I feel privileged to say that I was there for lunch when the Berghoff closed its doors for the last time. Whether it was the cafe, the bar, or the actual restuarant, the Berghoff...

Beer good, Food Nah 3/5/2006

This place has a long history in Chicago and it comes with high recommendation from most of my friends. They do have great beer and polite staff. I love German food and was all excited about trying it here.I ordered something called chicken schnitzel, which came looking and tasting something like chicken parmesian. I liked it, but I wanted German food and it just didn't meet my expectations. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing. more

Berghoff Restaurant 2/27/2006

The Berghoff Restaurant is a Chicago landmark in the heart of the loop. Not only do they have great beer (which is available for purchase both in the restaurant and at city distributors) but they have also have an impressive German-inspired menu. This is not the restaurant to visit if you just want a salad, but I'm sure it would be just as great as everything else they serve. I heard some sad news recently that the Berghoff will be closing its doors after many, many years of business. So get yourself over to the Berghoff before it's too late! more

For meat lovers!! 11/28/2005

It's one of the oldest restaurants in Chicago and has a real German taste. If you like meat (not just beef) you will like this restaurant. Portion sizes and prices are reasonable. They have a special selection during the October Fest. It hasn't been renovated for some time but you will feel like the environment. Also, the waiters do not bother you by jumping into every conversation you started. more

Great German food 8/30/2005

The Berghoff is a great Chicago restaurant. The food is good and plentiful. The service is excellent. Your water glass will be refilled all the time without your even noticing. It's perfect for lunch or dinner, from meeting with casual friends to a formal celebration. And the prices are amazing considering it's downtown - a perfect place to take a big group of people because you'll actually be able to afford the bill. The cost will vary greatly based on what you order and whether you have dessert, drinks, etc. The dessert is worth trying to. Also, as a quaint aspect, next door to the main restaurant is an old-fashioned (just because it never changed) stand-up deli - you can get sandwiches made quickly - still German food - and either take it to go or eat it standing up at high tables. more

Berghoff's 8/19/2005

I used to work in a building near Dearborn and Monroe, and one of the things I still miss the most is that the Berghoff was only about a block away from work. I ended up eating lunch there so many times that I lost count.......:=) The Berghoff has been there for eons; I believe they have the first restaurant license ever issued by the city of Chicago. They have the traditional German dishes, but they also have a lot of lighter dishes on the menu, as well as sandwiches. For those who like beer, Berghoff does have a fine selection, including their own Berghoff beer (which is brewed in Wisconsin for them by one of the breweries up there) (no, not Miller). And they always have an Oktoberfest, where they block off Adams between State and Dearborn, but for some reason they have it in September.......and now writing about all of this I wish I had some of their creamed spinach as well as their apple streudel.......:=) more

Best German in Chicago 8/11/2005

Family-owned and operated for over 100 years, The Berghoff Restaurant offers a unique dining experience in the heart of Chicago's Loop. Neighboring Mies van der Rohe's Federal center on Adams Street, between Dearborn and State, the turn-of-the-century building and its Old World ambience suggest a vivid history and an enduring presence. From The Berghoff's beginnings as a cafe featuring Berghoff Beer to today's full-service restaurant, The Berghoff has become a favorite destination for generations of diners from Chicago and around the world. more
