Had a great time 7/13/2009

Loved this place! Got there just as it opened for lunch. The chef was stuck on the subway and the owner came out to explain and offer drinks while we waited. The waitress was fantastic. The peolple watching as we waited on comfy sofas outside made the time pass quickly. The food was great and prices comparable to other big city restaurants we have been too. The staff was so friendly, I would recommend this place to my friends. Pros: Excellent staff - good food Cons: A bit disorganized more

Ehh... Ok 6/10/2009

My boyfriend and I went to this restaurant for Dinner. I must admit we hated the mushroom soup, BUT the waiter (who was absolutely awesome) saw we weren't really touching the soup and offered to bring out a different kind at no additional cost. The soup he brought out was really good and we both ate every bite. The entree was ok too, but the price is definitely on the high end. The atmosphere was nice though.... The experience was definitely...different. Pros: They saw we weren't satisfied and tried their best to fix it Cons: Expensive, Small portions more

terrible expensive food 5/25/2009

I went to Anjou for a lunch with a friend. The potstickers were drenched in oil and tasted as if they were frozen and reheated. The accompanying sauce would have been bad for Trader Joe's frozen food. I ordered the salad special which was what had drawn us there -- mixed greens with mangoes, tomato, and fresh mozzarella. There was barely any fresh mozzarella, the tomatoes had clearly been frozen because they were still icy, and the mangoes were brown. The portion was small and I was charged $14. My friend ordered 3 rolls of sushi which were mediocre at best. She also ordered 2 ice teas which tasted funny and was charged $3 for each (waitress did not tell us refills were not free). This lunch came to $60 before tip. Most overpriced bad meal I've had in Philadelphia. Cons: overpriced, food quality more

Ridiculous 4/10/2009

Not sure what the owners of Anjou are thinking. I went there for an early dinner in Old City and they informed about the martini specials. The ""special"" was a mini Martini for 7 dollars of shelf vodka or gin. Kettle one in the miniglass was 9.75. What in gods name are they thinking? Food was basic Asian-Fusion. Good, solid sushi, but small portions. Word to the owners: you cannot compete when you have overpriced portions and tiny watered down drinks. No Wonder your place had 8 people at 630 happy hour. Since you have a worn out theme, you need to seperate yourself from the pack. We went right around the corner to Buddakhan where they dont skimp on drinks or food. Pros: Nice service Cons: small overpriced portions and drinks more

You want mashed potatoes with that? 3/1/2009

My friends ordered the ""Chilean Sea Bass w/ Tarot puree, heart of palm salad, atop a miso glaze [26],"" ""Pan Seared Red Chile Norwegian Salmon, Sweet peas & couscous in a sun dried tomato, red pepper sauce [22],"" ""Bi Bim Bap- A medley of vegetable & egg julienne, served with two traditional Korean sauces and a bowl of miso soup (available without beef) [16]."" I opted for the ""French Cut Chicken Breast, Wasabi gnocchi, wild mushrooms, & asparagus in a sweet garlic ginger sauce [22].""\r \r They had no gnocchi and tried to push the mashed potatoes. I can make that at home for a dollar. No thanks. So they said they can do risotto. Fine, no biggie.\r \r One friend had ordered the salmon because of the couscous. She had been craving couscous all day and was very excited that they had it on the menu. When we finally received our entrees after an hour, She received a plate looking very barren with a piece of salmon the size and shape of a sleeve of laffy taffys and NO COUSCOUS. \r \r The chilean sea bass was NOT served with mashed taro and hearts of palm salad. Just a ring of MASHED POTATOES. Maybe I should have asked what ""french cut"" meant because now I know that it means ""slice a chicken breast as thin and flat as possible to try to cover the plate and keep down costs."" My wild mushrooms must've gone loco because they were nowhere on my plate. Maybe they were partying it up with my asparagus because they were also m.i.a. My risotto? Oh it was there all right, resting on my plate like a pale, sticky dome of something that resembled MASHED POTATOES! Since when is it okay to be able to scoop risotto with an ice cream scooper??\r \r We were told ""they ran out of the couscous, & the mashed taro"" AND the gnocchi? And the wild mushrooms? What exactly do you have back there besides mashed potatoes? \r \r We left without eating and went to soho pizza down the street for better quality food at 2.50 a slice. Pros: They have a bathroom. Cons: bad food for absurd prices, sneaky tricks to save costs like MASHED POTATOES as the only side! more

