Best

If you have never been to Clue Note you are missing out on some awesome jazz. We saw BB King jamming with Bobby McPherin, what a great night, totally drunk on a Saturday. blue Not...

Worst

this place is still good 11/2/2010

still a good place to catch up and coming talent. Drinks are pricey but you pay for the atmosphere. This place is cool. more

LEGENDARY 10/4/2010

Finest Jazz spot in NYC 3/29/2010

It's all about the vibes man! What more can I say about Blue Note...being an avid jazz fan for decades, I can honestly say this place continues the tradition of fine jazz music performed by deep-rooted jazz/r&b/soul musicians! P.S. And the food isn't bad either! lol Pros: Incredible vibes more

Music was awesome, shame about the experience. 9/14/2009

We went to an 8pm show and ate dinner with guests from out of town. The music was great - that's really what we went for - but the rest of the experience was almost an embarrassment. The service was poor - we felt like we were in a diner when dinner plates were slammed down in front of us - the food was average and definitely nothing special and the waitress treated us like anything we asked was too much trouble. I don't think we will take visitors again, and we definitely would not eat a meal there, especially when there are so many other great places close by. more

The Best! 8/29/2008

The Best! This is the place to always stop by and checkout someof the most profound and talented artists from all over the world! Pros: it's NY city Cons: it's NY city? more

Omarrr.....Omar Sosa 6/15/2008

Great performance...... loved every minute of the Omar Sosa show.....it was a priviledge to watch this virtuoso perform his music with such pure joy ( very present ,in the moment ). The musicians in the band were each extremely versatile and talented. I didn't have dinner at the club.... but I don't see anyone could say this place is "pricey" my friend and I paid $25 each for a great table about 10 feet from Omar Sosa and $8 bucks for a Heineken. I don't know where you come from...... but for the show we got thats not expensive at all ! The acoustics in the Blue Note are incredible..... its like listening to a live album on your ipod with Shure E5c earbuds. Omar said himself this place is like being in someones house. Pros: Acoustics ! Acoustics ! Acoustics ! Cons: None I can think of more

Legendary Venue with Great Perfomers 5/20/2008

I've been to Blue Note a few times. While it may be a bit pricey(what isn't in NYC), this is one of the premier jazz venues in the entire world. Everybody who's anybody has played this stage at one time or another. The acoustics are very good as well. As far as the last review calling Ron Carter boring....hmmm. Maybe that person didn't catch the right show but Ron Carter is a legend and has played with everyone from Miles Davis to Bill Evans to even James Brown. The statement of, "while he is good on the Bass you don't usually hear alot of Bass solos." Once again........hmmmm. Almost every jazz show I've been to has a series of bass solos throughout the performance, some longer than others but still, that's jazz! Oh well, can't please everyone. Pros: Acoustics, Performers more

Boring!!! 4/22/2008

When I see the word JAZZ I think of toe tapping and fun. This was not it!! Ron Carter was playing and while he is good on the Bass you don't usually hear alot of Bass solos. One of the people fell asleep it was so depressing. The music would have been good for a wake!! I guess I just didn't get it but I really associate jazz witha little more up tempo music than solo Bass more

Great Jazz and Great Food 2/25/2008

When walking into the Blue Note one feels the historical significance of this legendary jazz club. I would recommend spending the extra money to actually get a seat rather than standing in the back at the very crowded bar. There is a minimum but skip having dinner before hand and grab a cocktail and a burger and listen to the modern giants of jazz. Pros: Jazz, food, drinks Cons: can get pricey more

jazz club 11/1/2007

Went on a Thursday night at 22.30 to see Amel Larrieux. She played for almost 2 hours. Great performance, great audience and great atmosphere. The $5 drink minimum is no problem as drinks start at $8. Service was good. Table setting is tight, everyone is sitting opposite of each other. Seems strange at the start but you get used to it quickly. My first visit couldn't have been better. Pros: Ambience Cons: Long waiting time in front of the club more

World's best jazz club, hands down. 5/16/2007

I've been to jazz clubs all over the world, and when I travel, it's the first thing I look up. If I ever get a place in New York it will be close to the Blue Note. The music is the best in the city - last year I saw Etta James, Chick Corea, Chris Botti, Arturo Sandoval.....where else can you see these people at a tiny place? If you love jazz, this is the place to be. more

