I've had a love/hate relationship with Din Ho over the years. Their BBQ is so good and the rest of their dishes were decent, but their service was horrible. However, years ago, th...

This IS Chinese food 6/24/2006

Tell the waiter everything that you want and need when s/he takes order--they become scarce thanks to the large dining area filled with patrons. Not a romantic place in the traditional sense, but if you and your date enjoy experimenting and trying new places, then this is the place for you! CRAB MEAT WITH FISH MAW soup has a clean and oceanic taste (the ""fish maw"" is the swim bladder of a fish). BBQ PORK AND ROAST DUCK is a real treat, but know beforehand that duck is quite fatty. BEEF WITH CHINESE BROCCOLI is delicious--the Chinese broccoli does not have a bushy head like the vegetable most are familiar with. Pros: Authentic Chinese (via Hong Kong) food Cons: Service, ambience is not romantic (in traditional sense--dark lights, etc.) more

the best Chinese food in Austin 6/22/2006

My Dad's family is all Chinese, so I know a thing or two about Chinese home cooking. This place has everything you could want, even a pretty tasty sesame chicken for your Americanized Chinese food fans. For those in search of authentic Chinese, order the gai lan, any of the clay-cooked dishes, and roast duck and pork. The wonton soup is phenomenal, with shrimp-packed dumplings in a positively ethereal chicken broth with ginger. Love the food, ignore the shoddy decor and curt service. Pros: awesome food, fair prices, to-go orders are fast Cons: can be crowded and noisy more

Austin's best Chinese food, hand's down! 6/19/2006

I grew up in South East Asia and Din Ho is the only place in town that totally satisfies my Chinese food craving! Sure the service is not great (tho' there are several courteous wait staff - they're not all bad), the floors eternally sticky, and don't peer under the furniture if you know what's best for you... :) But we eat there at least 2-3 times a month and we've never gotten sick off the food, which is more than I can say for many other restaurants.\r \r The Sizzling Beef is my husband's favorite. Mine has got to be the Won Ton Noodle Soup (you actually get large chunks of shrimp in your wontons). A few other staples are the Roasted Duck, BBQ Pork (Char Siu), Walnut Shrimp, the Stirfried Snow Pea Leaves and the Fried Flat Noodle. But really, we have never had anything bad here, and it's not overtly salted or MSG laden like many other places. And the prices are of course the other good reason to go!\r \r Anyway, think 'typical' Chinese restaurant which is a bit loud, a bit unkempt, a bit lacking in service... keep an open mind and check Din Ho out for their exceptional food! more

Great Food 5/11/2006

This is truly the place for Excellant Chinese. Oh sure the service lacks and the place could use a good cleaning, but the Food is Fresh and as real as you get here in Austin. Try the Walnut Shrimp for a spectacular taste treat. The Sesame Chicken was also noteworthy. more

Good...for AUSTIN 5/4/2006

Like the title says. I'm from Houston (great Chinatown), and I'm Chinese, so of course I'm a little picky about these things. But it's definitely the best I've had, since I'm not very fond of Americanized-Chinese. The service is rather bad though; I don't know if it's because we're only college kids or what, but they were a little rude to me and my friends. Pros: good food Cons: bad service more

Best in Town 2/18/2006

I have been to Din Ho several times and have never been let down. There's an absolutely HUGE selection of food to choose from, and the best part is that they're open until 1am. If you haven't had authentic Chinese food (probably the majority of Austin) you will be in for a pleasant surprise. The food and ambiance made me feel like I was back in New York's Chinatown Pros: Authenticity, Price, Selection Cons: Not 24 hours more

Consistently delicious 1/31/2006

I've been to Din Ho a bunch of times and almost everything I've had has been delicious. Some particular favorites are the beef with chinese broccoli - the beef is always tender, the broccoli is always fresh, and it's served in an understated gingery sauce that's a nice complement - and the chicken crab corn soup. That they're open late is a big plus, as is the fact that take-out orders are always prepared swiftly. Pros: great food, open late, quick takeout more

