Editorial review from Citysearch 8/2/2012

My husband and I got married at Shirley Acres two weeks ago. We had the most wonderful time and it was a dream wedding for us! While I have watched friends with different venues stress out, we were able to enjoy being engaged and Shirley Acres took care of all of the details that are making my friends pull their hair out! Jane, our coordinator, was amazing and so helpful. Jim, the florist was a joy to work with and so passionate about his job. The DJ was great and Bob Shirley always made us feel so comfortable. We used The Element hotel and Jane was great at communicating with them when we needed a larger shuttle. The wine and food were wonderful and the cake was perfect (even though it was not traditional - they made it perfectly!). I cannot say enough about how wonderful, how well priced, how easy and enjoyable the wedding was thanks to Shirley Acres! I am so glad we got married there! more

Old & worn out. Not to be confused with shabby chic 12/10/2011

the only nice part of this place is the outside. everything else is old and worn out (not to mention the odd pungent smell throughout inside the venue!!). the walls, the chairs, their furniture is extremely old and not in a chic/vintage kind of way. their messy office is out in the open for everyone to see and their faded lounge chairs in the brides room are so old the cushions literally sink INTO the chairs completely! what was most shocking was how overly priced they are! there are beautiful places in & around Houston for the same price if not less. more

Great place and great people 4/26/2009

We selected Shirley Acres because of their ability to provide an all-inclusive package for our daughter's wedding. The package included an outstanding Wedding Planner (Judy), Minister and full Reception.\r \r The staff were complete professionals in every aspect and although we were arriving from out of state just days prior to the wedding, we were comfortable in knowing that everything would be taken care of.\r \r Judy was well prepared and ensured the wedding went without a hitch. The food was outstanding. The DJ was fabulous and kept the guests entertained and on the dance floor.. \r \r We were extremely pleased with everyone at Shirley Acres and would strongly recommend them. Pros: Wedding Planner, Staff and food more

BEST PLACE TO HAVE A WONDERFUL WEDDING!! 3/17/2009

This was the perfect place for my wedding! This is an all inclusive place and they do everything for you. They give you a wedding coordinator to help you plan your perfect wedding and she helps you throughout your entire wedding. My coordinator was Krystal and she was amazing!!! I could not have gotten through my day without her! The food was great and my cake was so beautiful and so delicious!!! The decorations were more beautiful than I had even envisioned! The DJ was awesome, he had my whole family on the dance floor even my grandma!! Everyone that came to my wedding said that it was the most fun wedding they had ever been to and that everything was so beautifully done! Shirley Acres accommodated my every need and were there for any questions or concerns I had and they are the nicest people ever! Bob Shirley the owner is so caring and you can tell that he wants your day to be perfect and without any problems! My wedding did not have one problem throughout the whole thing even though I was expecting at least one thing to go wrong....but NOTHING did! I would recommend this to anyone who wants a beautiful problem free wedding!!!! Pros: Excellant Service, Great food, beautiful decorations Cons: THERE WERE NONE! more

Dazzling Christmas Wedding 2/24/2009

My (now) wife and I had our reception at Shirley Acres right after Christmas and it was incredible. First, having a wedding during the holiday season is stressful but our wedding coordinator Krystal proved a great help to us. The reception, food, drinks, DJ, cakes, and everything were taken care of, stress-free. If anything arose we knew we could contact someone at Shirley Acres and they would move quickly to resolve or reassure. \r Since the wedding day everyone we've talked to has told us how great the reception and how much fun they had. My wife and I remember it fondly ourselves. We are so greatful for the work they put into it. The staff of Shirley Acres was professional to be sure, but they were also personable and quick to listen to our concerns and questions. \r In fact, the reception was so good and our praise for Shirley Acres so high that my sister, who just got engaged and set the date for the wedding, has decided to have the wedding and reception at the same place. \r Thanks Shirley Acres and thanks specifically to Krystal. Without your help we would still have gotten married but it wouldn't have been so much fun! more

