cooked porcini-pancetta risotto, wonderful lamb shamk with sweet and sour husk tomato relish, OH AND THE RABBIT KIDNEYS. Wonderful preparation of such an under utlized part with dandelion greens, fresh shell beans and ciopolinni onions. Two thumbs way up....... Pros: Food and wine oriented Cons: cant think of any more
