This hotel is so cool!!! Looks a little different from the outside but as soon as I walked in the staff was very welcoming and the lobby smelled amazing! Pets are soooo welcome and they even bring you a doggie bed and bowls for food and water. How considerate. Nice pool in a nice neighborhood area. Great for a walk! Highly recommended! Super cool and nice atmosphere :) more

Great LOcation 1/12/2012

This hotel has underwent a major renovation and is wonderful. The rooms are very much updated and a welcome change from the standard branded hotels. The staff is super helpful and always have a nice greeting for you at any time of the day. Will stay here always when in St. Louis! more

Shameful 7/26/2008

I was there a couple years ago and although the hotel was dirty and filled with a staff that you would expect to find at a junkyard, the nightclub more than made up for what the rooms and hotel staff lacked so I return July 2008 only to find the nightclub closed , Also the restaurant was closed the pool was closed but the rooms were still dirty and the staff was still arrogant, they would not refund my money so I could go to another hotel ,although I did so anyway. Pros: Nice location Cons: everything closed except for the front desk more

Old and Musty!!! 6/23/2008

The condition of the Cheshire Lodge is deplorable! The lodge owner has managed to run one of the most charming hotels in St Louis into the ground. My last stay in April was horrible. The garage and pool had been condemned by the city. You had to walk on a unstable plywood bridge just to get in, The fabulous restaurant and pub closed (because the lodge owner kicked out the operators). The only available parking was on a dark alley behind the now closed restaurant (unsafe and scary). The staff is rude does not seem to care about the terrible condtions. They seem to think closing is in the very near future! The entire inside has a old stale smell. Rooms and beds are in run down condition. It is ashame what has happened to the Cheshire complex. I will not return and hope future people don't make the same mistake I made by staying there. Pros: Location Cons: Room, Bed, Pool, Parking, Restaurant, Pub, Service, Cleanliness more

Better service at gas station 12/10/2007

Great decor and it is a nice little spot if you have all the time in the world. With the exception of the first visit when Neil tended bar the service has been AWFUL. Seating is very limited. Good luck finding a spot for four let alone two after 9pm Friday or Saturday. I have been at the bar several times. The first was a blast and we were taken care of however it was a lazy Thursday night. The same came not be said for the weekend visits. Table service was a joke, one visit by the sever no follow up. It has never been the same bar tender in the four or five times I have visited. Each trip has been worse than the time before. I caution you about going here. I would not take friends from in town or out of town here. more

The worst Lodge in St. Louis 7/31/2007

You can not rely on their website for accurate information. We were guests in mid-July, 2007 and the pool had been closed all summer, the underground parking lot has been condemned (per the hotel staff). They did not have adequate parking for the number of guests. They asked us to park our car on the street and for safety of our car, ""we should sleep in our car"". \r I would not recommend this Inn to my worst enemy. For your safety, please stay somewhere else. Cons: Unsafe, dirty, old more

Worst Customer Service in the History of Hotels 7/4/2007

Good location and price but be prepared to pay for it with the worst customer service imaginable. The problems began when I attempted to confirm my reservation and the person on the phone refused to help me. Instead, he told me to call the website that I booked through. Then, my friend, who was also staying at the hotel, left his credit card at the hotel bar overnight. The next morning, he had to go through a 30-minute ordeal with the desk staff because they refused to open the lock box.\r \r Avoid. Pros: Price, location Cons: Customer Service more

A welcome disappointment to my negative expectations. 6/12/2007

I was very hesitant to wander into the pub after reading the last reviewers comments on the bartender. I had heard that the bartender of 20+ years had left the establishment a year or so before my visit, and that he had been replaced with someone with a different sense of humor and style. It has been many years since I partook in the great drinks, cozy atmosphere and the overall ""ambiance"" of the Fox and Hounds within the bowels of the Cheshire Lodge. \r \r I will keep this simple and to the point Cheshire Lodge; don't change a thing. The new bartender was a perfect fit for the overall feel of the bar. I tended bar in my college days and know how it feels to have 20 or 30 people come up to me at last call and ask for the tab to be split up how ever many ways. Anyway, kudos to the bartender for taking care of us and keeping the pub as a whole happy during a very busy evening.\r \r I think the last reviewer needs a lesson in ""English Pub"" etiquette and perhaps a hefty spoon feeding of ambiance as the bartender truly brings the feeling of the Fox and Hounds full circle. more

