Editorial review from Citysearch 3/27/2013

I booked this appointment for a skin condition that I have had for over 3 years and that, most recently, worsened slightly after having my first child. I had previously been seen at the Cleveland Clinic and was prescribed a medication that worked wonderfully. Upon making this appointment with Dr. Jenkin, I explained to the staff that I wanted a consult for my condition and that I also wanted a prescription for the same medication that I previously used. When Dr. Jenkin came into the examination room, he quickly looked at the area and advised that he did not think that it was that bad and didn't think that I needed anything for it. I told him that, in the past, this condition has worsened very quickly and is quite embarrassing; therefore, I would like to proactively treat it, especially given the fact that making a doctor's appointment for myself with a newborn in toe is difficult to arrange. He simply advised me to wear sunscreen, and offered a chemical peel if it worsened. Really? My husband is also a physician and, if we weren't ethical people, I would have just obtained this prescription by other means. As a former attorney and the wife of a doctor, I think I'm educated enough to realize that I need to wear sunscreen, and I didn't make the appointment to obtain obvious advice. I left with a couple of sunscreen recommendations that weren't even available in the Ballard office (where I went for my appointment), and hugely disappointed. My advice is to look elsewhere if you are wanting a physician who at least offers more than stating the obvious. If Dr. Jenkin didn't want to prescribe the cream that I previously used, he should have at least offered something a bit more helpful than SPF and the purchase of a wide-brimmed sun hat. Good Dermatologists ARE out there, even if I apparently have to travel back to Cleveland to see one. more

Great Medical staff, but clarify costs and followups 11/10/2010

I found the medical staff to be superb. I agree the front staff is not the smiliest and could be a bit more friendly but have never been treated rude. The only issue I had with them was a follow up treatment I had for laser treatment of veins on my nose. I swear I was told there was a free follow up to get a second quick zap of the ones that return a few months later. When I found out that it was in fact a charged event I opted out. Just be very precise on what is covered by the initial charge and remember the name of the individual stating it. Maybe get documentation of any covered followups. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that I misheard them as I have been going to them for many years and been very pleased otherwise. more

Great PA, Horrible MA and front desk staff 10/14/2010

I usually don?t write reviews on things, but had to write this because I was so frustrated by my appointment today. Here is a little preface. Before scheduling my appointment, I had researched dermatologists to find one I thought would fit my specific needs. After reading about specialties and experience and all the stuff, I decided I wanted to see Dr. Jenkin. So I called and asked if Dr. Jenkin was accepting new patients, they said he was and I set up an appointment. When I arrived for my appointment, the front desk staff was luke-warm welcoming. After filling out paper work and all that stuff, the ""nurse"" who I'm sure was probably just an MA took me back to the treatment room. While walking back I mentioned to her that I was sorry I was a little late (I was only 5 min late but I wanted to be polite). She said it was okay since they had rearranged me in schedule. I didn't know what she meant and so I didn't say anything. Then she mentioned I would be seeing Ardeth Dunne. Which leads me to complaint #1 they had rescheduled me with someone else and didn't tell me until I was in the treatment room, how unprofessional. So when I called I told them I wanted to have some moles checked out and had some other skin related questions. When the MA asked if I was there to have my moles checked out, I told her yes but I have some other things I wanted to talk about. She then said, ""well we only have an allotted amount of time, so if we can get to your other questions then we will."" I was very polite and just went with it. But in my head I was like ARE YOU KIDDING ME! I?m not going to come back for another appointment to have some simple things addressed (which were questions about my dandruff and laser hair removal). How unprofessional for that MA to say that to me. As a future physician I am well aware of the short amount of time providers have with their patients, but never is that something you tell a patient and never has a MA or nurse told that to me. Luckily the PA that they rescheduled me with, Ardeth Dunne, was amazing. Not only did she do a through check of all the moles on my body, but she also addressed my dandruff and laser hair removal questions. She was very sweet and kind and caring and even gave me her personal extension. And even though other reviews say that they prescribed brand name prescriptions, Ardeth prescribed me a generic prescription without me asking her. And despite the stressed feeling I had about the time constraints that the MA so graciously informed me of, Ardeth never rushed me. So I left with my prescription for medicated shampoo, as I was leaving I expected the front desk staff to say goodbye or thank for coming in or have a good day or something. So I awkwardly looked their way a few times while I was leaving because I didn't want to be rude, and it wasn't until the third time I looked at them that they said something. I?ve never been to a physician?s office where the front desk had been so rude and unprofessional. I agree with the other reviews on here about their front desk staff. They need to hire more professional receptionists and MA's, and give Ardeth a raise. As a future physician I hope to never work in a place like that where the staff has lost touch with what healthcare is all about. more

