Cancun Mexican Restaurant

I;ve been here multiple times with many different people and for some reason most really like it. My friend from Upstate New York said it was the best mexican she ever had. It's been hit or miss with me - usually the food is uninspiring and just like any mexican at any cheap mexican restaurant. Sometimes the drinks are great so maybe if you go afterwork or just to hang out and maybe have an appetizer it could be fun. more

Horrible food - not Mexican, doesn't even compare with Taco Bell. Dirty restaurant - crawlers near kitchen and dining area...who did they pay off to pass food inspection?! Rude Service! Pick another restaurant...you'll be glad you did. more

They charge you per drink refill without telling you (my family of 4 racked up a $50 bill in coke and iced tea(!). The food is subpar - what kind of Mexican restaurant has ground beef outside of taco bell? The food is also extremely expensive for what you get. This is NOT an upscale restaurant, and our bill for 4 was ~$130. The OWNER of the restaurant is an EXTREME jerk! So rude I can't believe there is any repeat business. With all of the great restaurants in this city, PLEASE don't waste your time at this restaurant. Give your money to a restaurant that deserves it! AVOID THIS RESTAURANT LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! Just ended up in Cancun because we were on 8th avenue for business on Saturday and at 3:30 pm were really hungry for lunch. We were therefore really happy to be served warm chips, salsa and water right away. Our waiter took our order very quickly, maybe too quickly, but being hungry we were appreciative. The food came in the expected time frame and was really very good. I was very surprised to see all the negative reviews because our experience was so positive. Cons: noisy, loud music more

I would go this restaurant only for the chips and salsa. They were sooo good! On the other hand, I went today (Cinco de Mayo) and wasn't at all expected to be seated right away and for my food to come out quickly. However, I wasn't expecting to be forced to drink Tequila just because it was Cinco de Mayo. The waiter offered me Tequila and I declined. He literally tilted my head back and poured about 2 to 3 shots worth in my mouth. I also ordered my food before I was seated and the wait for my food was almost an hour. I can't describe what a horrible experience I had. I bit into a one-inch long screw that was in the guacamole. My tooth was broken. DO NOT GO!!!!! HORRIBLE IN EVERY WAY IMAGINABLE. more

I used to love coming here after work for drinks and food. Sometimes margaritas are the only thing that will do the trick and this place has great and giant margaritas. My distaste for this place has grown over the place four years, and after 20+ bad experiences, I've decided enough is enough. As a long time patron I?ve witnessed first hand how they?ve ?shrunk? their portions and raised their prices. How their service has severely declined, and is nothing short of pushy now. Unfortunately the ONLY thing that has remained consistent is the way they?ve tried to rip me off EVERY (over 20 separate times!) time I?m there. It?s so embarrassing that I no longer take clients here because you have to argue your bill every time. (Which is disappointing regardless of how many margaritas you?ve had) Aside from over or double charging for drinks, the service charge is usually hidden halfway down the bill ? which which turns out to be easy to see when you?re expecting to be ripped off. So, although I like their drinks ? the AWFUL service, poor quality and super-shrunk portions, and dirty bathroom, which I won?t even get into (yuck!) are the reasons that I will never go back here, and strongly recommend that other steer clear of Cancun! Well this will be several reviews combined into one since I have been here quite a few times. Luckily, I have had the same experience every time. We have been thrown out of here a few times. While sitting at the table we were told to leave for being loud, another time we were told to leave because people needed to sit. Umm, wait? But EVERY time they try to take advantage of our being BOMBED and try to rip us off. Overcharging, changing prices, charging for things no one ordered. The last time we went they added the service change (in the middle of the bill..luckily I caught it), then told us we owed 40 more dollars. I counted it twice and they did not bring out the money they claimed to be ""not enough"". They also asked, ""Where is my tip?"" hoping we wouldn't notice the service charge on there already. I've been to this restaurant a few times after ice skating in central park out of convenience and I've never had a problem. I went here not too long ago and I just had to blog a little about it. It had defiantly exceeded my expectations. I was in the city with a friend and when we got hungry we usually have a few hot spots in mind. Since we were rushing on this particular day we didn't and decided to take a chance. The staff was extremely nice and caring, the food was very fresh and was presented great. I will defiantly recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants great Mexican in Midtown! FIRST THEY REFUSED A VALID RESTAURANT DISCOUNT I HAD PAID TO GET..OK, THAT'S MY FIGHT WITH THE ISSUING COMPANY. BUT THE FOOD WAS BARELY TOLERABLE..COLD RICE, BLACK BEAN SOUP THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER OUT OF A CAN, SHRIMP THAT CAME OUT OF YESTERDAY'S BARGAIN BIN, AND A DARK PLACE THAT WAS EMPTY AND STILL HAD LOUSY SERVICE. Me and my friends go to Cancun at least once a week, maybe more :) we've become midday regulars b/c now we have a table where we always get seated at :) The food is quick making lunch here convenient. The Margaritas are big and strong. I like the wait staff b/c they leave you alone when it's clear you're going to be sitting and chatting for awhile and they're quick with the check when they can see that you're in a rush. I recently ate at Cancun and the service sucked BAD. I asked what types of sofe drinks they had and basically the impression was this is what we have take it or leave it. Also I noticed when a white family came in they were greeted with open arms was it because am spanish. I've been to Cancun, MX and the people there are awesome. The people in Cancun restaurant need to visit the real CANCUN, MX and learn from the service out there. more