Anjou has some Indentity Issues................. 2/5/2009

Got there at 6:00pm and the place was completely empty all but a few people at the extremely prominent bar that takes up the majority of one sides of the room. The interior was typical Old City; old brick industrial space, and hard to transform with a few token Asian influences. It was bright and pop music playing, and continued to play over top of the three televisions, hunting, sports and the news, and just like any pub in town there was a gentleman loudly discussing the programs with the bartender.\r \r I had Miso Soup and Filet Mignon. My wife ordered something they were out of and settled for Strip Steak. I was surprised that with a menu that contained four Entrees, one of them was unavailable. The soup was rather good, large amount, maybe too much, hot, fresh and flavorful. The steaks came out and they were definitely fine dining portions, piece of steak, and ration of bland potatoes, onion rings? I ask for my steak cooked medium it came out medium rare, closer to rare, no steak knives, good Pittsburg sear though. All of the food was tasty, the sauces were very nice, a great compliment for a so-so plate of steak and potatoes. I?m guessing that?s what makes it French, the use of flavorful sauces that have a lot of butter in them. Just in the same way that the Asian influence meant using Wasabi in creative ways. \r \r After dinner the waitress asked if we would like dessert, we said sure, and she just stood there. She said ""Oh yeah, we don?t have dessert menus, its in my head"". It was three items, Creme Brule, Chocolate Mousse and Ice Cream. I got the Creme Brule and my wife got the mousse. The Mousse tasted like chocolate flavored Cool whip, and the Creme Brule was tasty but the attempt and caramelized sugar on top was a mess, and thin.\r \r For a pub with some good steaks that are sometimes cooked how you want them, not bad. But for a ""French Asian Fusion Restaurant"", with $25.00 Entrees it failed miserably. Pros: Large selection of Mojitos, wait I thought those were Cuban? Cons: Expensive, so-so food and selection. No visible Sushi preparation. more

Worst food ever! 1/27/2009

Went mid-afternoon for lunch, and needless to say it was all around HORRIBLE! The miso soup we ordered had more greens in it than a salad, the tofu was still frozen and the soup itself was so cold I didn?t even eat it. You would think since we were sitting at the bar with no one else around, the bartender would have noticed that I pushed my soup away and didn?t eat it, NOPE. Then came the sushi, I don?t even know how to explain how retched it was. I truly think it was not sushi grade at all. We ate maybe 3 pieces total of the 5 different types of sushi and rolls we ordered, and again the bartender didn?t even blink when we didn?t eat it. Not to mention we had to ask for napkins, chopsticks, etc.; she was too busy talking to her coworkers instead of waiting on us. We weren?t in the mood to argue, so we just paid and left, but ill never ever go back there again! Please save yourself, don?t eat here! Pros: location Cons: EVERYTHING more

No thanks 11/17/2008

My wife and I have given this restaurant 3 tries. We always give people the benefit of the doubt...everyone has a bad day or you order something and it isn't quite right. But in 3 attempts at this place we were not only unimpressed, but downright disappointed. One one visit I had a pasta dish with a clam sauce...the sauce was a wine and butter sauce and the ""clam"" was clearly a canned concoction that was ice cold. The sushi has always been less than stellar...especially compared to other places in the area. The only saving grace for this establishment is the martini list...but with Bleu Martini literally around the corner, its good for a single drink at best. The one star rating is for the ease of finding a table...I imagine because people who live in the area know better. Pros: Easy to find a table Cons: Everything else more

Pretty decent food, friendly service. 7/18/2008

My boyfriend and I attended this restaurant on a Friday night. We had 8 PM reservations and when we went in there were 4 other people dining. I guess we were sort of past the major dinner rush. The ambiance was nice but a little dark. The waitress was great- very prompt and friendly. I guess that isn't that difficult when we were her only table. Anyway- the food came out quickly and it was pretty fresh tasting. The tempura we got as an appetizer was crispy and hot, not at all seeming like it had been sitting around like other reviewers commented. I got the New York strip steak which was pretty good. I did order it medium and it came more medium well but thats OK You'd be hard pressed to find a restaurant outside of a steak house that doesn't overcook steaks. My boyfriend got the Bul Go Ki and said that he enjoyed it. We used a $25 ""gift certificate"" from restaurants dot com that we purchased for only $3 or $4 on sale so the meal which typically would have been a little overpriced was very reasonable. We didn't get any drinks but the specialty drink menu looked pretty extensive so it might be a fun place for just a drink and dessert. \r \r I'm not sure we would go back because this place didn't stand out incredibly in my mind but it certainly didn't really leave us wanting for much. The main reason we wouldn't go back is that there are so many places to choose from in Philadelphia. Pros: Good service, tasty tempura Cons: Just a handful of entree choices, low lights, slightly overpriced more

