Everything you heard or read about this place is true. Great pizza.

How this place continues to be rated best pizza on SI is beyond me. Joe & Pat's is way better all around. Yes, it's a different style of pizza but taste is taste. I guess at $11 a...

Great pizza, WORST SERVICE 8/18/2011

love the pizza but cannot stand to receive horrible waitress service. They are disrespectful, never say thank you or you're welcome, toss pizza on table, put check on table with their back to you. Total opposite of their service years ago. Sucks that people like being treated Ike sh-t and continue to patronize the establishment. And to mrsouthshore, it's all mexicans in denino's kitchen.... Try pizza d'oro on Richmond avenue and victory boulevard for good service, cheap pizza and it's good!! $13 gets you a large pie and pitcher of soda. Trust me, you will go back before saying the dirty 'd' word on port Richmond ave. more

great! 7/14/2010

I love it when a place has real italians cooking the food it taste italian! not like other places with under cooked pies. Albanins and mexicans try but this place is italian american first place! Pros: family place Cons: no parking more

Excellent Pizza! 5/27/2010

Found this gem of a place from a google search on my iphone. I just finished the FIVE BORO BIKE TOUR and wanted to find a decent place for some good pizza. This place had about 39/40 great reviews and I was definitely not disappointed. After being raked over the coals for average food in Manhattan it was a welcomed reprieve. It's a nice quant tavern with a pizzeria in the back and no nonsense service. Most of the people seemed like locals and the place had a real nice family feel to it. If you like fresh delicious pizza then this place delivers. The price was great especially for NY standards. No hype just it just delivers. Across the street there's a ice cream stand that is just as good. I think it was called Ralph's. GO you won't be disappointed. Can't wait to go again. Pros: food, price, portions, casual dining Cons: waitress was okay but not too attentive more

GREAT FOOD, WORST WAITRESS 11/21/2009

Unbelievably, other tables came and went before we even got our 1 appetizer of fried calamari. Then other tables came and went before we got our two pies. I was thisclose to leaving NO TIP but I decided to ask another waitress if they pool tips. They do pool tips, so I left 20%, otherwise I would have left nothing for Carla our waitress. I have never had such horrible service, but please note that the other waitresses were doing a great job. Great food. I would definitely go back, but if Carla waits on us, I'd have to politely ask for another waitress. Pros: FOOD Cons: WAITRESS AND WAIT more

Very nice pie.... 6/12/2009

I've been here twice and thought it was great both times. Would definatly go back. The pies always come out quick ard are perfectly cooked. Pros: Great Crust more

Just okay 3/29/2009

How this place continues to be rated best pizza on SI is beyond me. Joe & Pat's is way better all around. Yes, it's a different style of pizza but taste is taste. I guess at $11 a pie it's a bargain these days. Salvatore of Soho on Hylan has an excellent coal fired pie too. $18 for the pie but a delicious pie. Pros: Good crust Cons: Too much cheese, not enough sauce.. Mediocre taste more

Poor pizza 2/3/2009

It was our first (and last) time there. The place was jammed and this seemed to jive with the "legend" that they had fantastic pizza. It was a long wait for our table. The green salad was very generous in size and fresh . We ordered two pies, a sausage/meatball and a mushroom/onion; they were terrible. There was barely any flavor, the entire crust was over cooked to a hard crisp and ingredients appeared to be used very sparingly. We debated sending them back but the pies on nearby tables appeared to be in the same shape and we were not hopeful for a significant improvement. The waitress had no problem getting us $drinks$ but took forever with 2 reminders to get us water. Perhaps they were legends in their time but that time has passed. Pros: Generous fresh garden salad Cons: bad pizza, long wait, difficult parking more

Dont waste your time 10/3/2008

I dont know what all the rave is about or who is responsable for it but this place aint that good. The crust is raw a disgusting. The sauce is ok the cheese is typical. I ordered the pizza well-done because I noticed the pizza's being brought to other tables were undone and "raw". Well when ours came out it still wasnt cooked right. I wanted to send it back but the waitress said I would still have to pay for this pizza and she just rambled on how the pizza maker wouldnt be able to cook it any more or else he might burn it. This is the one of the worst pizza's on Staten Island. Pros: NONE Cons: The food and the service more

Taste like nothing else! 10/28/2007

Pizza is excellent, services is great along with the prices. The little old lady Rose is the sweetest thing ever and has been there for 80 something years, but watch out for the owners wife. She has a really bad attitude. The owner should really tell his wife to stay home. Overall the place is outstanding! Pros: Great Food Great Services Great Prices Cons: Parking, owners wife is a real B*tch more

