I have taken my 2005 X3 to Darby twice and have been very pleased both times. We have returned to the Portland area and have found a home base!\r Prices were fair, and nothing was done without knowing ahead of time! My vehicle was done when when it was supposed to be at a very decent price! more

Jan 13, 2014\r Here's my story..\r Brought my 2001 325i to Autohaus Bayern in June 2013 for a noise in the engine area..Well, $1200 later they said my motor mounts were loose + my radiator and ALL the hoses needed to be replaced asap and especially in this hot weather my car won't survive. Ok, so I trusted his evaluation and opionion. Had it done like I said $1200 later.\r Later on my low coolant light poped up. I purchase some coolant, my husband fills it and said the booble wasn't even up to the top level. Mean while they insist they fill and top everything off for you. NOT.\r My oil light was on and asked Darby why, Darby said it would reset when you get an oil change. I got an oil change from them at the sum of $115 (fyi portland bmw is only $89) the light was STILL on, so he forgot to check the sensor for the oil light AND they never even reset the oil data information so I could know when to have it changed again. \r Darby said I needed an alignment, but to get tires first, ok then. I looked at all my paper work for the bmw from the prior owner to see what size tires he purchased only to find out a year and half ago of Autohaus replacing ALL my radiator, hoses etc. the previous owner had already done ALL of that!! I was mad and called Darby and asked why, he said well how much was their radiator..like that matters and it was only a few dollars less then his anyway! He gave me some cockeyed answer and we hung up. He called me back to tell me he made a note on what the diaognosis was and asked how many miles were on the car...REALLY, Darby! You didn't even make a note of how many miles are on my car, let alone the diagnosis! And I thought that was just standard procedure! Wow.\r So case and point, they don't know what their doing most of the time! I won't ever go back or refer another sole and I will tell my story to who ever will listen. I don't take advantage of anyone and I certainly don't want to be!\r Rachelle more

I took my 12-year old, recently-purchased Audi for a second opinion after I was advised I needed considerable work before I went on a road trip. New clutch, many gaskets, and steering overall were all suggested. Autohaus said definitely no to the clutch, no to the gaskets, and improved the steering-related squeak with some lubricant. The bill was $110 which was considerably less than we had expected. We then went on a 2600 mile car journey. The car was great. I was very impressed that these guys were spot on with their advice and did not suggest unnecessary work. I will return to them when I need repairs confident that they will steer me straight. more

Trustworthy & friendly quick service 12/29/2011

I have been taking my 98 328i here for over 7 years after being fed up with dealerships.........Fast, honest & convenient service. Darby is fair & suggests maintenance items keeping my car running in top shape! I too have had the gas cap issue......what is with these German cars being so touchy? more

Exceptional Service 3/28/2011

As an owner of two BMWs, I needed to find a non-dealer place to get my cars repaired. My 2001 X-5 had been at the dealer many times to stop the 'Check Engine' light that kept coming on. The dealer had told me I needed to train every gas station attendant to put the gas cap on correctly????? (I'm sure I'm going to do that). I stopped by Autohaus and Darby spotted the problem immediately. He said ""Go to the nearest dealer and buy a new gas cap. You can get it cheaper there than I can sell it to you. Bring it back and I will help replace it and check to see if it would solve the problem."" It did, and he didn't charge me a cent for his time or assistance. I was hooked. I have had both my cars there often (not sure it is their issues, more likely just the nature of German built cars). As much as I hate to keep spending money on my cars, I do feel that Autohaus offers the best advice, courtesy, and professional attention of any car repair company I have ever worked with. more