lousy 2/25/2008

anjou is the worst restaurant in the city 2/25/2008

the sushi is horribly old. there are r o a c h e s and m i c e on everything. the sushi bar printer broke because it was filled with r o a c h es. the computer guy came to fix it. but when he opened it to find it full of r o a c h e s, he left saying he wouldnt touch it.\r none of the korean food is authentic or any good.\r the staff gets no training.\r behind the bar we were made to fill up our empty bottles of Goose with Bankers club.\r \r even if the fish was fresh. the sushi chefs are amateur at best.\r \r nobody is ever in the place but you will still get the worst dining experience of your life. with little to no attention.\r \r any and all of these reviews on here that praise this restaurant are fake.\r \r HORRIBLE! FILTHY!! Pros: how to know bad dining Cons: food, service, cleanliness, price more

Are you kidding??? 5/20/2007

Our group of five arrived on time and were seated promptly. That's the last time the ""on time"" could be applied. It went downhill from there. Out waitress was courteous, but completely inept - from spilling a glass of water to asking ""how was the steamed edamame ?"" (I mean, how bad could they be?). I ordered a caesar salad with ""japanese croutons"" which consisted of one triangular crispy thing standing in the middle of the salad. That was the crouton, I guess. Okay, next came the entrees - well, 3 of them, anyway. I guess 3 out of 5 isn't bad. We were then informed that the other two would be out in about 10 more minutes. And I noticed that the tempura that one of our party ordered, had been sitting on the kitchen ledge for at least 10 minutes before anything else came out. I had ordered a pan-seared salmon with sweet peas and red pepper sauce over cous-cous, but that was not what I had in front of me. It looked oddly similar to the chicken teriyaki that someone else in my party had ordered. After figuring out what had gone wrong, the waitress told me that the correct order had been placed, but that the kitchen got it wrong. So, my meal came out AFTER everyone else's. We did get complimentary desserts, though - some ice-cream dumplings known as mochi (which can be bought at Trader Joe's for a couple of bucks) with a fermented (or just plain spoiled) cherry on the dish. The people next to us had some sort of chocolate mousse which was runny and bad-tasting, according to them, so we lucked out there. Oh yes, one more thing: as we were leaving, we found out that that there were several specials that we were never told about.\r \r The others in my party thought the food was good - I'd say it was decent, but the lack of management involvement and extremely poor service was enough for me to say there are plenty of other great places to go in the city without having to deal with really, really bad service. Cons: Service, management more

The worst service 4/22/2007

A restaurant can be open or it can be closed. If it's open, the staff should act like it and be properly attentive to paying guests. Seven of us took up a table around 8pm tonight. We placed our food orders around 8:20 and waited. At 8:45 we got soup spoons. At 8:50 we flagged down a waitress to find our waiter and find out where our food was. At 9 I had to go inside, interrupt the hostess on a personal phone call and ask where our starters and soup were. It turns out they were sitting on the counter (for who knows how long). \r \r At 9:05, with our soup finally at the table, and after an excuse from the waiter about the sushi chef doing things in the wrong order, we were visited by someone claiming to be the manager. This is the point where you usually expect an apology and some kind of a gesture to make us satisfied again. What we got were accusations that our soup had been brought out at 8:45! He actually argued with me about what time our food was brought out and tried to convince me that it had arrived 15 minutes after it was ordered. After seeing that I was not backing down, he did give us a round of drinks on the house, but he also gave us a different excuse than our waiter had given for the delays.\r \r Most of our food was brought out around 9:20. We canceled the rest when it had not arrived ten minutes later. We barely saw our waiter after the initial orders.\r \r I guess some of this might have made sense if the restaurant was packed, but the only other guests were two tables of 2. All I can think is that the night was a little slow and the staff just gave up. :-/ Pros: Good food Cons: Very poor service more

