probably best bookstore in Texas 4/9/2006

It's hard for me to pay full price for books when they are almost always available cheaper on Amazon. But Bookpeople inspires me to pay full price. First of all, the store is super browser friendly, quiet, and has a very helpful and knowledgable staff. The cards and gift section is great. The childrens section is great. The magazines section is the largest I've ever seen and has a better variety than any chain store. If you live in Austin, you should be shopping here. more

Book People for Full Priced Books! 3/24/2006

Barnes and Noble? Borders? Blah! If you live in Austin, it is your patriotic duty to patronize Book People, Austin's Heart of Books. They have a well trained and knowledgeable staff, a great selection of books (and magazines, my favorite), and a gigantic children's section that includes more than corporate-licensed character crap-stories. They're also a good source for gifts: notebooks, incense, religious icons, some toys, games and kitch. Go buy a book! more

Best book store in town 12/31/2005

Book People is easily the best book store I have ever been to. The staff is excellent and instantly knows where the book you're looking for is and they can special order anything if they do not have it in stock. They have wonderful special events for releases and have a great children's section. more

Fun for Story Time and Kids 10/31/2005

What a great area- right next to the Whole Foods playground, Seatle's Best Coffee, and tons of other shopping and fun. Book People Book Store is so much fun for your kids... Tues and Wed. Am at 10:30 they have a free story time with activities and/or songs. My son loves these times and loves to shop in the kids section and the toy section! Check it out! more

Awesome Family Bookstore! 10/13/2005

Bookpeople is such a great place for people of all ages. It has a specialized area just for kids that really adds to the experience (if the kids are happy………..). They have storytime on certain times and other activities. The staff is amazing and the selection for adults is great. They carry just about any book you’re looking for as well as gift ideas. Great place for the family to hang out! more

You need to come here! 10/6/2005

Book People is so unlike any other book stores. It's very unique and has a style of its own. I love hanging out here and browsing. They've also got lots of interesting unusual knick knacks around the store that you can look at. The customer service is very friendly and very knowledgable. I always enjoy looking at staff recommendations because they are always great books. You must visit this place! more

Non-Chain Bookstore! 9/6/2005

I have shopped at Book-People for several years and have found it to be a great, non-chain business, to purchase books. The staff is always friendly and helpful and the selection is always diverse. If they don't have your in stock they will be happy to order it for you and notify you when the product arrives. While this place does not have the coffee and sofas found in most chain bookstores, it feels to good to know you are supporting local businesses. Please remember Book People the next time you are in need of a good book! more

BookPeople 8/23/2005

BookPeople is a really great locally owned place to get books of all kinds. They have a nice children's area with a big stage. They do weekly storytimes too. We went to one of their bi-lingual storytimes and it was really fun. Their prices are about the same as B&N for new books. If you don't mind slightly beat-up children's books for half the price you should def. check out Half Price Books. more

The Largest Book Store In Texas 8/21/2005

The absolute best place in Austin to purchase books. Their selection is vast and of course the staff is great. You will find yourself there browsing longer than you thought and finding books that aren‘t on some best seller list but should be. I love reading books from unknown authors and have found this to be my best source. Be prepared, you will come home with your arms full. Their prices are fantastic! more

An wonderful book store 8/18/2005

Book people is an amazing book store, I first went there because I just need to go to Wholefood, it is beside the wholefood. I love there when I first stopped by, the employees are very nice, and they got a large collection, the environment is also good. A little complain is that it is crowded at the weekend. more

Nifty selection, knowledgeable staff. 8/18/2005

I ventured over to this bookstore since it was right next to Whole Foods at the time. It's a bit crowded, but they have plenty of selection with fabulous books on Austin and Texas. The staff is superb -- so very friendly and totally knowledgeable. My favorite part about this store is that gift wrapping is free for any purchase and on any day -- it's the perfect place to go for a last-minute birthday gift without having to worry about fancy bags, tissue paper, and scotch tape! A great addition to the city. more

Knowledgeable staff, local, overpriced 8/18/2005

This is possibly the most knowledgeable bookstore staff I have ever encountered. Certainly they surpass the staffs of larger chain bookstores. The children's book section has a great selection. Great storytelling/children's events are held there, but the seating area is ridiculously small for the number of people who show up. Half the time the kids get overwhelmed by all the people in such a cramped space and end up wanting to leave. At times the cramped space is so full of kids that you can't hear the storyteller for all the unavoidable noise. The storytelling staff is the best of any storytime in Austin, however. Austin pushes the support of local businesses aggressively, but unfortunately, the prices are often so unreasonable they make it impossible to avoid purchasing at the chains. I personally wouldn't mind paying higher prices in exchange for providing local support and patronizing such a knowledgeable (though sometimes snooty) staff, but the prices are beyond reasonable. I have seen books priced at nearly 50% more at Bookpeople than at chain stores. I'd rather go to Half Price Books. more

Reading with Book kinda people 8/17/2005

I recently visited Bookpeople Book Store on my way to the new Whole Foods, and I was pleased to find a great selection of books. They were awarded the Austin Chronicles: Best book store and Children's bookstore for 2004. I went into Bookpeople primarily to find some Keep Austin Weird shirts, but decided to stroll through the multi-story building. The place is very popular and the lines to check out were going through the store actually. I don't know if the book store is normally this packed on the weekends, but i was a little taken back. They're moto is "biggest bookstore in Texas;" however, I wasn't that impressed. They had a great selection of books, no doubt, but not too much different than say a Barnes and Nobel. Still, you should definitely check them out for your book needs if you are in the area or going to Whole Foods. more

Outstanding! 8/15/2005

Bookpeople is everything a bookstore should be. Books, lots of books. The biggest selection I have ever seen. I have never gone into Bookpeople looking for a specific title and not found it. The staff knows their stuff and if they don't have the title you're looking for (fat chance!) they will gladly order it to you. A great magazine section and coffee shop too! Bookpeople also seems to have an author there everyday! Sometimes I've heard of them (Bill Clinton!) and sometimes I haven't. The bookstore is really a disapearing destination these days and it's great to see Bookpeople carrying on the tradition! more

Great Book Store 8/15/2005

This is a great austin book store. The atmosphere is great, and all the employees are very knowledgeable about the books in their areas. They carry a wide selection of books, and will order the book you need if they do not have it. This is definitely the book store to go to, much better than your neighborhood barnes & noble. more

What a great place to hang out 8/4/2005

Book People is a great place to sit and relax. It is locally owned and unlike big chain bookstores, it's got a style of its own. In my opinion, Book People is part of what make Austin unique and original. Although the store itself may not be as big as Barnes and Noble or Borders, you may be surprised to find all the books you want. In addition to books, there are little unique displays and nick-nacks around the shop to keep you entertained as well. If you need some reading recommendations, you will find staff recommendations through out the store. The staffs are quite knowledgable and helpful too! Go visit Book People! Keep Austin Weird! more

Favorite Bookstore 8/2/2005

Book People is an awesome place. It is a huge store with a great variety and stock of books. You will definitely find what you are looking for at Book People. They also have a great children's section. They have many programs and live performances, too. I like how it has managed to keep its quaint personality among the giant conglomerate bookstores that are popping up everywhere. more

The Best Big Bookstore in Austin! 6/29/2005

This locally owned bookstore rivals the other biggies, and beats them hands down. With a large, two-story selection of books to choose from, you will either find what you are looking for (and some things that you didn't know that you were), or they will order it for you. There is a convenient coffee shop located in the store that serves up a yummy latte. Locally produced products, such as jewelry and candles are also offered. Frequent readings are given, making this the most happening bookstore in town. more
