Best

The Angelika is what all independent movie theaters should aspire to be. It has multiple screens showing the best in non-Blockbuster film-making. The theater shows award-winning f...

Worst

Many of its theaters are way too small. Why paying the full price for so much discomfort?? If you want your movie experience to be comfortable, I cannot recommend the Angelika. ...

Meet me at Angelika! 3/23/2003

Everything here is decent: various coffee drinks, pastries, teas, cold drinks, ok pre-packed sandwiches, etc. This is a fine cafe. What makes this place great is the space itself and its central location. I've been meeting people here for many years. The space is large and comfortable, there're almost always places to sit. There's even enough room to spread out and have an impromptu business meeting. Also, one of the most accessible public bathrooms downtown is here at Angelika. PS - My favorite movie theatre, Angelika Film Center, is attached to the cafe. Pros: location, space, good coffee more

Never Again 2/23/2003

Was this really built in 1989? Didn't they hear about stadium seating? Did they ever try to watch a movie in this theatre? Awful. Who cares about the cafe, THIS IS A MOVIE THEATER! Go get your overpriced coffee somewhere else. The sound was the worst I ever heard. Bad quality.(the subway sound is constantly part of the dialogs.) The seating? Oh,please... Lucky me who didn't have anyone in front of me. People put their coats on the seats to avoid other patrons sitting next to them (specially in the front of them). If they at least charged less... but they have the courage to charge the same as any other decent theater. Pros: movie selection Cons: bad seating, bad sound, subway noise more

I love the Anjelika! 11/11/2002

I love this place. It does get extremly crowded from time to time. But this was the first place i saw an independent film and i will certainly continue coming here. more

What a DUMP! 8/24/2002

What is wrong with the management of the Angelika? Are they completely oblivious to what is happening around them? The place is going to implode. I bought tickets online to guarantee myself seats - unfortunately the machines where you get your tickets were out of order so I had to wait in a very long line to get them at the ticket-counter. The bathrooms are disgusting - and the doors don't lock. By far my greatest complaint is about the seating - I consider myself tall at 6'2 but I was still unable to see the bottom half of the screen when someone sat in front of me. From now on I'm going to see my films across town - the Angelika has ripped me off for the last time. Pros: movie selection Cons: rude employees, poor seating, dirty batrooms more

In serious decline 5/14/2002

Still shows films that fit the foreign/art/indie category, but more and more mainstream fare has been added over the past few years. The Sunshine theater down the block has now usurped the Angelika's position as Manhattan's premiere art house. There is very little reason to deal with the ridiculous lines, rude employees shouting into the P.A. system, postage stamp-sized screens, and general air of decline. This used to be a once or twice a week destination, but now I'd only see a movie here if it wasn't playing anywhere else in the city. more