Intimate 11/1/2006

Great music, good service and a relaxed attitude. It's rare to order tickets online and not have to pay a service charge. Pros: Ambience, service Cons: parking, very small more

Total lack of consideration 10/14/2005

We went to the Blue Note one night. Upon arrival we were told that the first row was reserved so we moved further back. Well, sometime later the allow those seating nearby seat on said row. The host did not even have the courtesy of letting those that came in early to move up. I would never visit this place again. more

The best in the world 10/8/2005

The Blue Note is by far the best jazz club in the world. This year alone Ive seen the following shows: Ron Carter, Chick Corea, Cassandra Wilson, and McCoy Tyner. A few weeks back I was at the Jimmy Scott show and Elton John sat in. The following week George Benson sat in with James Carters band. You really never know what to expect at the Blue Note. The seating is very tight but this is not a bad thing. The intimacy of this club is what makes it so special. You literally sit feet away from the performers. Ive been to the other jazz clubs in town and the Blue note is very reasonably priced comparatively. The minimum at the tables is only $5. The drinks are not outrageous and the all inclusive <$20 brunch show on Sundays is a steal. more

Quite Dissapointing 9/30/2005

Saw Bebel Gilberto last evening. She sounded wonderful. Could not see her though. The Blue Note seats six to a small table, with the tables so tight together that as people maneuver and strain to see past eachothers heads they continually knock heads, jab elbows into ribs, etc. I really felt suckered after paying the highest ticket price I've ever payed for a small venue. Expect stangers at your table, and pray they've showered! I will not be going back. Pros: The Acts, The Staff, The Location Cons: Tight Seating, Overcrowding more

Poor service and a rude host 3/26/2005

The Blue Note has good jazz but their staff are snooty, slow and downright rude. If you're a jazz fan there are lots of great jazz places in the neighborhood. If you can tolerate the waitstaff and care just about the jazz the Blue Note is where its at. Pros: Good Jazz, Good atmosphere Cons: Rude Host, Poor Service, Slow Service more

Living off a reputation 7/1/2004

OK, my rating's a bit harsh, but this joint has no redeeming qualities...except for a well-kept men's room. more

Hit the 12:30 showing 1/30/2004

This place has tons of great and interesting jazz. Go for the late nite shows, in my opinion you will find the best yound musicians at that time trying to make it big. Tickets are only 5 bucks and it's open seating and no drink min. Their sets are the longest b/c there is nobody after them. Sometimes they play for hours. more

Solid Choice 5/23/2003

I saw Taj Mahal last night at the Blue Note and was not dissapointed. The service was terrific and the atmophere was wonderful. It's a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. The crowd was also interested in the music and you could tell, unlike places like B.B. King's where tourists want to talk through anything. Pros: Great mood, Excellent service, Good crowds Cons: Expensive more

Perfect for jazz lovers 2/9/2003

Parking rigth across the street; I sugest to make reservations (just in case..); nice bar but few seats; tables are close to the stage except bar' seats; plenty of diferent kind of drinks; very few wine selection; food should be served at least 15 minutes before the show (not during the show); nice coustomers; it is not romantic when the place is full (you have to share the table). Pros: friendly atmosphera, nice & clean, good food & wine Cons: few seats at the bar more

Editorial
  • The Scene
It has only been around since the mid-'80s, but it feels like the Blue Note has been on West 3rd Street forever. Once you get past a lot of trappings--the grand piano awning, the Las Vegas-y interior, steep cover charge, overstuffed gift shop, mediocre meals named after great jazz songs, some clueless tourists and expense-account patrons--the Blue Note is truly a world-class jazz joint.

    The Draw
The club attracts some of the biggest names jazz has ever known, and the abundant staff makes sure that when the music begins, the chatter--often in a dozen languages--comes to a dead silence. The booking policy is eclectic and often outstanding--Oscar Peterson didn't play nightclubs until the Blue Note threw piles of cash at him, and Cecil Taylor and Elvin Jones hadn't played together at all before a landmark series of recent late-night duets.
