Bad brunch 5/18/2008

Their brunch was horrrrrrrrrrrrrrible. I was so disappointed. How can you screw up brunch? Cold food? Check. Wilted vegetables? Check. The waiters were nice. That's about the only good thing. Would not go back for brunch. more

Outstanding 100th birthday party 5/14/2008

Bait and Switch 5/11/2008

Saw the great reviews and decided based on the Sunday Brunch menu that this would be a great place to go for Mother's Day. Big mistake. Prior to going we called and we told that that the regular brunch menu would be available with the possiblitly of the pricing going up from 12.95 to 16.95 a la carte unlimited mimosa, coffee and tea. The price when from 12.95 to 18.95, with one mimosa and the menu got cut down to a third. At the end of it all, I spend $25 on a small bowl of fruit, a burger and a salad. \r \r Yes, the ambience is nice but that is it! Service is poor! MOther's day menu was ridiculous to say the least! Pros: Ambience Cons: memu was change and price jacked up. more

great disappointment 5/3/2008

Attended a Saturday brunch party at Black Pearl at which the whole restaurant was booked for the party. I had read prior reviews and was looking forward to this party. Highly recommended was the eggs benedict with bacon and all reviews stated 3 eggs on english muffins. First of all there were just 2 3ggs. The party was scheduled from 12 noon till 3 pm and the food did not come out till 2:00 - 2:15 pm. The only time a waiter came around was to ask what you wanted to eat. No one ever came to ask if you wanted a drink - coffee, tea, etc. (there were liquor drinks included on the menu). The food came out cold. The cake came out of the kitchen at 2:45 leaving no time for some people who had scheduled rides to go home at 3:00 pm when the party was scheduled to end. I was totally disappointed and would not recommend this restaurant to anyone who tells me they want to go there. Pros: Good ambience Cons: terrible service more

Great Place for a Party! 3/14/2008

We just held our wedding reception at Black Pearl and absolutely loved it! The restaurant has a beautful, warm feel and has a great set up for a party with both a wine cellar and a long bar. We wanted a low key, Brooklyn feeling with excellent food and that's exactly what we got! We also received lots of complements from our guests about the food, the decor and the excellent service. We spent a lot of time with the owners, Rob and Bob, in planning for the event- and they were incredibly flexible, accomadating and really nice to work with. They even created a whole dessert bar- with mini-cupcakes, tartuffo and cookies that everyone loved. They planned a great party for us, and made it really easy for us to just enjoy the day- confident that they were taking care of everthing. We can't wait to go back for dinner- and highly recommend this as a great, unknown party place! Pros: Ambience, Food, Service more

CAUTION: 18% Tip Added to All Checks 3/8/2008

CAUTION: This restaurant adds a gratuity of 18% to all checks, regardless of the number of people in your party. I have never encountered this policy before, and understand that it is illegal unless it's clearly posted (which it's not). They also charge separately for mixers in drinks. Order a gin and tonic, and you pay for the gin, and you also pay for the tonic separately.\r \r Otherwise, an OK spot among a field of terrific Park Slope contenders. Pros: Food, Booths Cons: 18% Tip Added to All Checks more

Comfortable Place, With Great Food and Service 1/20/2008

This restaurant is really worth it. My favorites are the Ceaser Salad, and Penne al a Vodka. The booths are really comfortable and the waiters and waitresses are friendly and always try to please the customer. There are also really nice, clean bathrooms. With exposed brick walls and a sleek bar, you feel comfortable but not overwhelmed. With low music and colorful art this is a perfect place for a date, or a family dinner. Pros: Nice Decor, service and food Cons: dimly lit more

Excellent food/Huge portions//Warm atmosphere/Priced right 12/30/2007

My wife and I were searching for a place for a Sweet 16th party and came across The Black Pearl Bar & Grill at 833 Union Street, Brooklyn, NY. What we discovered was this rich cozy Tuscany atmosphere with a long bar with a brick oven. We were warmly greeted by Maitre Damiano who made us feel at home. He suggested the arugula salad with walnuts and goats cheese which was delicable. On the table was a generous portion of focaccia with brushetta from their brick oven which I could not stop eating. Next was a very huge plate of lobster Bisque which I may add is one of my favorites. Next we tasted Lobster Ravioli in a cream sauce which was awesome. Followed was a huge zesty tangy crab cake over a bed of vegetables. As you can see I like to eat and have a passion for food. The wines are excellent as well as the beer on tap. Needless to say after this sumptuous meal and meeting with our Host Rob we did book the Sweet 16 party. This is an excellent place for dinners & parties. There is a parking lot across the street. This indeed is the best kept secret in Brooklyn, but not for long. Pros: Everything more