As close to china as you can get in Austin 9/3/2005

I lived in China for many years and Din Ho is as close to taste, service everything that a 5 star restaurant in China has. I went with my wife a couple weeks ago and we have been going every other night since then. Highly recomended. 5 STARS Pros: Great Food, Great Setting, Great Price Cons: none, none, none more

Authentic Chinese in Austin! 8/30/2005

This is perhaps the best place to find authentic Chinese food in Austin. I love it here, and it's nice and cheap! I don't think you can find better Chinese food anywhere else. If you like Americanized Chinese food then this is not the place for you. more

The service stinks, but the food is good 8/15/2005

Service sucks...Although I go there alot. The food is awesome, but the service absolutely sucks. My drinks never get filled unless I ask them too. I always wave someone over to take my order. No service good food. Now I normally order pickup. Saves me 5 bucks on tip everytime. more

Not Recommend 6/20/2005

The service there was very horrible. The people there were so rude, and they didn't seem to care at all for the customers. The food there was not as good as expected. As Chinese BBQ goes, it was dry. It was definitely not one of the best Chinese food I have tried in Austin. Pros: No Wait Cons: Bad Service, Low Quality Food more

best BBQ duck in the world 3/29/2005

I've had chinese BBQ duck in Vancouver, Toronto, London, England, Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore, Deauville, France and I believe the BBQ duck at Din Ho is the best I've ever tasted. Pros: good parking, great food, good prices Cons: hard to get to more

Good food but.... 6/19/2003

It's probably the typical chinese restaurant you can ever find... kindda remind me of Wong Kei in London (for those who have been to London). The food is excellent, worth for the money, though the service can be improved but I would strongly suggest to keep that non-smiling flavour... that's how chinese restaurant should be like.... concentrate on the taste and service without a smile... at first I was angry but come on, don't you think those waiters in Wong Kei in London are far worst? They threw your dishes and splashed on you! And they demanded a tip from you... but their food is great!!! I would recommend Din Ho to those who love chinese food at its best, but you may find better ones in Houston, LA, New York, San Francisco...., but if you are in AUstin, get real! more

Great!!!!! 6/8/2003

One of the best chinese restaurants in Austin. The food is always delivered so piping hot that it is sometimes difficult to take a bite right away. The menu is large and prices are very reasonable. Pros: Fast service, fresh, inexpensive more

This place has the best chinese food in austin! Just look at all the chinese ppl in here.. thats all you need to know when you go eat at a chinese restaurant.. if its packed with white ppl.. u know its some americanized non chinese food. more

one of the best in Austin 1/22/2003

This place is GREAT! I eaten at a lot of Chinese resturant, heck, I worked at one for three and a half years and this one is my favorite. Maybe I just haven't found a better one. PFwho? When you go to an ethnic restaurant and 99% of the people there are of that ethnicity, you know it's got good food! Pros: the FOOD!, the soups! more

Decent 1/7/2003

I've been to Din Ho a lot and I just decided to post my review. This restaurant is probably the top 5 Chinese restaurant in Austin. No, it is no where near Houston's Chinese restaurant level, but is a decent restaurant. Their BBQ and hotpot is pretty good. Turn off is the rice. They must use cheap old rice. Everytime I eat rice, I notice that it is extremely dry. When I took it home and microwaved it, it tasted like paper. Pros: BBQ Cons: Service, Rice more

Authentic 12/27/2002

Barbeque! Chinese! Authentic! Forget the sesame chicken! This is the real stuff. Abandon the white, southerner mentality and really enjoy! Get your fingers greasy. I love the large TV in the corner! Pros: Authentic, Dungeness Crab, Roast Pork Cons: Too far from my house more

The best barbeque! 12/21/2002

We loved the sesame chicken, crispy chunks of chicken in a sweet sesame sauce, and the fried rice packed with pieces of roast pork. They do their own bbq'd meats and duck, it's amazing! Pros: Food quality, Friendly staff, Authentic chinese Cons: Open a NW place too! more

excellent 11/9/2002

This restaurant is one of my very best favorites. I recomend the orange chicken. I also recommend the water spinach. The food is so good that it actually melts in your mouth. The chef's are very skilled and the food, well you can taste the originality. more