We had an awful dining experience here on a Friday night, despite the great food. It was loud to begin w/ at this place, but then a mariachi band played & it was deafening. Sure, a mariachi band at a Mexican restaurant is a festive thing, but this is a small room, have them play in spurts or have a sign outside saying ""Band Tonight"" so people know - it would've been great if we wanted a loud, festive atmosphere where we didn't expect to talk to each other much, but we didn't! We were coworkers who wanted to catch up over dinner & drinks & we could barely hear each other! The band played a LONG time right near us, despite the manager's claim that they were only going to play for 15 mins longer after one in our party complained. I ordered vegetable fajitas but the waiter brought vegetable enchiladas. I actually was hungry enough to eat that wrong order but my coworker spoke up on my behalf. The waiter tried to make it MY mistake - ""I wrote down enchiladas, so maybe she was thinking fajitas but said enchiladas."" !!!!!!! At my coworker's insistence, he took it back & eventually brought the right order. All the food was tasty - vegetable fajitas, chicken enchiladas, salsa, eggplant casserole. Then we got the check - the waiter added a gratuity for a party of 5!!! We didn't complain about that to the manager, though in retrospect, we should've. We paid, one of our party left & we eventually ended up ordering another round of drinks... The waiter tried to get automatic gratuity from us again for that last round of drinks after he had issued the check for them & we had already paid it! We refused to pay a tip on the additional drinks. I wish we told the manager what was happening - perhaps it was just this one bad waiter & the manager had no idea he was doing all this stuff - but we wanted to get outta there! Maybe this place is better for lunch, or during the week, but I doubt we'll ever come back based on this experience. There are better restaurants in the area. Cancun delivered the absolute WORST restaurant experience I have ever had, and I give it a thumbs-down in every category: disgusting food, horrible service, embarrassing decor. I love Mexican food, and lived in CA for 6 yrs. To my surprise, I have eaten at some very decent Mexican places in NY; Cancun Restaurant is not one of them. I ordered a Coke, which was served to me in a dubious margarita glass with a plastic, green cactus stem, with a ridiculous tall straw, which practically rested horizontally on top of the glass, because a margarita glass is too shallow for such a straw. The waiter, after having rushed up to get our drink order and who asked us for our food order before we had anywhere near enough time to peruse the menu, could barely speak English and couldn't answer as to whether or not he liked certain items listed. This seemed to be a bus-boy in waiter's clothing. Because the prices on the menu were relatively high for a Mexican restaurant, I suspected that the quality of the food must be very good. NOT so! We ordered traditional items, difficult to screw-up, especially being that we didn't order meat or fish. The food was so disgusting (any canned refried beans are better that the scary, gray mess they served here) that we forced down as much as we could stomach only because we were starving, yet we left hungry and ate a second dinner later. The waiter, who had been in such a hurry to take our initial drink order, did not check on us once throughout the meal, and I saw him leaning against the back wall, looking out at the restaurant, practically the whole time. NO CLASS. Someone cleared our plates and then we sat for about a half hour while no one asked us if we wanted anything else. We put on our jackets, preparing to leave, and still no one approached. We considered leaving without paying, but our scruples wouldn't let us, so we signaled someone to bring us our check. Don't go to Cancun Restaurant if you appreciate good food and good service. This place looks like a real Mexican restaurant with its decor and lively ambiance. The food is tasty as well as their margaritas. I have been here a few times and can't complain. While it is not the best mexican restaurant I've been to, it is still good. Great after work as well to hang out by the bar, have a few margaritas while watching sports on their tvs. Great location as well. more

This is, hands down, the best Mexican I have had yet in NYC (and I have looked)! My wife and I are Dallas transplants and this place is the closest we have come to real Tex-Mex. Great chips and salsa (for free!). The burritos and enchiladas are excellent and the margaritas can't be beat. Pros: Excellent food Cons: Average surroundings more