Great bar, Horrible bartender 4/25/2007

This place is an establishment... it's old, English, and cozy. But unfortunately the bartender ruins the ambiance. He was completely rude and overcharged us on our drinks. Then, because there were about 20 of us in the bar, refused to split up our checks. A plea to the Cheshire Lodge... get another bartender! Pros: The ambiance Cons: the Bartender! more

Low Key with nice location 12/2/2006

Pretty quiet place and you can tell they kind of like it that way. They don't go out of their way to be over the top in any way; doors, walls, fixtures are well maintained despite their age. Rooms and hallways are sanitary for sure. However, this hotel is proud of it's age and sense of history. \r \r Specific to our one night stay was a handicapped accessible room that had all the necessary customizations in the bathroom, which is important to the handicapped. Very nice wireless internet and for those without a laptop, there is a computer room that includes a printer.\r \r The overall feel and character is a bit of old school pampering. The strength is in the detail, the little things. Not the newest, most sterile. But solidly clean with good service. The pool was out of service during our visit, and the restaurant was closed for remodeling. Pros: Parking, Location, Price, Character Cons: Pool and Restaurant not in service, more

Pleasant 10/4/2006

There are few places as cozy, no matter what the season, as the Fox and Hounds. Sometimes on a Friday night after work it can be a little crowded, but on a Saturday night, it can be quiet enough to have a pleasant drink and conversation. \r \r It's small, and a bit claustrophobic, but in a sense, that is its charm. Not to mention the competent bartender, and the piano player, who comes in around 10 pm.\r \r The pizza is a bit pricey, around $17.00 for a large, but is good. The cheese platter is a good value, and the drinks are reasonably priced. \r \r For me it's not so much a singles bar, but a place to hang out and talk, and have a few good pints, or one of their great drinks. The hot scotch is especially good, any time of year.\r \r If you like sitting around in low light, on comfy couches and chairs, then this is the place for you. \r \r That being said, let's keep it a secret, but tell your friends.... more

Romantic! 3/7/2006

This is the perfect conversation place. Comfortable enough to sit back and relax or to sit up and laugh. Pros: Friendly bartenders, Comfy seats, Ambiance Cons: Rude hotel staff, Tight parking lot more

A must stop in St. Louis 1/27/2006

If you consider yourself a St. Louisan, then you have to go to Fox and Hounds at least once in your life. I've never been to the UK, but this is what I think would be a classic representation of a English tavern. The dark, cozy atmosphere is embelished with traditional leather chairs and couches, paintings and old book filled shelves. This is not a large tavern, but that is part of what makes it so great. Pros: atmosphere more

A Delight! 11/5/2005

Fox & Housds was a delight to visit! The smallish bar was packed with people, but it was not unpleasant. Most patrons were 35+, and having a great time! Live pianist / singer was great but not intrusive, playing old favorites like Sweet Caroline. They have a huge selection of mixed drinks, coffees, beers, and whiskies. Unfortunately they had a small selection of food items. We had the large cheeseboard, and we were impressed! This was not your usual cheddar-mozz-swiss plate. Very highly recommended to those looking to get away from the noisy college bars. Pros: Drink Selection, Seating / Ambiance, Friendly Staff Cons: Crowded more

Customer Service 10/15/2005

This hotel is is cozy and romantic. The Fox and the Hound is a great piano bar tucked away in the main lobby. Mark, the bartender, is wonderful as is the piano player. There is usually a fire burning when the weather is appropriate and it simply has a wonderful atmosphere. On the other hand, the front desk staff are rude and unhelpful. In the lobby, there is absolutely no pay phone nor a local line for complimentary use. I politely requested to use the phone at the front desk and was told 'they don't just let anyone off the street use their phones'. I assume they assumed I wasn't staying in the hotel since I had chatted with them earlier and mentioned I was from St. Louis. They directed me to a pay phone in a parking lot of a nearby resteraunt!! Pros: Fox & Hound Pub, quaint, cozy Cons: front desk staff, smoky bars more

Bars 9/2/2004

I think the Fox and Hounds Tavern is one of the neatest places in St. Louis...It is a place that remains forever etched in your heart. I have only the fondest of memories since I started going there in the late 60's and have returned everytime my travels bring me back to St. Louis. Pros: Happy Place, Friendly Servers, Great Ambiance Cons: , None, None more

great place on a cold night 10/19/2002

Great spot for a drink on a cold night. It's a cozy place that I will definitely visit again. more
