So I made a reservation... 5/9/2011

I've been going to Chile Verde for nearly 3 years as they're one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Columbus. On Cinco de Mayo I made a reservation for me and my special gal. When we arrived the place was crowded with people standing all over the place, it was obvious they were incredibly busy, which is to be expected on Cinco de Mayo. After the hostess greeted me I informed her I had a reservation for 6:30, she asked my name and then proceeded to locate it in the book. It was there. She then informed me my wait would be roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes. ""But you just crossed my name off the reservation list"", I exclaimed. She then told me that they don't have ""Reservations"" for parties of 2, they are considered ""call aheads"". However, when I called in to make my ""reservation"" I was not told it was a pretend reservation because I only had 2 people. I was led to believe that I did in fact have a reservation. They couldn't have been any less understanding or accommodating, they truly didn't care at all that I had been told I had a reservation. Anyway, by then it was too late and waits were 1 hour+ everywhere else, too. We ended up going to Chipotle and it was delicious :) I understand Chile Verde's situation was tough and the booth occupied by 2 people would spend less $ than a booth occupied by 4 or 5. It's a free market they made their choice. I too, will make mine; I will never again spend my hard earned money on Chile Verde's over-priced Chicken Fajitas! more

I Want to Love Chile Verde, BUT... 3/12/2011

I want to love Chile Verde. It is a cute little restaurant at the Carriage Place Plaza. I like the decor and it has nice atmosphere I've been there four or five times. I want to like it so much that every few years I give it another try. When I see them on the menu I I hope that the blue corn tortillas will be great. But frankly, I have always found the cuisine there to be mediocre. There is one exception to this. Occasionally they will have gazpacho on the menu. That is topnotch, but I'd have to eat several servings to feel like I've had a meal. I will probably continue to try the food every five years or so in hopes that it will someday live up to my expectations. more

Ok but not best 3/4/2010

Place is ok but nothing special.... there are 15 others just like it. Wish i could find awsome mexican restraunt... Pros: Chips and salsa more

Awesome food and Perfect Margaritas! 12/2/2009

They have awesome, fresh food. They people there are always friendly. They have the worlds best margaritas and they are kid friendly. You couldn't ask for more! A million times better than Taco Bell! Totally worth the price for amazing food, services and drinks! Pros: Wide Variety on menu including beverages and kids choices Cons: a little pricey..they charge for guac. and sour cream more

Best food in town 11/16/2009

food is always fresh, and hs great flavor in every bite. The offer the best margiritas in town. one of columbuses true hidden gems more

Awesome is the word for this restaurant 11/2/2009

We love everything on the menu. Anyone who compares this wonderful food to Taco Bell is nuts. Taco Bell uses dog meat. We want to thank everyone for the great service, wonderful menu and look forward to many more visits. Pros: My mom and I just love this restaurant. The food is so good more

NOT WORTH THE MONEY 8/2/2009

O VER 28.00 FOR ME AND MY HUSBAND FOR LUNCH 2 BEEF BURRITOS AND A BOWL OF SOUP AND WATER TO DRINK, I WILL HONESTY SAY TACO BELL TASTE BETTER THAN OUR MEAL. WE WILL NOT GO THERE AGAIN, SAVE 22.00 AND EAT AT TACO BELL. MAKES A BETTER CHOICE. Pros: NICE SERVICE Cons: VERY POOR TASTE OF FOOD more

Great margaritas and southwest cuisine 7/27/2009

From the owner to everyone else who works there, the service is amazing. Go a couple of times, and you are sure to meet the owner Tom who might be the nicest owner of a restaurant in town. The restaurant went through a renovation and doubled in size recently. They also added a chip warming machine and a glass chiller, so all of those reviews on cold chips can note that the owner listened! Love the margaritas, and the food. I know you will never please the folks who came to Ohio from the Southwest, but hey, I just moved from Ohio to Oregon and I can't find what I'm used to in Ohio here either. It's life. Pros: Drinks, just doubled the space of restaurant Cons: Not cheap, but worth it! more

Wonderful fajitas 5/23/2009

Fajita meat is excellent, service was wonderful -- salsa is chunkier than I would like but the main course more than made up for it. Pros: Fajitas, service, quality Cons: Salsa (for some) more

The best TexMex restaurant in town 2/17/2009

I typically dine out several times a week and my job requires to travel all over the country as well as overseas. That said, eating at Chile Verde is a staple for me. Whenever I am in town I always go to Chile Verde the first or second day I arrive. The food is superb and the service is outstanding. The variety is good and if you like hot/spicy food, I highly reccommend their green sauce. more

Great Fajitas 9/9/2008

Certainly not authentic Mexican cuisine, but they are better than El Vaqueros...the dishes are more interesting and have more flair, however, portions are smaller, and more expensive too. Appetizers arent cheap either...four very small one-bite crab cakes, $7.00.\r \r Complimentary chips and salsa are refrigerator cold. Not as appetizing as Vaqueros and Casa Fiestas, which served warmed chips. They also dont offer the 4-5 different hot-sauces on the tables. In fact, they offer any. When I asked for hot sauce, the waiter brought out some very slightly spicy salsa...certainly not hot, even by the most sensitive palate.\r \r I rated Verde as ""Recommended"" as opposed to ""Average"" because of their Fajitas. The marinated in honey and soy sauce (thats right, about as un-Mexican as it gets) chicken or beef are some of the best offered. The sugar in the honey caramelizes on the meat and vegetables, giving a great crunch, while the soy offsets the sweet perfectly. I highly recommend them.\r \r While not on my ""Must go again list"", I would visit again if I were in the area, and had Fajitas on the brain. Pros: Fajitas Cons: Value, location more

