Honestly, this has got to be a prison cafeteria disguised as a Southwestern cuisine restaurant. At first, I thought the meal might be good in part to the roasted tomato salsa and the pleasing decor, but it went all downhill from there! Even the salsa, the best part of the meal, was mediocre compared to other restaurants'; such as Don Pablo's in Norwood and Newport, El Pueblo in Blue Ash or Chili's in Montgomery; they even served it with what seemed as store-bought tortilla chips instead of the fresh, homemade chips served in the aforementioned restaurants! When my order, a seafood chimichanga with shrimp and crab, finally came out, it was not what I was expecting. I couldn't even taste or find the shrimp, and the crab was barely noticeable as it swam in a mildly nauseating sauce. The beans and rice were okay, but not even the most idiot of cooks could manage to botch those up! I had had a big lunch only a couple of hours before, so I ended up with a half a plate to take home, and as I attempted to put my chimichanga into the foam box, the box gave way (it wrongly placed on a table corner) and my chimichanga went SPLAT onto the floor. I do accept that it was my fault, and our server, although having made himself scarce earlier, managed to kindly clean it up; he was nearly breaking out into a sweat and it ws clear he'd been working hard all night. But here's the kicker: the owner, a fat Indian man (don't ask me why an Indian man was running a Southwestern ""bistro"") was no help at all when I went to ask for compensation for losing my overpriced ($16) chimichanga. He'd been flaunting his ""oh-I'm-a -rich-restaurateur-and-I-have-a-lot-of-money"" attitude all night, and I even saw him throwing some menus very rudely at the table where he had just sat a nice middle-aged couple (he literally threw the menus from five feet away)! Anyway, as I spoke to him, asking if there were some way that I could get another half seafood chimichanga to-go, he began mumbling to me in some unintelligible gibberish and eventually said he'd pay for my next meal. When I asked for a coupon or written statement to validate this he just brushed me off saying ""I remember, I remember!"" Seems to me that he won't remember at all, but just said that to brush me out of his long, matted, disgusting, graying hair. If I had went to Don Pablo's, El Pueblo, or Chili's (where the management is professional and helpful) they'd have given me a half order of my food in a heartbeat. But at Cactus Pear, the management mumbled and fumbled his way into an excuse to NOT do it. I'd been wanting to try Cactus Pear in Blue Ash for years now, but it was a dismal, and expensive, experience. I paid $16 for bad food and service, whereas I could have gone to a better place for less. You can get great food, atmosphere AND service at El Pueblo, Don Pablo's or Chili's for under $10 instead of bad, expensive everything at Cactus Pear. Cactus Pear is SOOO BAD I think they may beat Delta Air Lines for worst everything. This place doesn't even deserve 1 star; if I could, I'd give it NEGATIVE 5 stars! I will never o back, and as I ate there I wished I'd gone to the Chinese place in the same strip mall instead. AVOID CACTUS PEAR LIKE THE PLAGUE; IT'S THE WORST RESTAURANT ON EARTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *NOTE* Notice how the last review was in 2008! Well, now it's 2012, and I think that in four years, a restaurant's food and overall quality can decay enough that it goes from the best to the worst. The weird Indian guy could have even bought it from someone else; the soul of a restaurant is in the owner, and he's got a bad one. Just think about it if you still don't believe me about how bad Cactus Pear is. And don't even THINK about opening one of their franchises (they're so stupid that they're doing that now)! If your brave enough, go and try it, but you've been warned... more

One of my favorite restaurants in Cincinnati 6/29/2008

The salsa is better than any other Mexican restaurant anywhere. I've never ordered anything disappointing. The owner is very pleasant and remembers us. The food is always delicious and pretty. Service is great. It always seems very reasonably priced to me, but I'm not a student anymore. The restaurant is not brightly lit as it also has a bar. I personally really enjoy that for a relaxed meal. Pros: Salsa, great food, service more

Great latin fair 5/9/2008

What a great place to visit. I went with a group of people and the waitress, although shorthanded, did great... I have to mention that they must have their Margaritas on a great work out plan because boy were they STRONG, if you order one keep it to a small cause they will knock your socks off!!! more