Good facial but unclear about fees 6/21/2010

I feel there should be a balanced review here. I visited the Dermatology Associates two times in May. The first time I went in for a general consultation and got to see Dr. Jenkin and an aesthetician. They were polite and professional but I got the feeling that the Dr. had to finish my consultation in 5 minutes. When he left he said the aesthetician would answer my questions. The latter tried to be helpful but she couldn't answer all my questions. When I checked out, they said I did not owe anything because it was a free consultation, and I left with a prescription of acne treatment. At the drug store, I was told that the prescription would cost more than $200. I called DA back and asked for a cheaper generic substitute. They asked me to use the ""promotion card"" they distributed to me at the office. I went back to the drug store with the card, and indeed did not have to pay any copay -- although I wasn't sure how much my insurance company was charged for that small tube of acne medication. The second time I went back was for a facial with Nancy. She was super knowledgeable about skin care and did a GREAT job on rejuvenating the skin on my face. I got a half-price discount for getting the ""hydrabrasion"" facial for the first time (paid $75 for the $150 facial). I was very happy with that visit. However, a couple of weeks later, I was sent a bill of $20 for the first visit. I called back and asked about this. The staff said it was a mistake at first, but eventually called back and told me that I was billed because I saw the doctor. The truth is I never asked to see the doctor specifically - and I was told more than once that the consult was free. (In fact, I still have a flyer from them that says ""Cosmestic Consult"" - 15 minute consult: Free""). Now I don't think it's unreasonable to pay $20 for a doctor consultation (that is, after my insurance had paid over $100 for it), but I would have appreciated knowing about the possible fees and payment difference between aesthetician and the doctor. All in all, I feel like the Associates were more concerned about billing the insurance company than helping their patience. My skin was improved with the facial though not the consultation. Pros: Great facial service, staff are polite and professional Cons: Unclear fees, expensive medication, not informative more

great doctors terrible receptionist/front desk workers 1/12/2010

My first time coming to this office was running a little late due to traffic, parking and then finding the office. I spoke to someone and she said it will be ok and you can still come to your appointment. Arrived 17min past appointment time. Unfortunately there is a communication problem in the office where it was not relayed to the front desk people. So I had to deal with the rudeness of the receptionist telling me you may not be seen or you will have to wait for an hour. I was not 20min past my time only 17min !!!! I tried to explain to her that I spoke to someone else who said it was ok to still come in, but the receptionist would not give me the chance. Then to have her and the guy wtih the faded purple/black stripe shirt talk about me and then talk to another woman about me. It ruined the overall feeling of trust or welcome to the company and the meeting with the Dr. If the doctor was not nice I would have walked out of there. They are not qualified customer service/receptionist/front desk workers, they need more experience. It's not a hard job to do!!!! Nice doctors though!! Pros: Dr was nice and informative. Cons: Front desk gossiping about you while wait to be seen. more

Professional, caring help 2/1/2006

I had a great experience at DA seeking treatment for persistent red skin. Dr. Liu was very helpful and showed genuine concern for poor results I've received from other treatments. The staff was nice and i didn't wait more than 5 or so minutes for the doctor. If you have any skin issues - I recommend this clinic. Pros: Nice doctor, Genuine concern, Easy Parking more