Comfy Cozy with Good Food and Service 12/10/2007

It's just different! I have eaten in may places from Bay Ridge to Park Slope to the UES. This is one of the few places I actually enjoyed dining in. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable, the art work is unique(Di Blazian),the lighting is very different and the brick oven is unusual.\r But let's get to the real stuff! There is a great selection of soups and tapas to start your meal. I very much enjoyed the seared tuna as well as the proscuitto wrapped shrimp. My partner ordered the trio fish entree(salmon, tilapia, shrimp) and I had ordered the lobster seafood platter.\r Both of us agreed that we have not found many reasonably priced restaurants (NYC or Brooklyn)with flavor as our meals were cooked with.\r If you dine out as much as we do or dine out just periodically this place\r is a welcome surprise. Our waiter Eddie also made us feel like right at home. He was not over bearing but yet he was prompt with food and drink.\r Hope this place is around for a long time! Pros: Good food fairly priced in a great atmosphere more

SECRET SPECIALS ! 11/23/2007

Visited Black Pearl Thanksgiving day with my mom and dad. They had a nice pre fix menu for Thanksgiving\r There was a choice of a turkey, ham or lamb entree in addition to the regular menu (good choice of apps, salads, also fish, meat and pasta entrees). One of the secrets about this place are THE SPECIALS !\r I had the pancetta wrapped chicken medallions which was one of the specials (but the procutto wrapped \r pork loin sounded real good too!) My mom and dad's turkey was nice and moist and the marshmellow glazed sweet potatoes were delicious.\r The atmosphere was warm and cozy and people seemed as though they did not mind waiting at the bar for a seat to dine. Then service was precise, prompt and very accomodating and the wine list was solid. It was also nice to see the chef visit many of the tables including ours !\r Don't miss this one it seems to be something pretty special ! Pros: Specials, Specials and more Specials ! more

Not so Good!! 9/23/2007

We went in for the burgers, bad Idea. We ordered 2 burgers well done. It was bloody when they brought them. Asked to cook it more, they cooked the lettuce more and not the burger still all pink. and now the lettuce is hot & wilted, and the bun is falling apart. Took it back for the third time there was no more bun , or cheese left on it. disgusting . I think they use to have good burgers but they have changed their meat therefore its not very good. We had also ordered a $16 tuna burger which was composed of bits of grilled tuna. Not worth it.\r I don't know about anything else they serve but burgers are awful here. And the waiter had bad attitude for not wanting a bloody burger.\r Would not recommend this place at all. Cons: bad food more

Black Pearl has it all! 7/23/2007

Our first time and it will certaintly not be our last, and we came to the city from connecticut. Thank you Black Pearl for a wonderful evening. The food was superb! Fried Calamari for appatizer, Mushroom stuffed ravioli to ""die for"" doubble cut pork chop ""wow!"" and the special, half a lobster, mussles and shrimp over linguini, amazing!!. The service was by far the best we have experianced any where in a long time, thank you Jullian!! Also a nice surprise when the owner stopped by our booth to say ""hello and welcome"", and if thant wasn'ta ""classy touch"", the chef himself also stopped by to see how we were enjoying our dinners!! To sum up our evening, awsome food, awsome service, great atmosphere and great prices, will definately make the trip from Ct. again (soon) more

SERVICE AND FOOD WORKED HAND AND HAND!!!! 7/8/2007

""Best Brunch"". My family and I decided to take my father out this past Sunday for a belated Fathers Day brunch. Well I must admit the decor as well as the service and food went hand and hand. Our waitress was very attentive and never had to ask once for a refill (UNLIMITED BLOODY MARY'S, MIMOSAS, AND CHAMPANGNE). The food was a nice size portion, (Hey guys, the Bacon Benedict has 3 eggs), and was nicely presented. The place was pretty packed and the 80's music was pumping. The only thing that I was dissapointed in was the outdoor seating was all taken. Maybe I will have better luck next time. Pros: Great Service, Diverse Crowd!! Cons: Not enough outdoor seating more

loved it 6/29/2007

The service was great, the food was amazing, the drinks topped the whole night off, making this dinner incredible for my girlfriend and I. I highly recommend this restaurant, you wont regret it! Cons: none! more

Hummm...My favorite ...argentinian steak 6/27/2007

Never had artinian food. So when I heard argentinian steak I wanted to try it. It's rice, beans, long piece of meat and a sauce that looks like aoli base. I must say it was awesome. I was suprised and ordered it every other time I went to the Black Pearl since May 2007. Thumbs up. Make sure you know how you like you steak and ask the exact cooking intensity otherwise you will miss out on the greatest steak in Brooklyn.\r \r 2 thumbs up from the food connaisseur and the great chef I am at home lol. will definatly keep coming here...May be i'll try something else soon :)). Who knows. Pros: Ambience, drinks, staff and the food I tried was awesome. Cons: not made for children more
