NO SERVICE NO AMBIANCE! 1/4/2012

This was one of the worst experiences i have ever had! We made reservations at Citrus for New Years Eve for 8pm. When we arrived we were told we were 'checked in' just notify them when everyone was there. The last person we who was missing was just parking the car. We were seated at 8:30pm in the basement where there was no decorations or ambiance. Literally felt like someone's house basement that we had been banished to. So much for getting dressed up to go out. We promptly ordered our drinks and food. Appetizers came out pretty fast (10 mins later), i would say they were pre-prepared as they were barely warm but not too bad. Then came the LONG wait. No one checked on us, more tables filled up as we sat waiting, they ate, they left and yet we still didnt have food. We ordered 2 sushi platters and 2 steamed bass, so nothing that needs time to cook. Finally we got a hold of the bus boy to ask what is going on and where our food is since our waiter disappeared as well. Needless to say he forgot to put in our order, not to mention our table entirely. Oh did i mention it was 10:15PM!!!!!!! So our waiter finally comes over, who is less than sincerely apologetic, blames his cook and expects us to wait even LONGER till it comes out! So as we are still waiting, we are getting more upset (and i do not know anyone who isn't extra grumpy on an empty stomach!). We decided that we do not want to wait for our meals and ask for the bill. He brings the bill, NO DISCOUNT, NO APOLOGY! We pay and leave at 10:45PM and are never going back! So much for a happy new year! CITRUS on the BANNED LIST! If you love food, spread the word and NEVER go to this place! more

Went there tonight with a group of friends. Our waitress was ""over"" us before she even took our order. Food was average...the greens to my salad were not fresh so I only at the chicken. Our waitress never came back to take an order for another round of drinks, never checked to see how our meals were and dropped the check before we could order dessert. There are many great restaurants in NYC. Sad to see that Citrus is no longer one of them. more

Uninspiring Cuisine and Service 12/12/2009

The cuisine is poorly executed. Sushi was okay but the entrees were all boring, flavorless and uninspiring thought they read well on the menu. Sushi was fine, but the server had no idea what soy paper was or Nori or the difference. Completely untrained on the menu and its ingredients which isn't his falut and is the sign of an operation that just doesn't care. Pros: Not much Cons: Pretty much everything more

Slipping a little 8/3/2009

Citrus is a ""go to"" place for my friends and I when we can't decide where to go for dinner or brunch and/or weren't up for crowded dining areas and long lines. We like that there's ample space and several great choices on the menu. I almost always order the Citrus Chopped Salad.\r \r This past Sunday a few friends and I went for brunch and I'm sad to say I was disappointed. The Citrus Chopped Salad was lacking in the wonderful toppings -pumpkin seeds, jicama, avocado, sweet potatos and manchego cheese - that make it so tasty and flavorful. There was barely any manchego on our salads and everything else was sparse. The moment we brought this to our waiter's attention he seemed to catch on immediately and it made me wonder if due to the economy, they have knowingly cut back on ingredients.....In any event, as always, the service was fantastic and our waiter brought us up cups of manchego and avocado to add to our plates of lettuce. Ultimately I had a pretty good chopped salad but I still elft feeling a bit disappointed over one of my favorite ""standys."" Pros: Good food, great service, nice large space Cons: Salad had a lot of lettuce and not a lot of anything else more

Citrus continues to disappoint (Upper West Side, NYC) 6/21/2009

Well it had been almost 2 years since I had last visited Citrus... I never found the service to be any good and the food was always average (even though the menu makes it sound fantastic)... Anyway, today - father's day - I decided to try it once again, as many of my first choices did not have tables available. Well I should have stayed home. Citrus disappointed once again. Not only was the food below average, the service was down right poor... only to be topped off by the fact that the manager on duty - Natalia - dropped my father's father day present - a collection of photos - all over the floor and didn't even have the sensibility to apologize. She left them there and moved on. \r \r Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. Pros: Nice Ambiance Cons: Poor Service, decent food more

bad service/obnoxious manager 5/21/2009

I went with two friends to what we thought was our local friendly restaurant, which we have been to many times. After waiting for an hour and a half (on a wait that we were told would be 45 minutes) they jammed us into a two person table and promised to ""take care of us."" Not only did they not take care of us (seriously, the manager, Natalia, did not do a single thing with respect to comping anything and was the single most unprofessional and rude restaurant manager that I have ever come across--actually despite her claim that she was, in fact, the manager, I tend to doubt it, since she looked like she just woke up and went to work in the clothes she slept in), but the wait staff was completely incompetent. Despite the food not being bad (it’s pretty mediocre), and I suggest you don't either.... more

