Still a favorite, 25 years and going... 7/5/2010

Been shopping at this store for nearly 25 years now. For the longest time, their selection and prices were unbeatable. Despite the encroachment of Best Buy and other retailers selling cds as a loss leader; Rolling Stones has held on because of their selection, and competitive prices. Almost every single domestic cd in the store can be had for $9.99 or less, because of their recurring ads/coupons in the ILLINOIS ENTERTAINER, though they do seem a little pricey when it comes to multi-disc sets and imports. The only complaint I'm having lately with the shop is that there isn't as many "new" albums coming out these days as there used to be, and it shows when you look through the racks. As cd sales are declining, it seems like the store is pushing t-shirts, video games, and incense a little harder these days. Still, this is one of my favorite haunts, and I look forward to visiting again soon. more

It's all about the rock and roll, baby! 5/18/2006

First of all, let me get this off my chest. Do you watch American Idol? Well, please explain to me why the rocker was sent home and the diva is still there??? A.I. does NOT support rockers, that's true. But do we really need another diva in the biz like Miss McP? GO TAYLOR, GO SOUL PATROL. Whoo, hoo. (I wanted a Chris/Taylor finale and now my dreams are crushed...boo hoo :( Okay, they probably won't sell many A.I. CDs at this store, but they do sell great rock. For those of us who were around before Britney and Jessica came to destroy the music world (I'm sorry, did I say that out loud?), this place meant rock and rock for REAL rockers. When you walk in, you will literally hear ear bleed level music blasting from the stereo (is there any other way to play 'em?) You will love their selection, cool shirts and other items. A lot of big stars have passed through these walls and some of them are proudly displayed on the awesome paintings on the exterior of the building. We love Rolling Stones records!! more

Like a rolling stone 3/17/2006

This store has nothing to do with the Rolling Stones or Bob Dylan other than selling their CDs, but it's still a must see. If you live in the area or are visiting the area and looking for great deals, and don't want to support that "mega store" with kids walking around in a robotic manner wearing blue shirts, then check them out. You have to see their window display which is famous throughout the area. They are also known for having big name artists like Ozzy and Geddy Lee and many other rock and metal people that have come for in-store signings. more

Not Quite Good Enough 12/31/2005

Stepping inside Rolling Stone, there is great promise. Good music playing, unique decor inside [think: cd's hanging from the ceiling].But nothing is more annoying than the elitist music snobs that flock and/or work there. Oh, no, wait. Something IS more annoying: paying $22 for a cd you can buy for $13 at the Best Buy or Target less than a block away. Once upon a time, Rolling Stone, an independent record store just outside of Chicago, meant something. It was freedom from the corporate mainstream music forced upon the masses. These days, you don't have to spend too much money or waste time being sniffed at by the employees, who think themselves somehow above you on a musical level because they're on the other side of the counter. True, some great bands have passed through and done signings, but now all you're doing is paying extra for the attitude. It's not worth it. Get the hard to find music online and save yourself the aggravation. Everything else, you can get cheaper at a franchise store. more

Everything You Want in a Music Store 8/18/2005

This music store is not only a great place to go find your favorite cd's and dvd's but it is also a historic treasure of the chicago suburbs. This store caters to the needs of any music lover that comes in. The walls are lined with many different categories of music cd's that you can easily spend 3 hours browsing to your heart's content. Also, they have a section that is dedicated to just Music Dvd's. You can find the most obscure music artists in here and even those hard to find artists that you have had trouble finding elsewhere. Their prices are very reasonable. At many times, mainstream CD's and popular artists are sold here for less than ten dollars while being sold for close to 15 dollars elsewhere. They're conveniently open till midnight every single night and the staff here is awesome! Extremely knowledgeable and friendly. more