Dream Wedding 6/25/2008

Wow! Our quest for the perfect wedding has begun with one answer to one question, YES! Now the hard part, where? This was going to be an adventure down a first time bunny trail! We started searching the Internet, the newspapers, tv, even friends and family and their two friends, and so on, and so on! I enjoyed meeting with coordinators and getting to know the different facilities. We even spent a mind boggling 3 hours at the Houston Wedding Extravaganza, whoa! When we met with the staff at Shirley Acres, it was apparent the they had something quality to offer. Also, they where located the beautiful area where I spent most of my life growing up, so they had a lock on the familiarity aspect as well. We attended an open, still not sure! This event put us over the edge, we had found it! Now the negotiations begin. I presumed that this was going to be somewhat like buying a used car, man, did they prove me wrong. They at every meeting made everything so comfortable and reassuring that we couldn't say no. My fiance and I even heard our song at the open house, a great omen. Shirley Acres did everything they could to accommodate us with absolutely no pressure whatsoever. I am on crutches with a life long handicap. They made me feel right at home everything was accessible from the get go. From that point of view, you all with so called limitations should know that this is the place to be! Furthermore, I regularly caught the staff checking in on my 91 year old grandmother, scoring more points!\r \r I can't forget about the incredible restaurant next door! The Lodge is one of greatest culinary experiences of my life, and I am known to have an exquisite palate. From the maitrede to the chef, this is top of line vittles. So in short, from our coordinator Lauren to her sidekick, Lindsey. From Bob, Owner/Maitrede to Jim, the floral and cake coordinator. This was the perfect wedding!!!!! \r \r Thanks and God Bless, \r \r The Verbois Family Pros: Wonderful staff, romantic setting, incredible food! Cons: 1960 traffic, 4 hours flew by! more

The Perfect Place 6/16/2008

When we began our search for the perfect wedding site, it was chaos!! Research, driving, appointments, finanacing, the usual. With a ton of information available and every facility from a to z to review, we set out on our quest for our spot. The Junior League, St. James Place, Fitzgeralds, Magnolia Ballroom, Ashley's, Lakeside Country Club, every place from one end ot town to the other! We had been to functions at Shirley Acres in the past and felt like that was a place to visit. \r \r Our first impression of Shirley Acres was beautiful and calming...the wooded setting, nothing staged or contrived and everything we needed or wanted was right there. They had it all!! Our wedding was in December which was a plus for us because the decorations and themes were all in place. The perssonnel became our friends and were so wonderful to work with. Sometimes, I would stop by to check on something and would meet other people in the planning stages. We all felt the same way about Shirley Acres, the setting and being taken care of in such a warm and efficient manner.\r \r We had rave reviews from all that attended about everything from food, music, ceremony, setting, personnel, the whole day was wonderful!\r \r I highly reccommend Shirley Acres for any function that you might have in mind! We are even thinking about having a family reunion there sometime soon! more

Awesome Wedding Spot/Great Customer Service 6/8/2008

Last year after I got engaged, my fiance and I had to start the daunting task of trying to plan a wedding. We chose to do our Wedding at Shirley Acres, I'd been to a wedding there before and remembered them doing an excellent job... We really didn't how to plan a wedding, but Lauren, our coordinator, took us by the hand and led us through all the details. Shirley Acres did a great job, from the time we started planning the wedding until we bolted out the door under a shower of rose petals to start our new lives together as husband and wife. The grounds were plush and green outside, making for great pictures. Inside was just as I imagined with dimly lit lights and amazing floral arrangements created by Jim their onsite florist. The food was grilled to perfection; the cake was beautiful and tasted the same. The staff at Shirley Acres is great, they took care of our every need, when the pressure was on, they reacted with ease and total control... I would highly recommend Shirley Acres for Weddings and Parties!!! Pros: Customer Service/Great Accomodations/Excellent Value Cons: Construction on FM 1960 (hopefully will be fixed up soon) more

Be careful 5/24/2006

Grounds, buildings: good. Food: basic selection, average preparation. Service staff: good job. The problem wasn't them, unfortunately, it was the account manager and owner. We had a friend as a ""coordinator"" to help us out and to keep things running smoothly. Our account manager obviously viewed her as a threat and was extremely rude to her, even going so far as to accuse her of lying when we asked about an oversight. The cake was not at all what we agreed upon. We even provided photos of what we wanted and they were way off. At final billing, we noticed a discrepancy. After the owner grudgingly refunded what he owed, he told us we were too difficult to work with and the account manager acted professionally. There are other locations out there that can provide the same service without the poor attitude and service from management that Shirley Acres has. Pros: Grounds, variety of services Cons: Management, Cake/bakery, No att. to detail more