Good, but overrated 6/13/2007

I'm a lifelong Staten Islander, and I love food second only to my girlfrind and my parents - LOL! I developed a taste for such critters as crabs, squid and even escargot (SNAILS!) and when I was only about 7! But I never got to Denino's until recently and wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Both my lady (who's from Brooklyn and also knows more than a thing or two about quality pizza and Italian food) went recently and came away with the same impression - at least this particlur visit, anyway: certainly better than many pizzas on the Island, but also very overhyped. The crust was crispy and great, but the toppings were kind of average to us. Very good sauce - but just not enough of it, and the same overly salty-tasting processed cheese typically used everywhere else unless you request a fresh mozzarella or margarita pie (Like Valducci's on AMboy Road). I'm not saying we didn't like it - it was very tasty. But, pizza this heavily-hyped should feature chunks of fresh san marzano tomatoes (like Naples 45 in the city), fresh basil and homemade mozzarella akin to what a fine restuarant would produce versus a run-of-the-mill pizza joint #1000 would make. If you want truly great and unique pizza, Joe & Pats on Vicory Blvd near Manor Road is worlds better in this regard. Joe & Pats' crust is much thinner and crispier, yet neither flops over nor is too brittle, and is smothered in truly frsh, homemade-tasting tomato sauce (sweet, chunky and rich with a palpable extra virgin oil taste) and generous but not overdone splotches of fresh mozzarella. Bottom line: Quite good, but just not the 'greatest=on-the-planet' standout everyone makes it out to be... Pros: Good crust, tasty sauce - excellent mozzarella sticks! - very inexpensive Cons: Not enough sauce, Salty processed cheese you get anyewhere else, bad parking more

GREAT PIZZA! 11/7/2005

Awesome pizza, though the service could use a little bit of help. I would like to go there every week, but I'll get FAT!! It's worth the wait, but that's becasue the place is very popular. Besides, there's a cd jukbox, a bar and they're always showing the local teams on the tv's. more

The best pizza pie 10/4/2005

I am absolutely amazed at how perfect the crust on this pie is made. For a serious fan of thin slice pizza, Denino's tops everyone in and around NYCNY. We ordered a sauage and pepper pie and 2 of us at the whole huge thing. It was spectacular. The night before I unloaded 70 bucks for an awesome meal, but this pizza pie at Denino's will forever stay in my memory as the best damned pizza around. Pros: sat down fast, the best crust, "in crust we trust" more

I FELL IN LOVE... 5/18/2005

WITH MY SWEETIE MARGARITA IN THERE..WHAT MORE CAN I SAY..THE PIZZA IS AWESOME AND THE HOT WINGS ARE DELICOUS! ON THE MONEY ! THIS OUT OF TOWNER TAKES TRIPS FROM OUT OF STATE JUST FOR ONE OF THEIR SLICES ! DENINOS # 1 HANDS DOWN ! Pros: ENVIRONMENT, HOT WINGS, FRESH SLICES Cons: NONE, BUT ONE, ONLY WITH MAG more

oh what a pie 6/15/2004

try denino's you'll be glad you did, in addition to the cold beer and outstanding pizza, you have to try thier fried calamari, best around, stop at world famous Ralph's Italian Ices across the street for dessert, go with the lemon! more

Fantastic pizza 6/14/2004

The Brick oven pizza is the best I've ever had. The simple setting is very family friendly. It's almost always crowded so get there early but the pizza is well worth the wait. Pros: Fantastic pizza, Good value, Friendly atmosphere Cons: , crowded, can be loud more

In Crust We Trust 5/5/2004

That's their motto and their claim to fame. The absolutely BEST pizza crust in New York City and possibly the world. Our babies teethed on that crust and so have loved Denno's almost since birth. It's barroom pizza, no yuppie goat cheese and watercress concoctions - just a premium crust topped with the standard favorites. Will DeNino's be voted NUMBER ONE? No. Staten Island's population is dwarfed by the other boroughs. We don't have enough voters to win. But in a taste-test competition, Denino'w would win hands down. Pros: Great pizza, Good bar crowd, Nice family service Cons: , Long wait sometimes, No salad! more

WORTH THE TRIP 12/11/2003

I traveled 1000 miles to visit relatives on Staten Island AND stop by for a Denino's Pizza....it was worth it, very, very good pizza! more

Overrated 10/19/2003

This pizzeria/bar is extremely over rated. Pizza is usually burned and laden with cheese oil. In my opinion, current Staten Island Food critics need to get off the island a little more. Pros: Cheap Cons: Mediocre Food, Overcrowded, Poor Parking more

DeNino's Rules! 8/8/2003

Simply the best pizza in and around Staten Island! IF you can get a parking space and IF you can get a table in a timely manner, you're fortunate. If not, it will be well worth the wait! more

  • Denino's has been a gathering place for families and friends all these many wonderful years. Rest assured we will continue the same tradition of quality family dining in our new Brick, New Jersey location. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Carlo Denino's passing.

Editorial
  • The Scene
Run by the original founders and their descendants since 1937, this working-class tavern caters to people on and off Staten Island, including Brooklynites and folks from Bayonne, a short bridge ride away. Families abound, often with small children in tow. Decor is strictly utilitarian, and service--most likely by a member of the extended family--is friendly, brisk but unhurried.

    The Food
Oh, what a pie! Dissect the 16-inch plain rounds, and every component measures up: the thin yet supportive bread-dough crusts, tangy rich red sauce and cheese so gooey it oozes right off the edges of the pan. If you go for toppings, sausage is a good choice, as are a springtime bounty of fresh, crisp vegetables. Or opt for a white pie: sauceless cheese over a layer of sweet onions, sprinkled with olive oil. The restaurant serves heros and platters as well, but face it: You're here for the pizza.