Great Service, Price, & Friendly 1/1/2011

Having just recently moved to the Portland Metro area and re-entering the German car realm (I purchased a used 2000 BMW 328Ci) I asked around for service recommendations. Of course the two local dealers came up (both with good recommendations BTW), but not really what I was after for an older car (i.e., out of warranty etc.). I finally got the recommendation I was looking for from Beaverton Auto Upholstery (another GREAT repair shop) -- Autohaus Bayern. I've now had the pleasure (yes, ""pleasure"" and I don't use that word often in reference to auto repair shops) of having work done at the Bayern; a couple of minor issues (most recently an intermittent signal light) and an annual service that ended up including a water pump replacement (along with the belts etc. since they had it apart and I'm close to the 100,000 service). In all, yes ALL, visits I have been totally impressed by the courteous and professional service, the on-time repair (it was done either when they said it would be or sooner), and the prices. For example, when doing the water pump they didn't charge me double shop time for the belt replacements; i.e., shop time for the water pump and then again shop time for the belts. (I've had bad experiences with dealerc, NOT here in PDX but else where, where this double-dipping was done.) So, what else can I say except that if you've a German car you really own to it and yourself to check out Autohaus Bayern! Most sincerely, Dr. David Rule more

Mixed Feelings 5/26/2010

I've taken my BMW to at least 3 other repair shops around Portland and I have Mixed feelings on Auto Haus. They really take the time to explain to you what they replaced and what kinds of symptoms you should have been experiencing. HOWEVER, they don’t typically communicate the side of the car well and often replace things that don’t need replacing.\r \r I recently needed to replace a ball joint on the passenger side front control arm. The original shop I took it too called this the “right” side of the car (standard for the car industry is if you’re inside the car). I thought this was the same part I replaced only a year ago so I called up Auto Haus and talked to them. They side it should be a straight forward warranty issue and would most likely be free. So I took my car back into Auto Haus only to find out the part they replaced was the “left” or Driver side. Auto Haus was going to replace the ENTIRE control arm costing about $560. DynaSport was able to just replace the bushings and the ball joint saving me $450! \r \r My advice to Auto Haus is don’t replace things that don’t need replacing just because it’s easier or you get more money out of it. \r Pros: take the time to explain what they replaced and symptoms Cons: often replace things that don’t need replacing. more

EXCELLENT BMW Service 1/15/2010

After getting tired of paying dealership prices for years, I started looking for a good independent shop to take care of my 2002 BMW X5. Autohaus Bayern ended up being my shop of choice in Portland. They always get my car in right away, provide me with excellent, professional service, and are extremely competitive in their pricing. I've been to them numerous times, and they continue to impress me every time. They stand by there work without question, and I couldn't recommend them more highly. Great, friendly service, expert maintenance, and very reasonable prices are what you can expect to find at Autohaus Bayern. Pros: Reasonable Price, Fast, friendly service Cons: N/A more

Best place on westside for German and Swedish autos! 8/14/2009

This is by far the best auto repair shop I've ever been associated with! Darby and Teri run a great operation and truly care about doing the right thing for their clients. I love the service and how they take time to explain everything to make sure you understand what's going on with your auto. My wife and I only began taking our VW and Saab there recently, but they quickly won us over and we'll continue bringing our autos there. You can trust them for sure and it's evident in the number of satisfied clients they have. I love those guys!! Pros: Friendly staff, great service, nice waiting area more

The best German car service shop in Portland! 6/13/2009

Honestly, five stars are not enough for Autohaus Bayern. They are hands down the best shop in Portland for German cars! I've been taking my 1997 BMW 528i there for over 5 years. Nearly 100,000 of the 150,000+ miles on the car have been serviced by Autohaus Bayern. We've been through a lot; oil services, inspections, breaks, radiators, thermostats, auxiliary fans, vacuum pumps, etc... The service from Autohaus Bayern is always the best and their prices are fair and reasonable. The crew at Autohaus Bayern always makes sure you know what's going on with your car - they are detailed and thorough in their communication and recommendations. Even on the most difficult problems, like an unusual overheating issue that took a lot of diagnosing and several visits to find, Autohaus Bayern's professionalism and commitment to service was exceptional. They were determined to find the problem and fix it - which they did exceptionally well. I truly can't say enough good things about Autohaus Bayern and the crew there. They are friendly and professional - truly great mechanics. My advice is to call or stop by and see what they can do for you. P.S. - Tell them Travis sent you ;-) Pros: Professional, honest and friendly Cons: None experienced in over 5 years more

