Our GO-TO Breakfast Place 5/3/2011

We have been frequenting Detour for years and enjoy almost everything there is about this quaint diner. The breakfast sandwiches are amazing and there soups are to die for. The waitstaff is pleasant and we like the fact you get to pour yourself coffee at your leisure. What sets this place apart is the care that is taken in preparing their food, it is delicious and looks that way as well. GO you will not be disappointed. more

mediocre at best 9/6/2009

if i wanted to wait on myself i would have stayed at home. coffee is self serve. actually, this might be a plus considering our waitress stopped by the table all of once and that was to take our order. the french toast is water flavored. cherry topping was good though. egg sandwich is ok but nothing to write home about. won't be going back here anytime soon. Pros: easy parking Cons: nats more

Deliculous Detour 6/19/2009

I eat at the Detour at least twice a month for late weekend breakfasts, and have never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a table. Never had any trouble getting a cup of coffee, never had bad vibe or poor service (actually always been great.) My girlfriend and I nominate the lovely lady with the collarbone-ringing and wrist tattoos as the most attractive waitress in the city. Always have the skillets with sunny side eggs on top, but everything I have had has been good. Great fresh made food and the snobs can go somewhere else while we languish in cozydom. Pros: GREAT FOOD GREAT PEOPLE GREAT SERVERS Cons: catching the bathroom open is the only tough thing more

Delicious French Toast 1/31/2009

I love having breakfast out and had read about Detour Cafe, so I stopped in yesterday morning right after they opened. Very clean, a little cold inside, but nice feel. I ordered the French Toast made from cardamom bread, had some cherry compote and shaved almonds on top, syrup on the side. Wow, great flavor, hot and the plate was warm, too, so you don't feel like you have to inhale it. I also ordered a side of bacon, crispy. It didn't come that way, but the waitress was great about running it back to the kitchen and getting it back to me quick. Hope I'm in the area again; it's worth the trip! Pros: Good coffee, good service, great food. Cons: A little cold inside more

terrible service 9/28/2008

Saturday morning, and it was not busy. Every table taken but no one waiting. First time going and waited ten minutes for a waitress to tell us that coffee is self serve but GOOD LUCK FINDING A CUP! I was appalled! Food came 45 minutes later after three other tables around us that sat down after got their food. French toast with so called cherry compote...it was dried cherries (gross!) thrown on top. Don't let the words of good food be ruined by this joint. This place needs to get it together. Not recommended if you are looking for quality or good service. :( more

Great food and fun location! 8/6/2008

I have been eating here since 2005 and really love the food and vibe here... Unfortunately the service can be below average at times, which can be a struggle like many have said. I guess you could say it's hitt or miss with service and epic food everytime!! Hopefully they read this and make some necessary changes. Pros: Local Organic Food!! Cons: service lacking... more

One good omelet 11/23/2007

I had a three-egg frittata with smoked salmon, spinach and roasted onions (onions are free!), which came with potatoes and cardamom toast. I also had a house salad. It was all immensely enjoyable. And the service was fine. more

i cant believe it didnt make the top 10 list... 11/19/2007

but then, thats ok. more for us! there are definitely die-hard detour fans out there. it is the best place, ive been going there for 4 years and it never gets old. their food is local, organic, breads are made from scratch everyday, and its simple whole food. i tried the potato leek soup another reviewer spoke of - i can see how one may not like it, but i thought it was unique and delectable. Pros: organic, local food, fresh baked goods more

Bad Food and Service 11/11/2007

I ordered the Soup and Salad, and upon receiving the food I didn't find the soup to my liking. I didn't know a bad Potato Leek Soup could be made, but this was awful and consisted mostly of oil. I waited and waited for the server to come back to see how things were, but she never did. When someone else finally came, they just dropped off the check, with all the plates and food still on the table. I had to go up to the server and tell her I was unhappy with the meal and she refuse to take off more than a dollar for the entire meal. This was an extremely negative experience and I left hungry. Pros: Outside seating nice Cons: Loud traffic and bad service more

Great food, disgruntled servers 11/2/2007

My family enjoyed everything here except for the service. The server interrupted my wife with a ""hold on a minute!"" retort while examining the check for a discrepancy. She tried to clean up her mess by being honey sweet afterwards. Still, I've never heard of such poor customer relations. I suggest requesting a new server if you happen to sense the one who served my familly will be taking care of your family. Pros: Good food Cons: Inconsistent server professionalism more

always consistently great ! 10/20/2007

my wife and i have been here many times and the food and service are always consistently great. the servers never give you that i'm-too-cool-for-school attitude that you can get at other restaurants. i have tried a few different things on the menu but i always go back to the boys upstairs (sausage sandwich) while my wife always get the original (minus the bacon). seriously, we have yet to have a bad meal here. while i was there earlier today i asked the cook (who i see there every time) if this was his joint and he replied yes, that he and his wife own it. i told him how much i loved it and he was genuinely appreciative and thanked me. the detour is near the top of our favorite restaurants in portland ! Pros: great food and service Cons: too small, they need to expand ! more