Best Margaritas in town 12/2/2007

I took my gf here over the weekend and got a pitcher of frozen margaritas for the 2 of us. After 2, i could deff tell i was getting a buzz. Although you have to pay for your chips and salsa, the salsa is made fresh daily and is only 1.95. Not a bad price for an appitizer. I highly recommend the wraps. They are huge and a great price for as much as you get. Hope this helps. I have only eat at the clifton spot but have heard the other one is good as well. Pros: Friendly staff, great wraps, and great drinks Cons: Pricey more

Too expensive for what you get 11/15/2007

I took my two adult children out for a nice meal. Can't believe that we had to pay for chips and salsa. Also, we had marquiritas and there was NO ALCOHOL in them; well, practically none. I could've had a glass of water and gotten more of a buzz. Six dollars for a drink that has no discernable alcohol in it is beyond ridiculous. My bill was $82 w/o the tip. Unbelievable. All we had were enchiladas. Nothing extraordinary although they were good. Definitely not an $82 meal. I may go back but I wouldn't order drinks and I'd have to think twice about paying that kind of money for enchiladas. The owners definitely should reevaluate where they cut costs and need to trim some off those prices. Pros: We were seated right away on a Saturday night. Cons: No discernable alcohol in the drinks. High prices. more

Mediocre 11/5/2007

The food was good, though not spectacular. Most items were overpriced. The margaritas and black bean salsa were great, though. Pros: Quaint neighborhood Cons: Too pricey more

Best black bean salsa 11/17/2006

The black bean salsa can't be beat. Great food -- everything I've tried was spectacular. My favorite is the chicken wrap. Pros: black bean salsa is great Cons: limited parking and you have to pay $1 for chips/salsa more

One of my favorite places in Clifton, period 9/5/2006

The owner is a gentleman, the main bartender is a great guy and the waitstaff is extremely professional and competent. I suggest this establishment for everyone, even those who don't like Margaritas or Mexican quisine. Good selection of drinks, great food, just great all-round. Pros: Family and Bar patrons easily share this restaurant Cons: Some dishes may be pricy, for some. more

One of my favorites! 4/20/2006

Cactus Pear is one of my favorite restaurants in Cincinnati, and probably my favorite in Clifton. I go once a week and ALWAYS get the chicken nacho salad ($8.95), which is the perfect mix of warm black beans, cool vegetables, melted cheese, and crunchy chips. I've had the cuban melt and arizone wrap sandwiches before, they were good, but the chicken nacho salad is awesome. A basket of chips and black bean salsa (highly recommended) are $1...they might not be on the menu, but you can ask for them. To top it off I always order one of thier perrrfect frozen margaritas (very strong, and also available in pitchers). No matter what time I go, I'm always seated promtly and the nacho salad is out within minutes! Servers are very pleasant. I never leave without a happy stomach and a smile on my face :) Pros: margaritas, black bean salsa, fast service more

Not Recommended 2/17/2006

I had read good things of this restaurant, but upon finally eating there, I discovered expensive food that was far from worth the price paid. The atmosphere was nothing to boast about, and nothing myself or my date ate was even remotely appetizing. more

This is not fine dining - why so expensive?! 1/26/2006

To charge for chips and salsa at a mexican restaurant is ridiculous - especially when they have never done that in the past, and decide to shortly after they also raised prices on every menu item by at least a couple of dollars. They apparently have no concern or regard for value, which is unfortunately for them of utmost concern to consumers. I have lived in the neighborhood many years and used to enjoy eating here regularly. As a consumer who likes to feel that my patronage is appreciated, I will not return. Cons: WAY OVERPRICED more

Disappointing 6/4/2005

I stopped in for lunch at the location down by UC after seeing here that it was among the cities best mexican. No Way! everything on the menu was ridiculously overpriced, especially for lunch. They had a new york steak I beleive it was for like $22. This is in a place with vinyl covered tables - not a place that should be serving a $22 steak. Pastas were $14 & $15. I settled for the steak caesar sandwich with avacado, $7.95. the thing had plenty of steak and was tasty, but it barely even had a slice of avacado on it. we're talkin 3 tiny slivers. granted this is only 1 experience and I got a sandwich, but I really wasn't impressed. Cons: overpriced more
