Best

First of all I would like to say that if I lived closer to Derek's I would eat there every night. I only eat whole organic foods and Derek's is one of the only places around tha...

Worst

I have been a lunch-time regular here for quite some time, and don't understand the rave reviews. On any given weekend, the staff is inattentive, the menu a bore and if you are u...

My New Spot! 11/18/2005

First off, any bar that is non-smoking is right for me. I love the fact that i can hang all night, watch sports, and then go home and not smell like cigarette smoke! I think that this place has it all for me. I can have a burger or pizza at the bar, or have a four course dinner in the beautiful dining room. The people are a bit older and more sophisticated than the rest of Main Street.[Have they gotten younger, or are we just getting older?] I dig the small plate menu and am so happy that I can sample many things and not be overwhelmed by so much food. The waitresses are also pretty hot, a bonus! Pros: non smoking, huge wine list, very freindly Cons: crowded more

Derek's - A scene not a restaurant 11/13/2005

We found Derek's to be quite disappointing. It's very crowded and noisy and is more of a scene than a restaurant. The food was average overall. $16.95 for 2 small lamb chops was overpriced and the whole grilled fish for $24.95 was bland and tasteless. The bread basket was completely burnt and should have never been served. Then there's the ridiculous ""half-price"" wine list! The bottle of Jumilla we had was listed at $52 and then ""discounted"" to $26. This is an $8 bottle of wine so the mark-up was still over 300%! Some discount. The waiter brings the wine and nearly empties the entire bottle into our glasses! Then the overflow crowd at the door is standing in front of our booth as we eat, how private and romantic! Derek's has potential but if you want serious dining then go somewhere else. Pros: Can watch TV? Cons: Very noisy, Overpriced, Average food more

FANTASTIC 10/24/2005

My wife and I had some out of town guests so we decided to take them into Manayunk when we came across Derek's. We stopped in for drinks and wound up staying for dinner. The food was outstanding. I highly recommend the shrimp ravioli and lamb chops. Make sure you leave room for dessert. Our sever was terrific and let us know about the "half price" wine list. We tried an awesome sauvignon blanc for under $30. Our friends can't wait to come back and visit. I almost forgot the best part, the entire restaurant and bar is smoke free!!! Pros: music videos, non-smoking, great service more

DEREK! WHAT DID YOU DO? 8/25/2005

My wife and I usually go to Sonoma's during August on our wedding anniversay and my birthday which was last night. Upon arrival, it just wasn't right. Now, it's Derek's Sonoma, a loud, uninhabitable place where you take your chances. It was crowded, loud and the food left much to be desired. As a well-renowned caterer in Philly, we know good food and attention to detail. Derek's lacks both. The waiter either did not know what he was doing or he didn't know what he was doing (or maybe he did not care). The food was sub-par, the liquor was missing in our drinks (:{) and the ambiance was atrocious. If you want to go to a place where you rather be heard and don't care about the food or service, I strongly recommend going to Derek's Sonoma. Last night was our swan song. Sonoma - WE MISS YOU!! more

You Gotta Go! 11/15/2004

The first time I went to Sonoma our group was seated outside the restaurant in a romantic atmosphere (with white lights surrounding the table). Our group consisted of 7 people, ages ranging from 20 to 65. The service was excellent along with the varitey of food. (By the way I must recommend the chicken sandwich with sauteed muchrooms and peppers..for less than $7!) While we were there, the manager approached us and asked us for feedback on our visit...and he rewarded us with a sample of "twisted teas" that were not even on the menu. The only thing I would change would be the proximity of the tables. I have been there approximately 6 times since this initial visit and I have never found my opinion to vary. Sonoma defintely lives up to their slogan "Manayunk is the place to drink. Sonoma is the place to go to eat." Pros: Atmosphere, Service, Food/Price Cons: , Not child-friendly more

Stay Away!! 9/25/2004

By far one of the worst dining experiences in near memory! Everything was a complete disappointment. Our waitress, the food, and the prices. The asian beef salad I ordered had very little beef in it, substituted angel hair pasta for what was advertised as ""vermicelli"", and was drowned in very oily dressing. It took more than a half hour to get any food, and the waitress's continous promises that it ""would be out in two minutes, promise"" were clearly based on nothing other than her own wishful thinking. Avoid at all costs. Cons: , Service, Price more

Great place to dine 8/7/2003

I generally don't like to eat in Manayunk or the other city hotspots, but a friend was in from out of town and wanted to try it because of the grass-fed beef and the half-price wine (by the bottle) on Sundays. Service was prompt and the waiter was very knowledgeable. One of the wines we wanted was out of stock and the waiter went to another restaurant (under the same owners) to see if they had it. They did not, but he recommended an excellent substitute. The food we ordered was delicious and was served promptly. Prices are very reasonable for the quality. The tables are small and close together and we were near the kitchen so it was noisy, but not annoyingly so. Parking in Manayunk is always in short supply, but there is a lot a short distance away. I will go there again. Pros: Attentive service, Delicious food, Good wine selection Cons: Small tables, Noisy, Location more