Great frittatas 4/15/2007

Detour's specialties are its egg frittatas (build your own) and egg sandwiches. My 3-egg frittata with smoked salmon, spinach, herb cream cheese and roasted onions came with rosemary potatoes and cardomom toast on the side. My friend commented that the vegan sausage in her egg sandwich was really good. And, both our meals came to under ten dollars with Stumptown coffee included. On the down side, we had to go to the counter to ask for service, then waited about 40 minutes for our meal (on a Sunday about 11 a.m. to be fair). I'd recommend it if you like eggs for breakfast and don't mind a wait if there's good coffee. Also, the front patio would be a great place to eat on a nice day. Pros: egg dishes, good value Cons: poor service more

Yeah, go here, don't listen to these other dolts. 3/5/2007

Detour is great. To comment on others' reviews, THEY BAKE THEIR BREAKFASTS' of course it's going to take longer!!!! So shut up you picky jerks Pros: delicious, not slammed, casual Cons: too full when I leave more

DO NOT GO HERE 2/15/2007

They are the slowest cafe/restaurant I have EVER been to, it takes an hour to get an egg sandwich. The staff are rude as hell and they hate kids!!!! Overall Detour cafe has been the worst dining experience I have ever had. more

One of PDX's best-kept secrets 5/8/2006

The food is top-notch, they serve Stumptown coffee, it's staffed by its owners and it's good for kids. When I see the lines and lines of people waiting hours for breakfast at that other joint on Division, I have to laugh -- those jokers have no idea what they're missing. Rock on, Detour. Pros: Great specials, Cubano sandwich, outdoor seating Cons: Can get crowded more

Don't Go! 4/21/2006

I never got to taste the food. I put in my order, got some coffee and proceded to wait OVER 40 MINUTES. (Mind you, I was a party of 1 and there were about 5 other people in the restaurant). Just as I was getting up to leave, the waitress (who hadn't approached my table since taking my order) came to ask me if I had received my food. She was the waitress; she should have known the status of my order! She half-assedly ""apologized"" as I was leaving. My experience was terrible and I will never go there again. more

Sandwiches 12/4/2005

they use sweet potato foccacia, i think. the texture is spongey and there seems to be an olive-oil slickness on the side salad that ends up saturating your sandwich, but the sandwices are so good you CANNOT stop coming back. and when you order an iced espresso drink they have ""simple syrup,"" which is sugar that's been boiled to a syrup, so that you don't have to stir and stir and stir those sugar crystal you get in packet form that won't melt. AWESOME. Pros: simple syrup, menu, music Cons: cold, small, music more

I used to hate eggs, not anymore! 7/23/2005

This place is great! Homemade bread, veggie options,(great veggie sausage)Watermelon mimosas! Delicious pizzas! My wife and I eat here at least once a week. They use cage free eggs, and the egg sandwiches are beyond awesome. I may sound like an infomercial but I mean every word! Oh, and the staff is the best, sooo nice. Pros: food, staff, food more

Deee lish! 5/27/2004

My first time eating at the Detour I was confused by the menu. The fritata's and potato scrambles force you to choose your own ingredients from a list of around 20 different vegetables, meats, and cheeses. This is not beneficial when you're having a hung over breakfast and your mind is not firing all pistons. Plus, no straight forward eggs, hashbrowns, bacon and toast classic American plates. Instead they have egg sandwiches. Confusing at first, but delicious in the end. I've since been back 6 or 7 times and it's become my favorite breakfast eatery in this part of town. My only beef after getting to know this place is that you have to walk to the counter to refill your coffee. Small price to pay for a very satisfying meal provided by a great staff. Outside seating is a huge plus. I have yet to try any lunch items. Pros: All coffee drinks, Beer!, Outside seating Cons: , No liquor :(, One bathroom more

Recommended for sure 9/8/2003

I just went for breakfast, and the fritatas were great. I had a sauasage combo one and my friend opted for a combo with salmon and cheese. They were both reallly excellent, hot and flavorful. The coffee, potatoes, and toast were all top notch. On separate occaision I came in and got a spinach salad that was also great. Anyone looking for a new breakfast/lunch place, give this place a try. I know I will be back! Pros: Food, Neat interior, Nice folks Cons: Small tables more