Service and An Education 5/27/2009

My wife and I appreciate that she can take in her 2005 ML500 for top quality and professional service. The staff at Autohaus is always willing to take extra time to explain any car related issue. They prices are very reasonable compared to dealer shops with more personal attention. Thanks for making a difference for your customers. Pros: Excellent service and willingness to take extra time. Cons: n/a more

Clean Waiting Room, Friendly Service 3/31/2009

It's a joy to have my car maintained by the great people at this auto repair shop. They are always glad to see me and explain exactly what they can do to fix or maintain my favorite car. If you are searching for an excellent German car repair shop, I highly recommend them. Pros: Knowledgable staff, best advice always more

Questionalble Diagnosis or Truthyness 4/29/2008

Dropped car off due to Service light issue. Was told by the friendly staff that I needed head gaskets replaced and intake system resealed due to leaks at the manifold. total $5500.00. I almost had them do it. They seemed to be very professional and have a very clean and nice waiting room with free coffee. My wife demanded I get a couple other professional opinions. I took it to the dealer and asked for their take on the long list that Autohaus Bayern insisted I needed done. After $300 the dealer (Kuni) gave me a statement saying that there is NO Evidence of a compromised head gasket. Further they did the same intake test as Autohause Bayern (smoke test) to see if they could find the leak that Authause Bayern found THEY FOUND NO SUCH LEAK. Bottom line is that the MAF needed to be replaced ($289). OK here is where against my better judgment I decided to get another non dealer opinion. This time I withheld any prior diagnostics and simply told the service tech about the Service Light. T more

Autohaus questionalble ethics 4/25/2008

OK let me start by saying this is my fourth used BMW & like all the others given me plenty of great driving. I understand that these cars have there quirks & need the extra love they earn. I am no stranger to leaking Power steering hoses, coolant leaks in tough spots to fix, intake vac leaks and ""touchy"" Service engine soon lights. Pros: Freindly Staff Cons: Ethics or bad diagnostics more

Best BMW shop I've ever used! 4/21/2008

I've owned a 1989 750iL for the last 17 years. I've been to Kuni and 4 or 5 indy shops in that period. Kuni's fine, of course, but the dealer pricing is just too much for me. more

Trustworthy, Customer Service that goes above and beyond the call of duty, quality repairs at reasonable rates 4/3/2008

My wife and I have used Autohaus to service our 1995 BMW 318is for years always with great results. Recently, we couldn't get the car to start after letting it sit for several months near some bushes. We later discovered that ants had set up a nest in the engine computer and who knows where else. In any event, Darby went out of his way to work with us for nearly a month as we tried to figure out what we wanted to do with this car that had fully served its useful life (the engine computer wasn't the only problem). Darby was honest, straightforward, and gave us all of our options up front which included selling the car to a third-party BMW parts buyer unrelated to Autohaus even though he knew if we sold it, he and the shop would be out the hundreds or thousands of dollars that we were planning to spend on repairs. We decided to sell the car to the BMW parts buyer. Darby gave us the phone number, called and spoke with the buyer, and let us leave the car on Autohaus property even though he knew we weren't going to have anymore work done on it. I was so impressed with his approach to customer service and professional advice as to what was in our best interest that I tried to give him $50 as a thank you for being the rare kind of business person who still believes in putting the customer first even if it costs you money in the short term. He said thanks but refused to take the money from me. He said something about the fact that many people in his life had done right by him and he was just ""paying it forward."" There's a lot to learn about Darby in just that last sentence. That's the kind of guy you can trust, the kind of guy who is going to make sure you are well taken care of. I'm a dentist and my wife is an attorney, and we are proud to recommend Darby and the Autohaus to anyone who wants professional quality repairs at non-dealership repair rates. Autohaus will have our business for years to come. Pros: Clean waiting area, Trustworthy, Reasonable rates, Customer's Best Interest is Priority One Cons: None experienced in our four year history with them more
