Nice setting TERRIBLE FOOD!!!! 8/17/2005

We had really been looking forward to a really good French dining expirience at Cafe des Artiste, but BOY where we dissapointed. The service was fine, ambience romantic , food tastless. we started with a goat cheese and beet salad. The cheese was flavourless, the roasted pine nuts where not even roasted.TASTELESS. main course a completely tasteless sole filet dish, nice presentation but no salt and pepper, no flavour. I had asked the waiter beforehand if the mussels where nice and big, and he highly recomended them. I was looking forward to some good Moules and frites. What I got was rasin sized, over cooked Mussels and under cooked sloppy fries. i was very dissapointed. This was all simple food to prepare and they managed to mess all of it up. I am a professional chef my self, THIS IS AN EMBARRESSMENT TO THE ART OF FRENCH CUSINE. Get it together!! more

Editorial
  • The Scene
On a dark side street in Hollywood, the sign nearly hidden by creeping ivy, Café des Artistes buzzes in a lovely old house. Warm melon walls, hardwood floors and French posters and trinkets beckon couples inside, while groups cluster on the lush, lofty back patio.

    The Food
Chef Jean-Pierre Bosc's cuisine is refreshingly uncomplicated--no plates swirled with sauce or frustrating fusion here. Rich, garlicky New Zealand mussels and spicy merguez sausages with cumin dip are equally winning starters; the entree of duck confit is rich and earthy in a gratin of flageolets. The hanger steak in red wine-shallot sauce is simply delicious--tender, sweet and accompanied by hot, crisp frites. For dessert, order a pot of the decadent, creamy chocolate mousse.