You can do better 3/7/2009

The food is tasty, but the portions are small and the service is slow. The noise level on a weekend makes the jackhammers on a construction site seem quiet. This is definitely not a place where you would want to have a leisurely dinner, but it is close to the Beacon theatre, and not a bad place to go if you are not spending more than an hour. If you are not going to the Beacon, there are lots more restaurants to go to in NYC rather than this one. Pros: tasty food and good variety Cons: The noise level makes conversation difficult; small portions more

Used to be good 2/16/2009

I must have eaten here right when they opened. It was summer 2005 and I had a really good experience, from what I can recall. I had just flown in and a large group of us went on the later side to dinner there. I can't remember what I had, but the food was delicious and the drinks were also working. Sad to hear that things aren't the same now. Pros: Bustling, busy and hip in 2005 Cons: none that I can recall more

fun margaritas and interesting fusion foods 8/10/2008

The food here was really fun and interesting: spicey novel sushis, fun salads, and yummy tacos. We order a ton of margaritas in lots of fruit flavors and they were really fresh and fruity, like real fruit and fruit juices that were fresh, not frozen. Service was friendly and attentive. Love this place! Pros: drinks, fusion foods more

Rude and awful! 7/14/2008

My sister and I came here on Friday for dinner and drinks. It wasn't fairly busy but we were told there had to be an $18 minimum per person food charge to sit outside and if we sat inside we would each have to order an entree. My sister wasn't that hungry but was going to order an appetizer. I was definitely going to rder an entree. But we definitely would have ordered more than $18 per person in drinks! Regardless they wouldnt seat us. My sister decided to complain to the manager and when she did, he told her to leave! He didn't care that he was losing two customers but rathered we leave. This is not an upscale restaurant where I can justify wanting the customers to order entrees. It's a restaurant that has millions of others like it in this city and they have no right demanding customers to buy a certian amount of food. I urge you not to go! Pros: NOthing Cons: Everything more

Excellent for al fresco meals & drinks! 6/10/2008

I've been here a couple times, once for brunch, once for afternoon drinks & appetizers. Had a great experience both times! I really like the menu selections, as well as the interesting & fresh Latin twists in the dishes/drinks. The food is very good, not mind blowingly so, but tasty nonetheless. Awesome specialty drink selections! Be warned that drinks on the rocks tend to have A LOT of ice so ask for less/no ice...I finished my margarita in about 3 sips & opted to get a different drink w/ less ice so it'd last longer (a tall blueberry vodka concoction that my friend order, it was fabulous!). What I love the most is the menu offerings combined w/ the outdoor seating - one can sit outside here w/ friends, eating, drinking, chatting, relaxing, & really having a nice time. I know there are lots restaurants w/ al fresco dining but I've found myself here more than once after wandering about the UWS & have been very very pleased. I'm a bit disturbed by the review before mine & am sorry that happened to someone, but overall I have had nothing but good experiences here. Service is fine, prices a bit much but not unheard of for the area. I would dine/drink here again! Pros: Specialty drinks, appetizers, brunch Cons: A bit overpriced but hey it's the UWS... more

Management and Service AWFUL 5/18/2008

My friends and I stumbled upon what we thought was a nice place around 11pm on friday night. The manager was at the front door and said that the kitchen was still open. There were at least 10 tables available but they would not seat us. The manager said that we had to all be ordering an entree to sit down. We explained that 2 of us were ordering entree's, and 1 was ordering appetizers but we are all having drinks. This manager continued to refuse to seat us. We should have left at this point, but it was pouring out so we sat at the bar. We asked if there was table service there and the nasty hostess laughed, threw menus at us and walked away. We finally left. \r We are still disturbed about how we were treated. The manager is a homophobe and should be fired! more

Customer Service - F 4/5/2008

Citrus - it was my favorite for so long, Sunday brunch - couldn't live without it... not any more. The place has gone down hill. Trying to make a reservation for 6 people the other day the host, Evelyn, tells me sorry... no can do. Are you full I ask? No she says, with an attitude. Brunch is served, (didn?t have to wait so why couldn?t she mark us down?), I am out of water so I ask the waitress, can I please have some more? Sorry she says, you will have to ask the buss boy! What I am getting at is service and it seems Citrus is so full of itself these days that they don't want to properly serve their best customers anymore... let alone, even remember us. At the end of the day, the food is not that great so why even bother! Pros: close to my house Cons: awful service more

Yummy 11/6/2007

I was visiting the city from Nashville, and used citysearch to find somewhere to eat. I chose this place, because they seemed to offer a wide selection of flavors, between the sushi & the latin flavors.\r \r Overall it was a really good dining experience. My friend and I both ordered the Pomegranite-Ancho Chile glazed salmon, and we both substituted the mashed cauliflower for their sweet potatoes. The glaze & the salmon were perfect, and I think those were the best sweet potatoes I've ever had. I recommend it! Oh, and Crumbs is just across the street, so I consider that a plus! Pros: Easy to reach/find location for us, as we aren't locals! more
