Angelika Film Ctr & Cafe

One star is generous. Uncomfortable, terribly distracting sound every 15 minutes or so from the subway underneath. Last I was there was for a weekday matinee so luckily the theater was almost empty, no problem with seat. Just a few people behind me and a GIANT RAT next to me. Seriously. I know, I know, it's manhattan, there are rats but you shouldn't have to share your popcorn with one at the movies. It was dark so I couldn't see it but it must have had someone's old candy box or something because you could hear it gnawing on the cardboard. It's rough little tongue scraping whatever was once in there out. I turned around when I first heard it thinking it was someone in the seat behind me but, it wasn't. I then realized what it was and so did a woman who was sitting two rows behind me as I saw her eyes grow wide and a look of disgust come over her. Thinking the critter was in my aisle, between me and the exit, I didn't want to get up to leave because this thing sounded HUGE and I didn't want to risk stepping on it in the darkness. After the movie ended, which luckily was shortly after the RAT joined us, I checked under the seats next to me but he must have run off as soon as the lights came up because he was no where to be found. The woman who had been sitting behind me came up to me and said ""that was disgusting!"" and we told the attendant as we were leaving that there was a HUGE RAT in the theater but he just shrugged and went on being a waste of space. Now this was quite a while ago but judging by other reviews and by friends accounts nothing much has changed. It's a shame that so many establishments who treat their clientele so poorly manage to stay in business when there are tons of other smaller places who truly appreciate their customers going out of business every day. more

Made the trek from Westchester to the Angelika for many years. The location is great for dinner and a movie. However, yesterday's experience turned me off for good. Long story short - the theater's personnel don't know what the hell they're doing. Despite having on-line tickets and being told ""there will be no line,"" we ended up standing outside in the rain only to be told there were no more seats available. There were a number of others who experienced the same ridiculous situation. Lots of F-bombs shouted. At least we were able to get our money back. So goodbye, Angelika! And good riddance to your uncomfortable seats! more

Once in a while my wife and I go here because of their film selection. We have found that the best way to go here without complete aggrevation is to buy tix on fandango and pick them up in the lobby. Of course today we didn't do that and we waited on the line and when we finally, after 10 minutes, reached the window the moron ticket clerk unapologetically informed us that our movie is sold out. Couldn't she have made an announcement so we didn't waste our time? Or how about the morons counting money next to her put a sign up that says sold out!?! If you go here you will see there is no manager because the place isn't friendly or competent. Manager's response was that she couldn't do anything. After begging for help to cover myself, she finally agreed to my plea for a stapler. Good place to see films, but lately seems to be lacking something. Nowadays, I tend to head over to the Sunshine Cinema to take in some of the good oldies they bring back on special fridays. more

this is an indie theatre, its not a loews multiplex or the IMAX at lincolin centre. yes, the theatres are smaller than what we normally expect in our larger than life consumer driven buffet feeding american lifestyle. yes occasionally you can hear the subway rumbling but it gives it that gritty industrial feel and doesnt take away from the sound quality of the movie. the only cons are the cafe is insanely expensive, prepare to dish out four bucks for a fiji water and over three dollars for a tiny diet coke in the old glass bottle. also the tickets cost as much as any regular city theatre at 10.75 but i rather spend it on a good movie than some hollywood blockbuster that you can get on netflix anyway. i have a great time at the angelika, so give it a shot before reading reviews and having them cloud your judgement. also, i have to say i dont know why people were complaining about the bathrooms being gross. have you never had to use the bathroom at lower east side bar? it was def better than the bathrooms at max fish or piano's. and you dont judge a theatre by the bowl anyway. go see a movie at the angelika, see half nelson. see who killd the electric car? see the illusionist. and judge for yourself. I went out see a film hear recently and bought tix at the kiosk inside. I was charged twice for 2 tickets and after calling four different numbers and being on the phone an hour I still haven't gotten my money back. This only adds insult to injury since this is the worst theater in the city. more

Many of its theaters are way too small. Why paying the full price for so much discomfort?? If you want your movie experience to be comfortable, I cannot recommend the Angelika. Pros: great movie selection, nice crowd Cons: too small, concession stand more

Everything here is decent: various coffee drinks, pastries, teas, cold drinks, ok pre-packed sandwiches, etc. This is a fine cafe. What makes this place great is the space itself and its central location. I've been meeting people here for many years. The space is large and comfortable, there're almost always places to sit. There's even enough room to spread out and have an impromptu business meeting. Also, one of the most accessible public bathrooms downtown is here at Angelika. PS - My favorite movie theatre, Angelika Film Center, is attached to the cafe. Pros: location, space, good coffee more