You want Mexican food? 6/18/2008

I would say this place has more Tex-Mex than authentic Mexican food, having lived in both California and Arizona. The best thing about this place is their delicious sopapillas. Many ""Mexican restaurants"" in Ohio know nothing about authentic beans, rice or pulled meat dishes. Not only does Chile Verde make a mean Aztec BBQ Burrito (it's mildly spicy and very delicious) but the sopapillas are the fried doughy kind, not the fried tortilla kind you find in many Mexican restaurants throughout the area. It's a smaller place, so it might be busy or you might have a minimal wait but it is certainly worth it. Enjoy! more

Overrated, In My Opinion 5/12/2008

I should preface this review by saying that I lived for a number of years in Arizona, where I routinely had FANTASTIC Mexican food. Ever since moving to Columbus, I've been looking for something that stacks up. And so, after seeing that Chile Verde Cafe won Citysearch's Best Mexican Food of 2007, I had to try it. In my opinion, it fell way short. I went for lunch and tried the BBQ fajita burrito, which many other reviewers have suggested. First of all, $10 for a burrito at lunchtime WITHOUT any rice OR beans on the side is way too much, but I was willing to try it anyway. I wasn't impressed. The quality of the meat was pretty poor, and I didn't care for the combination of sweet BBQ sauce and chile con queso topping the burrito. I realize that they were going for a ""sweet and spicy"" type of taste, but in the end, it just wasn't very good, at least according to my tastes. I barely finished my meal. On the other hand, my wife's tamale lunch was fairly tasty, and more reasonably priced, so the experience wasn't all bad. Perhaps it's unfair for me to compare Ohio Mexican restaurants with Arizona Mexican restaurants, but I have yet to find what I consider good Mexican food in Columbus. The search continues... more

best mexican 5/8/2008

This place is awesome. It is the first mexican place where I have taken one bite and been like WOW that's good. It beats the Don Pablos type of mexican food, this is the real deal. Pretty inexpensive too. Only downside really is the amount of seating, but honestly I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a table. Pros: good food, inexpensive Cons: small more

Avoid delivery through Cafe Courier 5/5/2008

We had a birthday at the office and decided to have lunch delivered through Cafe Courier.\r \r Our food arrived about the time it should and quickly we realize someone didn't receive part of their meal. We call back and they said they would take care of it. Then the same person found their taco to be mushy on the bottom and called back to complain because they couldn't eat it. The rest of us also noticed our meat was dry and the rest a bit soggy. We do not know who is at fault for these things.\r \r I would be willing to give the restaurant a try if I went to eat there for dinner but some of my co-workers said they would never eat there. How can you blame them? If they team up with Cafe Courier and then treat their ""to go"" as dispensable (by serving sub-standard quality food), does this mean they rely on the great margaritas and surroundings to make up for the bad food? Pros: Affordable lunch items, Delivered Cons: Dry meat, Soggy more

The best mexican 4/3/2008

Thankfully, not your typical Vaqueros. Innovative, great quality mexican. If I want mexican, this is where I go. I have never had bad service, or experience. Salsa is the best, and they have some of the best wraps you can get anywhere. Pros: Salsa, all the food, service Cons: Location. Small strip mall, and it fills up fast. more

Best Mexican Food in Town 3/29/2008

My family and I are Mexican food junkies - we ahve been to every Columbus restaurant, and we frequently vacaton in Sante Fe. Chile Verde is by far the best, most authentic Mexican food in Columbus. Nowhere else in Columbus can you dine, have made from scratch margaritas and blue corn enchiladas, and look up on the walls to see RC Gorman replicas. I truly feel like I am in the South when I eat there!!! Pros: RC Gorman replicas and blue corn tortillas Cons: Location - in a shopping plaza more

Best Mexican Food I've Ever Had 2/17/2007

After growing up in California, and living in Branson, MO for the last 26 years, I've eaten all kinds of a variety of great food. However, my wife and I enjoy going to Chile Verde Cafe over all the other places. My favorite food there is the Bar-b-que grilled fajita burrito. In fact, I love it so much that I used to stuff myself with the chips before I got the main course. My strategy was I wanted to be full, so I would eat only half of the burrito. Then I would take the other half home and enjoy another meal. However, my plan soon failed. I ended up eating the chips and the big meal at the place. Anyway, all that to say, I love the food, and the atmosphere. Perhaps the best part, however, is the friendliness of the ownership and staff. If you walk in a stanger, you can't help but walk out a friend, and a pretty full one, at that. There's a theme park in Branson called Silver Dollar City. Their motto is: ""Create Memories Worth Repeating."" That ought to be the motto of Chile Verde Cafe. Each time I go there is a memory worth repeating. Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Parking, Friendliness Cons: On weekends, need to arrive early to avoid a wait. more
