Best

If you have never been to Clue Note you are missing out on some awesome jazz. We saw BB King jamming with Bobby McPherin, what a great night, totally drunk on a Saturday. blue Not...

Worst

We went to an 8pm show and ate dinner with guests from out of town. The music was great - that's really what we went for - but the rest of the experience was almost an embarrassme...

Too Much - Too Little 1/13/2003

Was there for Manhattan Transfer and Sergio Mendez in Fall'02. When fully populated, it is very hard to enjoy the music. God forbid you show up late and take a fill-in seat after everyone else has staked out their territory - you will get cramps trying to see the performance. But the service, given the conditions, was outstanding. I would never intentionally go to the BN, unless the performance justified the agony. If you are in the area, and come across a night when the music is good, and it's not crowded, I would partake. more

Great Moods 11/25/2002

The atmosphere is just what I expected -- very, very cool-- that is - the ambience is PERFECT for listening to great music. Up close & personal--- such professionals- we were entertained by Manhattan Transfer. I can't wait to see more shows! Pros: close to subway, very good food, superb entertaining Cons: expensive more

too expensive 11/13/2002

the cover charge is always too expensive, tables crowded together, very overcommercialized Pros: good sound, good performers Cons: too expensive, tables crowded togeth more

Always Good 11/11/2002

This is the best place in NYC to see and hear great jazz. Yes, the seats are a bit cramped, but it's a small club which provides an intimate setting so the audience has an up close experience with the performers. Additionally, the food and drinks are always terrific! Pros: Great Jazz, Good Food, Good Drinks Cons: Tight Seating more

the city of jazz has its center at the blue note, with legends and legends-to-be performing nightly. Pros: great location!, good lineup Cons: too small!, expensive more

Best jazz in town 7/19/2002

Big jazz fan. Been to all the clubs of New York. Nothing beats this one. Pros: great acts, not a big place Cons: reserve for good seat more

Editorial
  • The Scene
It has only been around since the mid-'80s, but it feels like the Blue Note has been on West 3rd Street forever. Once you get past a lot of trappings--the grand piano awning, the Las Vegas-y interior, steep cover charge, overstuffed gift shop, mediocre meals named after great jazz songs, some clueless tourists and expense-account patrons--the Blue Note is truly a world-class jazz joint.

    The Draw
The club attracts some of the biggest names jazz has ever known, and the abundant staff makes sure that when the music begins, the chatter--often in a dozen languages--comes to a dead silence. The booking policy is eclectic and often outstanding--Oscar Peterson didn't play nightclubs until the Blue Note threw piles of cash at him, and Cecil Taylor and Elvin Jones hadn't played together at all before a landmark series of recent late-night duets.