I was impressed 4/6/2007

Well last night was my second time eating at this place. The food was very good, the service was good too, the drinks were a little overpriced, but it was worth it because they were delicious. My girlfriend is a very picky eater, and i was surprised how good our server was prepared to explain the dishes. When we were done all my girlfriend could talk about was how good the steak was, and how sexyy the accent of our server was. (not something i wanted to hear :) ). I definitely will go back again. \r \r P.S. GORGEOUS bartenders :). Pros: Everything was just right. more

Loved It! 3/8/2007

I love to eat out and try new food, so when i came accros Anjou i was very sceptical about it! A fiew minuts later i was greated by the nicest hostes i have ever meet, she explained the menu, and eventhough i had no idea what some of the words ment the hostes was nice and patient enough to explain what they ment! The tables were a bit to close to eachother, but once our waiter and drinks arrived we had forgotten that there were other people aeound us, Anjou was simply a great place! After diner, i walked to the bar downstairs and watched the Eagles Game on the Big Screan TV that was in the Lounge place, One of the cooles things ever. Over all the food was great, the server was nice, friendly, and the prices were mached with those that u would find in an Dinner, considering that we were eating in Old City, the Prices were GREATE. Pros: --- Cons: ---- more

It has the best food and the best meneger ever........ And it has one of the best sevices ever.....It is the hottest and the most romantic restaurant the the world. 2/27/2007

I love their soups and espeially their deserts which where one of the best deserts ever tested in my life and let me tell you about the chicken turiaky it is just awsome. GO TO ANJOU AND YOU WILL LOVE IT. Anjou has also a night club which starts at eleven and i just loved it. So if yount to party abjou is the place to do it. more

nasty 1/26/2007

Everything about Anjou is nasty, from the service to the food. The sushi had that not-so-fresh fishy taste and the entrees need some work. We ordered an appetizer and it came out at the same time as the meal. The entree needed to be reheated, as it was waiting for someone to bring it over for quite some time. The service was just very off and they couldn't answer simple questions about the menu items (I think our waitress even made up what was in one of the sushi rolls). The drinks were too sweet and all tasted like sour mix. For such a crappy meal, it was way overpriced. I'll be sure to never return... Cons: Food, Ambiance, Service - all pretty bad more

bul go ki cheese steak is the best I have ever had 10/21/2006

Lunch at anjou is awesome. They created a fusion cheese steak that is out of this world. Everyone in philly needs to try one. The sushi is always good too, they have tons of different makis. The dinner croud is a good and fun one. I live in the area and dine there often. The weekends are good if you want a fun atmosphere (they have a live DJ). The weeknights are more easy going if you are into a more romantic evening. The menu is extensive so it can suit anyones taste. I eat there once a week at least and seem to always come up with something new to try. I also really enjoy there traditional Korean dishes. I will continue to dine there on a regular basis. more

Best Sushi in Philly 9/3/2006

I don't know where this people went to eat, but from my experience, Anjou is one of the best restaurants in Old City. I try to dine there every weekend with my wife and two kids. We have a BLAST every time we go there. The staff at Anjou is friendly and ready to help. The food is marvelous. The Sushi is fresh and very well decorated. My favorite dish from the sushi bar is the ""Sushi Deluxe and the Eel and Avocado Maki"". Actually it's the only place I been that the eel didn't taste like rubber. And the kitchen has a great variety of food to choose. And its not really expensive. People come on. Old City Restaurants don't have McDonalds prices. Pros: The Food, The Service, Everything Cons: --------- more

Totally Dissatisfied 4/16/2006

The sushi was disgusting. We had to send back two rolls. I only ate a california roll because I was starving. Salad was wilty and brown. Chilean sea bass so/so. The menu seems inticing, but it sounds a lot better than it actually is. There were hardly any other people eating, and one of the diners proceeded to smoke cigarrettes right next to us. Seventy bucks later, we went somewhere else to eat. Manager was rude and unapologetic, said he just wanted us out of there. Definitely, DO NOT EAT IN THIS RESTAURANT!!! Pros: Waiter was nice, decent mohito Cons: bad food, overpriced, poor management more
