Southern Comfort! 5/21/2006

If you’re looking for southern comfort food—this is it! The setting reminds you of local place along the Louisiana bayou serving traditional Cajun and Creole dishes. My personal preference is more along the “down south” Georgia kind of southern food. I generally start with the fried green tomatoes and peach chicken wings, followed up with fried catfish fillets and greens. However, I’m not excited about their peach cobbler because I’ve had better, but they have a peach smoothie, served in a jar, that you’ll love. My advice, prepare to wait whenever you go because this place is always packed! If you’re looking for a simple place with good food at modest prices—you’re search is over. 5225 South Harper www.dixiekitchenchicago.com more

Dixie Kitchen 4/29/2006

Dixie Kitchen serves some pretty tasty soul food at reasonable, though not fantastic, prices. Vegetarians beware, everything from the greens to the beans has plenty of ham in it. The johnny cakes that they give you while you're waiting are delicious. more

Great Southern cooking! 8/4/2005

A gem in Hyde Park! Once you make your way up the maze of staircases, you'll find a delightful trip down South. The decor is like being in a charming Southern kitchen, complete with old stove, authentic ads from the south and checkered table clothes. The menu is short and simple: catfish (fried, grilled or blackened), jambalaya, gumbo, chicken-fried steak and blacked or grilled chicken breast are the mainstays. The sides are great too: red beans & rice, greens, corn, mashed sweet potatoes and black-eyed peas. Careful: the fried-green tomatoes are spicy, as are the peach-glazed chicken wings. If you have room for dessert, the peach cobbler is great! more
